THE TRUTH: Square Strike Wedge Review
In this video Rick Shiels PGA golf professional heads out to The Worsley Marriott Hotel & Country Club to put the Square Strike wedge to the test to see if it can really improve your golf!
You may have seen the commercial that states the Square Strike wedge will improve your short game and help you to play better golf. Is this this case or would it be a waste of your money? Will you stop hitting shots fat, stop duffing and stop shanking your approach shots?
You may have a Titleist Vokey wedge, Cleveland Golf wedge, TaylorMade Golf wedge, Callaway Golf wedge, Mizuno Golf wedge or a Ping Golf Wedge.
Will the Square Strike wedge help you to play like Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka or Dustin Johnson?

Am I wrong or that is 15 clubs? Only allowed 14 in a bag.
Use mine every round. The more I use it, the better I get with it. Also, if you flip your wrist at the bottom, you can actually send it fifty to sevenity five yards to the center. I use instead of my 56 degree wedge anytime there is no hazards in front of the green. Easier to control and never have to worry about the the toe or heel. I love it!!
Used to caddy for an 18+ handicapper that used something similar, he always played in less than 4 hours and tipped $100 per bag. Nothing wrong with helping less skilled/older crowd enjoy the game. Rick's review of this club was fair and overall positive so why all the ego driven negativity by the " I wouldn't bag this if you paid me" brigade. It's just a super forgiving PW and may well help the average golfer. Maybe we should all go back to using traditional lofted blades and ridicule people when they turn up with their game improvement irons!

Rick this club is amazing! IT has taken a few strokes off my game. This is my 3rd year of golf my short game was the last thing I have been trying to learn. For the last couple years I have learned to hit Irons and wedges at full power anyway, I used to be the guy that flew the green then flew it back the other way with my wedges. I picked this club up and now I dominate my buddies around the green. They fear the green machine and I use it every hole it seems. I def feel out of all the clubs I have purchased I use this one the absolute most and LOVE IT! I freaking love this club and so do my buddies I golf with when I let em use it.
Hello Rick! Thanks for all the amazing insights on golf clubs. However, I have two requests. One: there is a putter that stands up on its own to help with alignment. It’s called the s7k stand alone putter. Two: I would love it if you started to review some slightly cheaper clubs that are more for recreational golfers, such as the Callaway X Series clubs. Thank you!
Never would have thought it would be that effective for a golfer with extreme chipping struggles
G’day Rick, I’m a 51 year old Chopper from Australia who has taken up golf again after a 20 years. I’m on way down as far as golf goes now and I play for pure enjoyment, I play with my step son Jack who is 23 and just starting out and showing good signs of being a very good average golfer. I purchased this square face wedge and I immediately dropped at least a half dozen shots a round. I don’t hit many greens in regulation and it has just added more enjoyment to my game. For people like me this is great club. Love your channel, all the best, John

Rick, I REALLY REALLY HOPE you read and respond to this comment. I'm in the US and you are right--the ads for this are EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME. Here's why this works for a lot of people: the ads say to use a back-and-through putting type stroke (by implication, pendulum swing with no wrist action). Well, ANYONE becomes a more consistent bump-and-run chipper with ANY club and lots of green if you can do that. That was partly validated by the amateurs you featured in the video--their swings were anything BUT straight-back-straight-through, pendulum, no-wrist swings, and their results were horrible. There was ONE swing that finally looked like that, and it was a decent result.
Sir Rick, thank you for caring. It really shows in your videos, and I think that is one of reason you have become so successful. Best of times to you.
Hey Rick my greatest thanks are owed to your channel. I’m 48 have had 9 back surgeries so I quit golf for the last 8 years, to be fair I was never great best 18 was a 84. But from watching your channel and just playing around with my clubs has got me out again. First round shot a 125 🤦♂️ it was cold beginning of March here in Michigan in the U.S. BUT IN JUST 3 weeks about $200 spent in new gear I’m now in the 90s shot a 91 on Saturday. I’m having so much fun just being outside on the course, so thanks for all your tips. Ps I used 1 ball last time out NOT A PRO V1 lol maybe I’ll find one in the woods one day and shoot a 84 again. Cheers Mate 💁🏼♂️
This is great Rick! Need more of these “ to good to be true” clubs and how they really perform!

Loving the reviews you film. Also huge thanks to your, tutorial videos. They have helped me tremendously. So many thanks to you sir!!
My father in law just bought this in the past month. He’s a very high handicap, senior golfer. I tried it out with a putting swing and it certainly worked fine from the first cut and anywhere it wasn’t buried. I struggled a bit with the deeper shots, as did he. I think it’s a good club for players like him, and he’s getting used to the stroke. Great video!
I need a short a game, alright! Keep it up Dude!
How about reviewing the C3i, the other wedge they keep shoving down out throats on Golf Channel in the US?
I've been looking forward to someone doing an independent, honest review of these clubs. Thanks Rick. It isn't for me but I have a mate who is really struggling around the greens and reverts to a 6i bump-and-run no matter the situation because he is hitting every wedge fat or thin. This may be his short-term savior.
Great review, I’ve seen the ads and actually really dislike when someone makes a club that promises results that can be obtained from regular clubs and extra practice. Very thorough job in this review, well done.
I'd like to see Rick review the 60* model - and try it over a bunker with a tight pin. His basic complaint was the loft - but there are three lofted models.
Thanks for the great reviews. I always wondered about these clubs, but after watching this video, I feel confident that the "Square Strike" is not much more than a more forgiving 9-iron. Keep up the good work Rick!
Never seen the advert for this, but off to watch it now. PS im awful at chipping. Might look this club up. 🤣
@TheSteve1126

Honestly I think it’s a good thing. No single digit handicap is going to use it. But for people, especially older people, it could be a really good think. No one will ever hit a full shot with it. I think it’s important to remember that single digit handicappers, while many of the people that consume Rick’s content, are a vast minority of players in the world. It’s a club for 20+’s around the green, and it can be effective in that.
@JmackDaddyFunk

@@TheSteve1126 I keep and use a chipper in my bag and constantly get ribbing from whoever I play a round with. While I’m knocking it to within 7 feet of the cup nine times out of ten they are thinning their shots and 2 putting. At best. Yeah. Keep on using your wedge when you can’t master it. I’ll be one putting my hole more times than not.
I have one of these and I use it all the time. I was sceptical when I first got it. I decided to try it as I have a habit of blading my shot across the green with my sand or lob wedge. This takes care of that problem. It works great in almost all situations upto about 40 yards out. Only situation it doesn't work when you have to lob it over a bunker and have very little green to work with. If you don't have the time to practise and become an expert chipper get one of these.
Holy crap, the review I've been waiting for! GX-7 next!
YES! Thank you Rick! I requested this. Could you please do the GX7 metal driver? We need to know the truth about that club as well.
I dread having to chip around the greens, I have the yips and always chunk it, feel myself getting very snappy and quick when hitting through the ball so would be very interested in a lower degree in this as the shot I hate the most in golf is chipping over a bunker into the green, always wanted to see someone review this and not by someone trying to get you to buy it and telling you everything you want to hear. Great work Rick, keep doing these type of reviews. 👌
The pendulum motion works well with any club when soft shots are needed.
The intro clip had me dying lol, just like the ad
thanks for the honest review. I play the 45 and 55 degree squarestrike and I love them. I was terrible with my wedges from 50 yards and in, but with these two clubs I may not be tap-in but I have a chance. Like you said, if you have a good short game these aren't for you because you don't need them. The shot you demo'd over the bunker with the 45 was difficult, but if you do that same shot with the 55 or 60 it will flop and stick!
Rick I like your KZread channel you explain things and make it easy
This reminds me of the Two way chipper in my grandfathers bag. Can’t remember the loft on that though

I really want one of these clubs for my bag. Maybe it's just me, but I love the look of it, personally. Thanks for the review!
Just bought this club, a couple of weeks ago. And I agree with you. It's not for everyone. Great review.
I have something similar. It was a 7 iron head on a putter. It worked really well and taught me how to chip. Now I just use my 7 iron and choke up and it does the same thing. It is a good club for beginners and teaches the fundamentals of chipping if you are close to the green.
I really always have been curious about this wedge. Thank you for testing it Rick! I absolutely feel that your reviews have made a massive impact on people choosing golf clubs in general. Thank you for always reviewing the latest equipment and for the honest reviews.👌🏻 P.S Have you ever considered testing edel wedges?
I’m a 21hcp and really struggle with chipping around the greens. I recently purchased a Cleveland Smart Sole chipper and it’s been a game changer for me. It’s shaved 5-6 strokes off my game. My anxiety level when I get in close has gone way down and my enjoyment of the game has gone way up.

@@stebypeters8188 If you are a high handicapper, you might be able to save that many strokes. I have a 16.8 handicap and for a whole year have averaged 31 putts per round. I been waiting for you to do a video on this or the csi3 wedge or the gx7 that’s all over the golf channel
I used a chipper back when I was golfing alot and all I can say is that they are extremely easy and consistent. Not for pros though as you said because you have the skill to use other clubs with better reliability and control. I don't remember what degree mine was but I could be extremely accurate with it from anything from the outside of the green to about 90 meters. It wasen't really anything I really needed but I just liked using it, I was decent 17 HCP player and played for about 17 years. I could use other clubs for those shots but the chipper was just the most reliable. But as you said it also needs alot of green since backspin isn't gonna happen with that thing. But it's solid option for many, especially if you have trouble with you close-game.
Perfect timing for the video. I was thinking about getting one tonight lol
Great work again rick! Always love your content!
You should've used a pitching wedge from the same spots as a comparison, since you're playing a bump & run

Hello Rick. I have a channel for video games but I also play golf in my free time maybe once or twice a month, sometimes more. All I have to say is I saw your tips on how to get rid of your slice... All I can say is it has really worked for me. I saw a dramatic change in the angle the ball was going. You've got alot of good tips I would recommend you for tips to anyone. Thanks
A really fair review of the club.No frills but does the job required however will not make a world class chipper of a golf ball.
Hey Rick you should do a review on the c3i wedge they claim to be great out of the bunker while just gliding through the sand
Sounds like they developed the 55 and 60deg ones to help with those "over the bunker" shots and get the ball to stop sooner. Good review though. I use my Sand wedge a lot for chipping and pitching up, so the 55deg might be one I consider
When I’m not using a pitching wedge for lift around the green, I always use a 7iron, absolutely spot on as it works the same way this square faced chipper does, I can get under the ball with duffing it and at the same time keep it low, bump and runs shots are perfect, 7iron around the green has help me massively improve my putting game, I aim to get within club length to allow not more than a 2 putt. Simples. Great video too Rick 👍🏻
I'll tell you i bought one and i love it its easy to chip with , I bought the 60 degree , thanks .
Can you use the GX7 metal driver next? I really wonder how good it is lol
This is must needed for high handicappers
Finally, someone I trust giving this club a review. As someone who uses a 8 iron bump and run but not from as far out as you were ( typically a few feet off the fringe ) it interests me if I could use that as a bump and run from a bit further out. From that position you were at I’m typically using a 60, but seeing you chip some balls up there with ease within 5 feet of the hole is very interesting. I also haven’t broken 100 yet ( playing less than a year ) so possibly it wouldn’t work as well for me as it did you. Love the content Rick, thanks for always being honest and overall a good mate. Keep hitting them well!

Interesting vid Rick! Chipping is my favorite approach to the green. I use my sand wedge, 9 or 7 iron depending on lie and distance and have very good experience with that. Having such chipper in the bag would mean to sacrifice one club for it as it's good for nothing else it seems. My own challenge is in pitching so I try to avoid pitching lies around the green.

My dad thinks he knows everything about equipment, so he bought the 65* C3i. He sends that thing straight up in the air because he tries to help it a lot on every shot. I keep telling him he needs to de loft it, but he just keeps trying to flop it. 1) It's got a big ass sole so flopping it either blades it or you get lucky and it goes up with an 85* launch angle. 2) Why the hell do you need to flop a 65* club?

I tried the c3i and kept it for the duration of the trial and then returned it. (The return was as easy as the commercial described) It seemed to me that it required just as much, but different, technique to learn that any bunker play requires. I'm very happy with my MD3 Callaway sand wedge
I enjoyed your review, Rick. And I thought you presented a balanced look at the Square Strike wedge. In all honesty, I have been using the Square Strike for a year and I love it. I have tested it in a variety of ways and have found that you can get elevated shots on the green as well as hit it out of a bunker. In addition, with some practice, you can hit it out of deep rough as well. All things considered, for me it was money well spent.
Great review, Rick. You do an amazing job with these videos. Nice move to pull some amateurs and see what they do with the club. Haha every last one was trying to wrist flip it into the air. The only benefit of this club is the loft on the face is the same as a 3/4 ball thin strike. This is why I hit a 9i if I'm truly uncomfortable with the shot. A thin hit comes out the same as a clean one but less hot.

Right? It's a little shocking to see the club actually work as advertised.

You really can’t chunk it with the Square Strike wedge.
Great review! I was very curious about that sheisty looking infomercial....but a tad intrigued lol!
I have the Cleveland version of this, the Smart Sole 2. I love it. 50-70 yards and in its money. Easy to hit, easy to control distance.
