    Went to Don McGill Toyota here in Houston with check on hand to place an order on a new Tacoma TRD Pro. Sales manager stated that everything in the Toyota website is BS and I have to accept the $10,000 mark up because it’s a dealers normal procedure. Got up and left. 40 year’s relationship with Toyota is on the balance now.

    @AskforBryan absurd but oddly fair. Maybe we should price everything for wealthy people extremely high and add some stickers to make them feel good and then the average person will get average pricing. That's the only way to sustainably overcharge if you want to have a business that scales (no point selling a few hundred trd pros marked up compared to thousands if they were priced better, but hey that's their loss)

    I went through this in 22 for a new Highlander. IMO, this allocation, take what you can get is BS, along with dealers gouging customers with additional mark ups. Toyota needs to go to a strictly "order exactly what you want" process from a menu system. The allocation system is obviously flawed...we picked a model, and trim level and requested a choice of three colors along with a deposit. Still did not get the color we wanted, but was basically told this one is coming in and matches 90% of your request - take it or leave it. Been a Toyota fan for years, but this buying experience left us with possibly looking elsewhere next time.

    Did you search the dealer websites in your area for what you wanted? I bought a Camry XLE in the spring of '22. When I decided what color and options I wanted, I started checking the websites for what the dealers had arriving. It didn't take me long to find one that I liked at a dealership about 20 miles away. I didn't find the interior color I wanted, but everything else was good. I went to the dealer to get an appraisal on my trade and confirmed the estimated arrival date. Since we couldn't agree on a deal with my trade, I bought the Camry and sold my car to Carvana. A little cumbersome, but it worked out. This will be the first and last Toyota I buy new because of the ridiculous Southeast Toyota fee stacked on top of all the other fees in Florida. But, I got such a good payout from Carvana that it all panned out. Good luck in the future.

    Did you watch the video and understand his explanation? Toyota is doing this because 1. They can’t meet the current demand. 2. Can’t build enough of certain cars due to supply chain issues. So they build the most vehicles they can with what parts are available and are not holding up the assembly lines. So yes right now they are building whatever complete cars they can and it’s up to the customer to take it or leave it right now. They do there best to match you with what you want.

  • @katazack

    @katazack

    @@johnholding107 The video wasn't hard to understand. The situation is actually a little better now than it was when I bought my car. There are three times as many Camrys available at the store where I bought my car as when I was shopping. There are 97 Highlanders of all types on the lot or coming in according to their website, but obviously without talking to a sales person I don't know how many are reserved. There was maybe 5 when I was shopping. I heard the same "you gotta take what we can get" speech. My point is, I found the car that closest matched what I wanted myself. Fortunately, one store just happened to have three of them coming in while I was looking. The one I reserved came in damaged, but I was able to switch to another one the day I went to pick it up. It was part detective work and part luck. The color combination I got, black roof over red XSE, is featured on almost all of the commercials for Camry. Maybe they are making more of those, although I still don't see many on the road. I found our best friend the Rav4 she wanted in the color combination she wanted and she had it in four weeks. It was not a hybrid, which is much more difficult to get as you well know. It is a frustrating process. It took me more than two years to find what I wanted and I tried to make deals with four different manufacturers. I would suggest frustrated Toyota buyers do the same to give them more buying options. Good luck.

    @@dansanger5340 There was an earthquake in the spring of '22 that took down several Toyota production lines and also those of some suppliers. Not sure if that is still a factor. The main reason Toyota runs short of cars is that a lot of people want to buy them. There is a Hyundai lot and a Kia lot right beside Toyota where I am, and Mazda and Honda across the street. Toyota is maybe 20 percent full, the Koreans are overflowing. Mazda and Honda probably are 70 to 90 percent full most of the time. Of course, this is anecdotal and in Central FL.

    A year ago I went to a Toyota dealer to check out the Sienna. The salesman said they were backordered about a year. When you could get them, there was a $10,000 premium. I heard the new Prius has the same issue. When people buy vehicles with these market-based premiums, and then availability eases, all of that premium all of a sudden becomes negative equity. I'm going to keep my old car as long as possible.

    My ad agency did a pitch to SE Toyota about 20 years ago and it was an interesting story. When Toyota first started importing cars to the US, they made a deal with an experienced Detroit car guy back in 1968 (Jim Moran) to help set up distribution in the Southeast and, in return, he got a percentage on each and every car Toyota sold in the SE. At the point we made our agency pitch, his daughter was in charge. Needless to say, the Moran family was extremely wealthy and they ran their own fiefdom which, I assume, continues today.

    Exactly, SE and Gulf States are the only two Independent Toyota Distributors and control allocation to their system dealers. All other dealers buy direct from Toyota. These two independent distributors load up the vehicles with stuff before they are sent to the dealers. You have no choice but to pay for those add-ons and negotiate if possible in those two distributor areas. I tried for five months to get a 2023 Venza Limited with the options I wanted in the Gulf States area. No can do, so I was lucky to get a 2023 Lexus ES300h Ultra Luxury with additional options and dealer add-ons in April. Not an SUV; however she is a beauty and I'm getting 43+ MPG in City/Hwy driving. Those "other options in the hybrid space", like the Mitsubishi Outlander, Chrysler Pacifica, and Kia Niro PHEV, are missing one key feature of Toyota's hybrids: longevity of development. All current Toyota Hybrids have powertrains that are the lineal descendant of the 1997 Prius. The Rav4 is currently in it's "4th generation". The inverter, transaxle, electronic motor and ICE engine controls, are all based on 26 years worth of continuous development, improvement, and de-bugging since that first 1997 Prius. No other manufacturer has been in this game even half this long. Toyota's engines are well proven to be capable of delivering 250,000 miles of service if they're not abused and you give them an oil change every 5,000 miles. The HSD transaxle is practically bulletproof. Prius's are used as taxi cabs and Ubers all over the world wherever they are sold, and they get driven 100,000 miles a year and hold up well. Your Highlander should give you at lest 15 years of service at 12,000 miles a year. The battery will probably degrade to below 70% capacity by 150,000 miles, but what you've saved in gasoline cost compared to a non-Hybrid SUV will more than pay for replacing it.

    Toyota owner for over 25 years - but asking customers to pay $85K and then we will tell you what you will get not what you want is total BS. If you cant let your customers order, then remove the build and price configurator from your website. After 25 years I told Toyota to kiss my dollars. Placed order from a competitor 3 weeks ago and will be going into production in 2 days and at dealer for delivery to me in 2-3 weeks. No premium pricing either…oh, and the Toyota model I was looking for barely makes a dent in what the top 3 competitors sell individually. SO I wouldn’t say that Toyota has things under control when customers have to pay premium markups not to get what they want and walk away.

    Nice video. Thank you. I was “on the list” for a 2023 TRD Sport 4X4 Double Cab Long Bed for a couple of months and had the delivery date pushed back 3 times in those 2 months. I was antsy and unsure if I was able to trust the dealer/sales guy/allocation system matrix. I never got the ‘real’ VIN number for that allocation. After the 3rd delay I looked again online at various dealers within 50 miles of my home - this time I included dealers that charged a markup. I found one in a color that I REALLY wanted with everything that I was after and I jumped on it. Rounded up the family and was there within the hour. Another family got there to test drive the same truck before the sales guy had retrieved the keys for our test drive. I mean we got there 5 minutes before they did. They waited around for a little bit after we returned from our test drive but eventually left after about 15 minutes when it was clear that we were moving ahead with the purchase. It’s a different world out there post-Covid. Do what you can. Life is short. Lines are long. The rules are hazy at best.

    My husband has a 2023 Camry XLE AWD in Reservoir Blue. He took delivery this past May. It took our local dealership 6 weeks to get the car from the factory. It was "sort of" a factory order; they were able to snag the car that was already in their computer as a scheduled production and removed some factory items like sunroof, navigation, and plastic sheet metal wrap, saving us thousands of dollars. If we wanted the Camry Hybrid, the wait time was a year. We were coming off a lease of a 2020 Honda Accord Touring and couldn't wait a year. So we have the ICE version and he loves it. He didn't ever open his sunroof on his previous TWO sedans, and doesn't drive anywhere where he needs to spend $$$ on a Navigation system. Now as for me, I am thinking of a 2025 Corolla Cross XSE Hybrid when my Hyundai Kona Limited lease is up next October and hopefully, by next summer, I can put a deposit down on one and get it in my color choice and without ten dealership add-ons and markups in time for my lease end next year. Between Toyota and Hyundai dealerships in my region acting like jerks, I may just wind up buying out my current lease and keep my 2022 Kona for a few more years!

    Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) has 12 regions in the US. TMS directly distributes and controls 10 of these regions, but the remaining two, Gulfstates Toyota (GST) and Southeast Toyota (SET) are independently owned and not subject to TMS's direct control. I don't know how GST runs it's region, but I can attest as to how SET does. The salesman, Bryan, is downplaying the difference between SET and TMS. SET adds junk options to the vehicles and has "holdback markup" in them so the dealerships can pay their sales people less based off a a dishonestly lower profit. They add this snake oil called "Toyoguard"--which is window etching and paint sealant for around $1000-it has a cost of about $600 on the invoice--but about $500 gets paid back to the dealership. They also sell their own junk extended warranty (World Omni or SET Finance somehow associated w/ Fidelity). If at all possible, buy your Toyota from one of the "real Toyota" regions and bypass SET and GST!

After all, how can a Toyota Hybrid be a viable option to an electric car when the customers cannot buy one? 🤔

    What you had mentioned about building in batches kind of makes sense, from my own experience. I had put in a request for a GR86 back in march (Only things I had requested were it to be manual and not black). Come middle of may and I get a call from the dealer that they're getting a white one in July. I was technically 4th on the "list", but everyone who had dibs before me had wanted it in a specific color. Once I got my car in July, I noticed a lot more GR86s in my area so I assume there was just a bulk shipment sent. I guess I had gotten lucky and barely had to wait much time at all. Have heard horror stories of people waiting close to 14 months.

    I bought my '23 Tacoma TRD Sport in the last week of December 2022. I live in Texas so, of course, we're in the Gulf States Toyota Distributor area. The truck had about 6 add-ons from Gulf States which raised the MSRP about $2K. The ONLY reason I bought the truck was because the dealer discounted the truck down $2,500 -- probably because it was a Access Cab and white. I love the truck and am glad I bought it but it would not have happened if it had any type of bs mark up. Toyota needs to get their act together and get back to being a "normal" car manufacturer. I feel your frustration, Bryan. The inventory issue that they continue to have compared to other manufacturers is totally unacceptable considering Toyota's size and market share.

I'm trying to hold out for the new 4th gen Tacoma, but I've been waiting for more info (pricing/first shipment) since July and don't think I can hold out much longer. So, I've been looking for a 22-23 Tundra (used), but the 2 or 3 that came through the FA lot didn't really work out. I saw a few Tundra's online at the Raleigh location. If I knew the new Tacoma's would be available in Dec and the AVL location would get a few TRD Offroad trims, I'd 100% keep waiting.

    Here’s my story. In the spring of 2022 we put down a $500 refundable deposit for a plugin Prius. The deposit is refundable if the customer gets tired of waiting. In addition, most dealers in Utah promise to never sell a vehicle above MSRP. At that point, we were second in line for one. Then in the summer, Toyota ceased all Prius production. So after January of this year, the Prius Prime was announced, with deliveries to start in May. At that point we slipped to seventh on the list from the dealership in Salt Lake City. This Prius was to be the fourth Prius we have purchased from this dealer. We had also put down a deposit at another Toyota dealer. So to date neither dealer has received ANY Prius Primes. It seems like most all Prius Primes are only being allocated to CARB states of which Utah is not. So I started looking for any Toyota dealer within a 500 mile radius of Salt Lake. I found a dealer in Denver to try to work with. Colorado is a CARB state. The salesperson at the Denver dealership contacted me and asked if I would be interested in a Winter Pearl White XLE. I immediately responded saying that is exactly which Prius we would want. The salesperson asked if we were committed to put down a $1000.00 deposit for a January delivery. I said absolutely! Can I give you credit card number over the phone? The salesperson said she was out to lunch but would call back after returning. I didn’t hear anything until the middle of the afternoon. It seemed like the right hand at the dealer was unaware of what the left hand was doing. So the salesperson said the white one had already been promised to another customer. The dealer also had a black one or a Reservoir Blue one, the blue color is almost black. I said that were the two colors we would not accept. So I will be contacted if an appropriate Prius Prime XLE were to be listed in subsequent allocations. I get so frustrated with all the new hybrid Toyotas that have been announced. As you said Toyota is going to do whatever they decide to do. But they don’t seemed to be concerned with some us who have been waiting a year and a half with no idea when (or if) one will be available. Our current Prius is a 2014. As we get older the newer safety features become more important. My wife and I kind of fight who gets to drive our RAV4 XLE. 🤯

    I live in Canada and last year I put a deposit on a Honda Odyssey. I waited six months and the dealer still wasn't able to gve me any idea as to when the vehicle would arrive. If I was desperate, I probably could have purchased one if I was willing to buy the top of the line model and take any colour that was available. They gave my deposit back and now I'm hoping to buy a Toyota. Hopefully I will have better luck. If not, I'll wait another year to see what happens as I have a dependable vehicle that meets my needs. I really don't understand why there is such a short supply of vehicles in North America. I just returned from China a few days ago and the local Toyota plant is building lots of Rav4s. I watched them go by on a daily basis. I spoke to an Engineer that works in the industry and most vehicles are available within a four week period.

    There is a saying 'The customer is the purpose of our business, not an inconvenience to it' What Toyota needs is enough customers to walk away, and they will then realise customers don't fit around their production plans. Japanese manufacturers were famous for the production capabilities, quality control and flexible (mass customisation) production. Cleary Toyota is not prioritising customers. You only have to look at the number of American brands that don’t exist/or lost market share to see how forgetting about the customer worked out!

    I spent 2-1/2 years trying to buy a Rav4 Prime. I had one VERY specific, non-negotiable requirement: it had to have a plain steel roof, which meant it had to be an SE, because all XSE's have the glass roof as standard. I don't like the glass roof because it reduces headroom in the Rav4 by almost 3". I sat in a couple of Rav4 Prime XSE's and an SE with the weather and moon roof option, and on all three of them, when I got the driver seat adjusted the way I like it, the top of my head was brushing the roof. Unacceptable, of course - imagine every time you hit a pothole or roll over a speed bump, and you crack your skull on the roof of your car. So I put in a special order in October 2019 for an SE without the glass roof option, and I waited, and waited, and then on March 15th 2020, the COVID lockdown began, and sometime in the summer of 2020, the sales department at the dealership let me know that my special order had been cancelled by the head office and that no new special orders were being accepted. By then, of course, it was becoming almost impossible to buy high-end graphics cards and even middle-of-road CPU's and DRAM modules were getting hard to find as the chip shortage settled in. By the end of the year, the parking lot at my local Toyota dealership had nothing in it but Tundras and Tacomas - no Hybrids of ANY model - and not even many used cars. I finally had to fly clear across the country last July, from California to Baltomore, Maryland, to find a 2023 SE without a glass roof. And it's not the color I wanted, but after 2-1/2 years of relentless search for a white Rav4 Prime SE without the glass roof, I never found a single one that wasn't already sold when I made my phone call to inquire about availability. And even now, the demand for Rav4 Primes and Hybrids is still way, WAY ahead of the supply curve. There's no shortage of BZ4X's, or Tacoma's and Tundra's, but the Sienna, Highlander Hybrid, Prius and Prius Prime, Camry Hybrid, and Corolla Hybrid - all are pre-sold before they even arrive on the transport truck. But let me say that the dealership I bought my R4P from, Bill Kidd's Toyota in Cockeysville, MD, didn't charge me a dealer markup, just a small fee to cover the out-of-state Title transfers since I was going to register the car in California instead of Maryland. My local Toyota dealer here in Elk Grove, CA also doesn't charge dealer markups, they were just never able to get me a Rav4 Prime without a glass roof. That seems to be a definite problem here on the West Coast: for some reason, Toyota is sending all Rav4 Prime SE's here with the moonroof option. Why, is a mystery. Maybe because it's a $1600 option and more profitable for them? Our next vehicle, If Toyota ever actually make one, would be a Sienna Prime. Take a Sienna Hybrid, put a 30 kW-hr battery under the floor for maybe 75~100 miles EV range, make the second and third row seats easily removable by the owner so it could be quickly converted back and forth between cargo and people-hauling, and Toyota could sell as many of them as they sell Highlanders, if not Rav4's. Look at the popularity of the Prius Prime, the Rav4 Prime, and the Sienna Hybrid they make currently. Now combine all the best features of the Sienna with the tech that makes the Rav4 Prime such an outstanding vehicle, and it would be an invincible sales leader.

    I appreciate your video - but the lack of ability to "order" a specific vehicle is frustrating. About a year from now I expect to be able to buy a Tacoma and will want the manual transmission. By the time I'm ready to commit the money, I will know very specifically what trim and options I want -- and what options I do not want. And if I'm going to spend around $45,000 I will get exactly what I want or I will not buy at all. The problem is that when I get ready to commit to buy something, I will not want to sit around months especially without knowing how long the waiting will take. Along with this I fully know that the Tacoma's competition (Ranger, Frontier) are not available with a manual which means that the Tacoma will be the-only-game-in-town for me. If the 2024 Tacoma sells as well as I expect it to then I will probably have to get my name on allocation lists at every Toyota dealer within a few hundred miles -- at least every dealer that is willing to commit to selling at MSRP without markup.

Explaining the "just in time" manufacturing system would go a long way toward explaining some of the allocation quirks as well. Overall though, you did a credible job of de-mystifying things and for that, I give you credit. You did inspire me as well... I need to make a similar video. One last note... Toyota has NEVER had a system that allowed dealers to just order what we wanted. It has always been an allocation based system and we pick and choose from what they are already planning on building. Special orders were possible but never took less than 6 months and was a very unreliable system.

Im probably not buying a Lexus or Toyota next year... it will be a 1st in 2 decades that I dont have 2 Toyotas in my garage.. sad

    See the problem I have with this allocation lottery is… is it really a lottery? I feel like dealers who charge 5-10k mark up always get more allocations all the time. No they are not sitting because it’s more expensive. They really do get more hard to get cars. Makes me believe they are giving kickback to whoever is in charge of allocating to dealerships. Of course I have no proof of this but it only make sense.

    Yeah it's definitely a lottery. There are way too many dealers all wanting the same stuff to for them have much say. Large dealer is always get more allocations which means a higher chance of getting stuff people are looking for. Those stores are usually in higher population areas with more people that are willing to pay to not have to wait sadly.

    Agree with Bryan, it is a lottery. Toyota actually came out early on in the pandemic and asked dealers to not charge mark-ups and gave statistics on how dealerships that do not charge mark ups will actually sell more vehicles in the long run....they do not reward dealerships for mark ups. The dealership keeps that profit anyhow. They do reward dealerships that sell vehicles and hit their quotas....the more you sell, the more you earn.

I've been on the waiting list since 22nd. of April 2022 for a 2023 GR Corolla Circuit Edition "Heavy Metal" or "Fire Red". That mince I've been waiting already 20 months and I still do not have the car. I know that all 2023 Models have been produce. If that is the case my other option is a 2024 GR Circuit Edition preferably Blue Flame (?) Please let me know if you can help me.

    I’m hoping to grab a ‘25 Camry next summer. If there are any snags I’ll gladly take an Accord, instead. It’s not just long term customers for Toyota to lose. Obviously in the sedan space the domestics have largely abandoned them, so you have a new customer like me who will go elsewhere and likely never return. I have to imagine they’ll be putting out Camrys at a decent clip, though.

    Your comment re Kia and Hyundai is spot on. I live in NJ, and the bulk of new cars in my neighborhood over the last several months are these brands. Personally, I wouldn't go near them. I consider then throw-away cars that look nice. A large dealer in my area took an order for me on a Venza and charges no mark-up. I was told about three- month wait but I expect longer. I am lucky that I can afford the wait since we have a second car and are retired. I sympathize with working folks who need transportation. I can't wrap my head around the long-term effect that covid had on production and the amount of pent-up demand there still is.

  • @HRCfan17
    @HRCfan177 ай бұрын

    Toyota is the worst and it’s unfortunate. While others were like this during covid they are all back to normal for the most part. Toyota still playing the supply and demand game and it’s too bad. I’m not waiting 6 months to a year for a vehicle. I went with another truck that I had built to my exact specifications and it took around 3 months from order to delivery. My wife now wants a vehicle and really wants a Toyota but I think we are going to have to go in a different direction. It really is unfortunate.

    Although I bought a Camry last year, for the most part our family has defaulted to Mazda. I started buying Mazda in the '80s and liked every one I've owned. Over the past few years we've collectively bought six or seven of them and their reliability is about the same as Toyota and the cost is a little less. And you can almost always find what you want among Mazda's existing inventory. Since Mazda discontinued the Mazda6, they do have a hole in their sedan lineup which is how I ended up with the Camry, but a more upscale Mazda6 replacement may be coming soon.

    That’s because Toyota is the largest Japanese automaker in the world. They serve a large number markets outside of the US. Mazda and Subaru are much smaller niche brands which combined are smaller than Toyota, that’s part of the reason they have to rely on Toyota for electrification (Toyota has a 20% stake in Subaru and 5% stake in Mazda). They don’t the R&D costs to design there own hybrid and EV components which is why the CX50 hybrid and the recently announced Subaru Forester hybrid are using Toyota’s hybrid system. The recently built Toyota/Mazda factory in Alabama is another example of technology sharing between these brands.

    I’m a Ford guy but know that Toyota does make a good vehicle and Yes I know Toyota is better than Ford. Now that is out of the way, I ordered my 2022 F150 during the a time of ZERO new inventory. I put my custom order in and got a website where I can check the build status and it showed up two weeks earlier than expected. It was about four months. Rumour has it that they were only building vehicles that customers ordered with no random builds for the dealer to sell. Also prior to Covid, I’ve always ordered my new Fords and in theory the custom orders goto the front of the queue as it’s a vehicle that is sold and won’t sit on the lot. Ford was good to me (as they always have been) and I was still able to pull off getting my new truck in June 2022 with 0.99% financing for 72 months and far below MSRP at invoice plus $200 as my employer has a fleet pricing agreement with Ford that extends to their employees. #happycustomer

    I bought a brand new 2023 Toyota Camry 2.5l petrol 1 week ago after waiting for 6 months. On the day of delivery, I noticed the overall fuel consumption on the trip computer was 150l/100km which is 20x the norm while the odometer was showing just 8.9km. The salesperson told me the off-the-charts fuel consumption was caused by prep work done in their workshop. Is he correct? I am worried that someone was fooling around with the car and had revved the engine at high rpms for prolonged periods of time while stationary and had caused irreparable engine damage.
