The Truth Why Climbers Keep Dying on Everest
Summiting Everest was once the holy grail of mountaineering. And to many it still is, as more people are making the attempt than ever. Not everyone who tries the climb makes it home, but why? Here's why Everest is claiming so many lives.
Mount Everest is more than 29,000 feet tall, which might make you think most victims of the mountain die by falling. But that's only the second most common cause of death. According to the BBC, most people who die on Everest are killed in avalanches. The third most common cause of death on the mountain is exposure or frostbite, which accounts for around 11% of fatalities. Other causes of death include falling ice, rope accidents, pneumonia, or even drowning due to pulmonary edema.
Surprisingly, more people die on the way down from the summit than on the way up, and route preparation is dangerous, too. A total of 120 people have died while working on the routes, with a handful more dying at base camp, en route to base camp, or during an evacuation. So really, you're not safe anywhere on Mount Everest.

Nepal does what countries do that are basically poor. It tries to generate income. It is not Nepal's fault if loads of people with, by comparison, vast amounts of disposable income choose to risk their lives. So far 17,000 jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge and pedestrian access is free. Should they also be monitored? Blaming Nepal seems lazy to me. It's called death zone for a reason.

If, however, you have ever hiked you realize that it is substantially easier to lose your footing on the way down. This is true of stairs as well.

@@tinatantrum5564 They are building a net on the Golden Gate Bridge. There is also constant surveillance, and volunteers are looking for possible jumpers. They also closed the pedestrian zone at night a long time ago. So, yes, there is a lot of effort to prevent more suicides. Nepal just doesn't give a sheit about people. And since the majority of deaths involves Sherpa's, it's clear they don't care about their own people.
because 95% of them have no business even being there
I'm never surprised that more people die on the way down. A lot ppl push for the summit late in the day and turn around and start their way down at night when they are completely exhausted and more prone to make mistakes.

Same. Unforgotten that one time when I spent over an hour to climb some really unforgiving mountain terrain in Skyrim just because I was obsessed with getting to the top (or too lazy to walk around). Spoiler alert: I did not make it and the amount of times I died was comical.
I thought the majority of folks die on Everest from 2 things - higher up the mountain increased risk of altitude sickness (people have also died from altitude sickness at basecamp though) and more recently on the South Face of Everest climbing the Khumbu Icefall Glacier. There are avalanches and ice break offs every day now especially when the sun is out.
The 2pm rule is broken too often & large crowds near the Hillary Step slowing things down. Lack of oxygen on the way back down and avalanches

Because they won't turn around when they should.
After Messner and Habeler showed in 1978 that it could be done without oxygen (and Messner proving two years later that it can be done solo in alpine style without oxygen) there is no need to use oxygen. I wish they would ban oxygen on Mount Everest. And David, you should dismiss the criticism unless its made by someone who has done better work themselves (= 0).

These amatures shouldn't be on Everest. They're a danger to those who do have the experience to climb.

True, people should have enough common sense not to risk their lives for the vain glory of being able to say that they climbed Mount Everest.
I get so tired of people saying that Mount Everest is 29,000 feet tall, it is 29,000 feet high but when you measure it from base camp to Peak it’s only about 12,000 feet tall, which is shorter than Mount Denali in North America, which is about 17,000 feet tall
@jorgenavarro5232

Indeed is 29,000 but of course if you measure it from base camp is 12,000 feet tall. Same as Denali, is 17,000 but if you measure it from Base Camp which is at 7200 feet, you got a 9,200 feet tall.

@@wolfhorsky of course it is and that’s why it is more difficult to climb the Mount Denali however, it’s not 29,000 feet tall which is what my point was. I didn’t say anything about the altitude because that does make a difference. It’s just not 29,000 feet tall cause that’s a goddamn tall mountain.
Based on the information provided in the above video about why climbers are dying on Mount Everest I think they should permanently close down that mountain to climbing in order to prevent more people from dying.
