I think it is hard to live in California and not know about the Franciscan monks and their missions. They practically founded all the cities and early urban settlements, from San Diego up to the North. They brought the first cattle, they brought most agricultural crops, they built the first schools, hospitals and churches. And of course they named the most important settlement in California back than after their patron saint: San Franciso de Asís. Another thing that is completely burried in Californian history is of Johann August Sutter. After the Franciscan friars he is the founder of modern California. He came from Switzerland to Mexico. Back than the Mexican government realized they had to accelerate the setteling of California, otherwise the expanding English speaking American colonies would take it away from them. So they welcomed new European arrivals like Sutter. He founded the first little factories, timber mills, built roads, etc. - basically the first steps of the industrial revolution. He founded the town of Sacramento and did a lot to bring prosperity to the mixed Native-Spanish population. Everything went very well until somebody found gold in a river near Sacramento and thousands of thousands adventurers, miners, gold diggers, criminals, prostitutes, etc. came from the Eastern USA and destroyed Sutter's life work. They basically stole everything from him. In today's textbooks they call him Swiss-American colonist or business man, but he was a Swiss-Mexican enterpreneur. He had Mexican citizenship and bought the land for his colonies from the Mexican government.

October 12 as DIA DE HISPANIDAD was the result of commemorating Columbus and his voyages and discoveries. The Italians did not appropriate Oct. 12 as COLUMBUS DAY. COLUMBUS DAY when made an annual national holiday-in the US and in Latin America-was intended to be a day celebrating Italian, Spanish/Latino, and Indigenous culture and contributions. It was MEANT TO BE a day of unity-not a divisive day as ignorant social-justice warriors made it.

The thing is Protestant Colonialism because of Calvinist Theology that they had a depredating colonialism, while the Catholic Spanish were a self generating empire. In that time the English was just a an Island who had some commerce based economy with land limited livestock. They robbed the Dutch from the technology for textiles. Now when they colonized the first states in the Americas, Calvinism in their spirits depredating the resources whas just natural for them, its no mystery they where ok morally to support the economy with the Americas based in slave trade and work. Mexico city in the 17th century was a much more developed city than London or Vienna, and this is information provided by an opposition Protestant called Alexander Von Humboldt. Protestants adopted the free trade for the Colonized world but had trade barriers for themselves, and also they situated their cities in ports, while the self sufficient Spanish placed cities in places for inland and in the mountains. They also started around 30 Universities in the West Indies (The name for the place then), and they send the best of their intellectual men from their gold century, with Cervantes even being one of those who closely went to go along with the project; I mean they didn't send Pirates and the peoples in jails; they where the best of the best men being sent to mix with the indian communities there.Since England couldn't fight the empire off; they just created the Black legend which with time the whole north of Europe was promoting such black legend and obviously USA was doing the same as well. In the XXth century the Russian Soviets starting doing it as well with their hands in some of the politicians then, Its important to mention how the creation of bourgeois merchants class for two to three centuries around the ports of the West Indies, was hand of the British instituted FreeMasonry in the black markets communities. Liberalism then was instituted through this way into the Americas and with the Blow of the French Bourbon Kings really had to try hard to destroy a really well balanced Empire. The final blow was given by tthe English in with the French by the hand of a fake defense treaty from the Bourbon King with the English during the French Revolution. Napoleon came and kidnapped the King and destroyed all the industry in Spain. All the boat yards where destroyed by the French or by the British in the and the famous battle of Trafalgar between Napoleon and the English. After Trafalgar the table was set for Masons cropped for two centuries in Hispanic Americas started to what the Anglo British do best: to Balkanize . They shot themselves on their both legs by destroying the Empire who Fed them by Independence wars ( really they were Civil wars because very few original Spanish Soldiers where in the whole territory to defend it in a time where there was a vacuum of power in in the Spanish throne).. We received from the Liberal (British and French)Marxist led prepared Clergy for the Catholic church in the XXth century for the West Indies. That was the last blow to try and divide our core of spirit led by the original Catholic Spanish Faith.

They couldn't apply white supremacism because in those times, literally, there wasnt a concept of "white race". The idea of the colour of your skin driven your identity was an english invention in the XVII century in one of the colones in nowdays US ( Sorry but I can't remember the author but is not hard to google). In those times with the slaves being transproted to NA they had to create a narrative about why they were in charge and why the slaves were slaves and that is where the idea of race superiority came from. Before that there were two ways to distinguish people: Are they from your country? If they're not from your country do they have the same religion? That was it. Skin colour didn't matter a thing for their society ( Obviously if you have a society with a predominant skin colour and suddenly someone popped with a radically diferent skin colour would be seen as exotic, etc but wouldn't be discriminated. In the case of Spain even the religion was not that important as time progressed.

The Indians were never tried by the inquisition for the following reason: In the Hispanic Catholic world, someone who has been exposed to the truth of Christ but has reneged on it was considered persecutable. As was the case with Jews, Protestants and Muslims. The Indians did not fall into that category because they had not been evangelized, they did not know Christ. For the Catholic of the time, the purity of blood, for example, did not have a racial meaning, but rather a faith meaning. This means that in your lineage you did not mix with Protestants, Jews or Muslims... which was almost impossible at the time in the Iberian peninsula, in such a way that being an "old Christian" was a form of social status at that time. The fact is that since the Indians had no previous lineages that were in contact with other Abrahamic religions, they were automatically "pure in their blood." The fact is that this allowed them to easily access institutions that required "purity of blood"... such as military orders. And by the way in the iberian peninsula almost everybody preferred to be tried by the inquisition and not by ordinary justice ... the inquisition was much softer. The first thing a criminal did when he was arrested was to curse in the name of God to see if there was any luck and they sent him to the court of the inquisition.

I found one of the comments intriguing and would like further discussion of it. Esteban Zacarias says that Queen Isabella said indigenous people are subjects of the crown and do not mistreat my native subjects. While this is true, it is the nuance that is important to the discussion (and discussion does not mean that all Spaniards and all that Spain did was bad). The heart of the matter is that the Requerimiento was read to Native peoples and it says that if you do not accept the Church and Crown as lords and superior authorities then we will kill and enslave you and it will be your fault and "we will take your property and will do to you all the harm and evil we can." They were only subjects if they accepted this condition of servitude and culture change, and if they did not, they were enemies and therefore subject to any treatment deemed appropriate by individual players. Yet, what was considered appropriate for enemies is right out of the bible (Deuteronomy) and so seems divinely justified, and therefore the acts of individuals were integrated into a world and religious view that condones harsh treatment when the judgement is that someone or a people/nation are not following the right course and not abiding by the rules set in place by the colonizers. But if one is not a Christian then such justification may not see righteous or justified. If one is an indigenous American, then the text and implications of the Requerimiento can in no way be justified. Colonizing forces today use some of this same logic, be it economic, political or religious colonization: Its all for the good of the Natives so the end justifies the means. We are brining civilization and Christian conversion so all is justified. The propaganda role of the black legend is regrettable because without the stereotyping and the reasonable backlash against that, the acts of history can be placed in a broader context. The role of colonialism and human proclivities can be effectively placed in context by showing that they are the acts under certain conditions during a certain period of history, and they were carried out by certain players on a frontier who did not feel constrained by human decency. This occurs today and if we do not ignore it, or if we don't whitewash it, then perhaps healing can occur and also perhaps we will not repeat history, or at least maybe we can step in and modify the portions of it that we can comprehend by way of the historical lens. The what aboutism knee-jerk reflex that usually occurs in such discussions, does not address the fact that we as active participants can potentially stop similar atrocities from happing in our own time if we adequately acknowledge and understand their occurrence in the past. I think also that substituting Spanish for European in colonial discussions can help soften the sting. It is expected and reasonable that Spaniards or those with Spanish descent today would feel the sting, just as in America, we do when the Native American atrocities are discussed. I hope that when this is read, one takes into account my intent to broaden the discussion and to understand the course of history and human behavior, rather than propagating the spread of the black legend or demonizing those with Spanish heritage.

I appreciate your comment, and as you get deeper in the history, there exist a lot of nuances and diversity of outcomes by the Spanish Empire, the requerimiento was not homogeneously applied to every Native American who came into contact with the Spanish Empire. In fact many royal decrees and papal bulls declared very clearly not to impose the Catholic religion on non Christian natives and to respect their sovereignty. As you notice that was their primary source of authority. The leyes de los reinos de las indias is the atomic bomb for the black legend which I can tell you are not easily sucked into and I appreciate that. Furthermore, immediately Spanish writers ✍🏽 detailed atrocities and their disapprovals, in fact that’s how a few powerful political figures would destroy their oppositions by painting the other as cruel toward the indigenous, Knowing full well the criminal consequence this could bring by the viceroy. You heard how Gonzalo Pizarro lost his head for rebelling against the viceroy in Peru? Not even a marquess was free to treat the indigenous as he pleased.

Although I agree that the black legend is a reality, and that the Spanish were no worse than the french or Dutch or Portuguese or English in their colonies, my understanding of that time makes me feel that this guy's line of thinking is a little bit too apologetic for what happened in the Spanish colonies. I'm Irish and I could never imagine making such a case for the British acts upon our island , and the attempted and almost successful genocide of our people , language and culture.interestingly Felipe ii was also briefly, and illegitimately king of Ireland and England when he married Bloody Mary Tudor . He even had a town in the south of Ireland, Daingean, named after him Phillipstown, though thankfully the native place name has been restored.

You would never because the English, Dutch and French decimated truly the natives in the US, Canada, Australia, Haiti, New Zealand. When you account for the number, remainder of indigenous peoples in the Americas that thrived and continue to be present in throughout Hispanic America (aka Latin America which I reject as a term), the Spanish were godsend and the records show the legal status of natives as full subjects of the Crown. That would never fly under the Protestant Europeans. Certainly, I would never create an apology for the English, the Dutch, the French, or even the Portuguese. The Spanish stand out.

You could say that, yeah. But for the Caribbean only (Cuba, Hispaniola & Puerto Rico) and for the first 20-30 years only (1492-1510s). Once the Viceroyalties are established (1530s) it's another story. The point most hispanistas want to make is not to judge the whole 300 years (1492 - 1810s) for what happened in the first 20-30 years.

Not genocide, but there were some of the worst plague outbreaks. Which is not genocide, nor are abuses Genocide, in fact many dna 🧬 tests from the Caribbean reveal that the population carry indigenous genes.

@@godzillamegatron3590 Not Genocide,. Genocide-"the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group." Abuses and extinction do not constitute Genocide. Not to mention that we just mentioned how the ancestry of the people still exist in the current Caribbean population, which debunks your idea that they are all completely gone (generations mestizaje). Thanks for showing us why we need to keep disproving the lies by the Spanish Black Legend.

@@zacatecano114 for me it does. If Columbus didn't reach those island. Indigenous people will still be around. The current people on those islands don't look indigenous, don't speak the indigenous language , don't carry indigenous names, and don't practice the indigenous culture. Now compared to South America, where you still have indigenous people living and practicing their culture.
