The Truth Behind Saudi Arabia's Reform Spectacle

In the ‘Manifesto for Repression’ report, our analysis of a leaked draft of the penal code exposes Saudi authorities' promises of human rights reform as a charade. Indeed, the draft legislation would enable them to further crack down on human rights by codifying and entrenching existing problematic judicial practices such as the use of the death penalty as a primary punishment and the criminalisation of rights to freedom of expression and bodily autonomy, including defamation, questioning the integrity of the judiciary, consensual sexual relations, homosexuality and abortion.
Most - if not all - human rights defenders, women’s rights activists, independent journalists, writers and activists in the country have been arbitrarily detained for their human rights work or peaceful expression, put through prolonged unfair trials - most often by the infamous Specialized Criminal Court (SCC) - or released after serving their sentences but under conditions that include travel bans and other arbitrary restrictions to their fundamental rights, such as their ability to conduct peaceful activism.

It's not really the fault of anyone else, other than the ones who not only spread, but also enforce outdated interpretations of Islamic scriptures that, at least according to universally agreed upon human rights standards, do not fit into the modern 21st century world context or sphere of events

4:19 This is funny to me (funny as in a funny smell, not a funny joke) because with Eid Al-Adha just around the corner, essentially the whole premise of it is that Ibrahim (Islam's version of Abraham) was tasked with killing his own son as a "deity" to Allah (Islam's God) but he didn't end up going along with it, only because Allah had supposedly right at the moment where the "sacrifice" was going to take place, told Ibrahim to not proceed with it. It almost feels like Saudi Arabia is trying to take the wrong note from that premise with the unlawful killing of a family member like a son, wife or daughter (as mentioned in the video, see timestamp above) being "justified" by a bogus plea like "honour reasons", which would certainly entail a "sacrifice" reminiscent of that of Ibrahim's son, which Ibrahim didn't end up going along with according to some interpretations of Islamic scriptures
