I love that you already called me out for my first R-rated being The Passion of the Christ 😂 You know your audience. Why? Because I’m too young for all the other R-rated stuff and my parents decided I should get the experience of watching it (while my younger sisters got to watch the edited-out bad word version of Ant Man). Why I have such a distinct memory of those from 1-2 years ago? I have no idea.

It was The Passion of the Christ because I am homeschooled.
I definitely didn't walk away from that documentary thinking every conservative Christian had a home school experience like the one in that documentary.
I’d like to hear Josh’s take on Shiny Happy People if he watches it. I think he might have a different perspective than Jordan did.
I grew up in IBLP/ATI, watched the documentary, felt the first three episodes were pretty accurate and the last one jumped the shark. Agree with you on the gut feeling about Jim Bob... met him at a conference once and got the same impression.

While I didn’t grow up IBLP, I do agree that last episode was painting Christianity as something its not
In Jordan's defense, Superbook and The Flying House were released by the same studio and they look pretty similar
I grew up homeschooled and in a Christian home. We were way more sheltered than most and I always knew something was off. Watching the documentary was really difficult for me since a lot of what my father taught lined up with Bills teachings. As an adult in my 30's now (married and has kids) I've been diagnosed with PTSD and many cronic health and pain conditions brought on by the amount of stress i was subjected to as a kid. I thought the documentary was fantastic! But was lacking one more episode. That episode would have been a deeper dive on the victims who have spoken out about Bills cult. What does their life look like now? Their faith? Family and religion? Etc. To show the wide range of where everyone is now in their life.

One of the big issues I seen with the documentary and they touched on it in the podcast, they didn’t isolate it to just Bills “cult” which I agree was definitely a cult.(which I agree it happens outside of him but you need proof before you bask people) they literally bashed the whole baptist denomination/home schoolers.

An organization teaching, " honor your father and your mother." Is not bad. It does not mean that they are saying that parents can do whatever they want and the kids have to go along with it or go to he'll. Jesus taught about turning other other cheek. He was not advocating for people taking abuse. People need to cool their jets and stop using IBLP as a scapegoat for all their issues growing up and things they haven't let go of or forgiven their parent's for.
“They’re gonna make a smart contact lens that you can put in your eye. And they’re gonna call it, wait for it, iEye”-Jordan Taylor, from the Messy Monday’s Episode; Things that Won’t be cool in 20 years.

I was thinking about that episode too
I think most of the players in the Duggar situation were bad, asides from the girls who are victims. My mom use to love all the Duggars' stuff, but like Jordan, even as a kid, I didn't have a good feeling about them. It was like their kids were just pawns. Amazon is a corporation and has no interest in helping those girls but the idea that their own parents wouldn't help them is just so much more egregious
Love the podcast but just wanted to clairfy a little bit about the Duggars. The Duggars are part of the IBLP (Institute of Basic Life Principles). The documentary "Shiny Happy People" didn't do the best at what they were trying to get across, but the IBLP is more of cult than Christianity if you look into their beliefs. The IBLP has their own homeschooling curriculum and it's not good. It doesn't have the typical schooling structure that most other homeschooling curriculums have. The IBLP also has different programs for the kids and can be used as a sort of punishment. The military part that Jordan was talking about was the ALERT Academy. The duggars put Josh through that program and some of their other sons as well for them to learn a lesson, usually with not thinking and doing stuff to girls.
Seeing the Cult like evil of the Duggar family and the scandals of hillsong church has made me realize that everyone is a sinner no matter what title they give themselves.

Respectfully, Jordan, I watched the Shiny Happy People documentary, and I did not get the impression they were demonizing home schooling as a whole. It was very focused on the IBLP group of Christians and how that specific religious group is breeding harmful behaviors within their community. They emphasized many times that IBLP teachings were the cause of the issues discussed, I don't think they were trying to paint all homeschoolers with the same brush.

This documentary wasn’t attacking homeschooling or Christianity. It was pointing out how bad this cult was, how bad their education curriculum was. Also to make people realize how intrusive this movement is into mainstream culture. My church wasn’t IBLP but was influenced by it’s teachings in the 80’s. My child just told me that the Advanced Training Institute (ATI) materials were being used in their PUBLIC elementary school in the early 2000’s. Bill Gothards teachings have infiltrated all aspects of our lives and we aren’t even aware of it. It’s a cult. It’s very sneaky and it’s everywhere.
My first R-rated movie was Air Force One. I was 17 and a huge Harrison Ford fan, so my mom said that she thought I was old enough to handle it. It quickly became one of my favorites. In fact, of the handful of R-rated movies I’ve watched, Harrison Ford was in probably about half of them 😂

Yeah, I agree. It's the same way I saw it. At no point did the documentary say that this is the reality for everybody, just what the victims and other ex memebers experienced with IBLP and ATI. Since the documentary I saw there were even more people on KZread that felt they could talk about their experiences with this cult, which I think it's very valuable. There are some Christians that have felt the need to come out to say "but I'm not like that" when no one said they were. But honestly every time I see them react like this I'm starting to look sideways at them... Me thinks they're protesting a bit too much...

"Being disliked when you have the freedom to be disliked... It's almost like being born again." I felt the anointing when Jordan said that 😭
I just watched the Shiny Happy People series. I agree 100% with what you said, Jordan. I am a homeschooling, Christian mom. I feel awful for all who were hurt by this cult, BUT that’s not everyone’s story. There are a lot of homeschooling Christians whose lives and goals do not align with what was portrayed. It paints Christians and homeschoolers as radicals and with evil agendas. It was disturbing to watch. That is not true Christianity. That is not all homeschoolers, by far! “They” are pushing their agenda that conservative Christians are bad and manipulative and oppressive.
A lady from my office also grew up in the IBLP. She told us about this documentary coming out, but after watching it herself, she says they only scratched the surface of what they could have said. If Christians had made this documentary, it may have been more informative about how they took verses and ran with their own interpretations, and where they were just making up extra things. (It reminds me of the Pharisees extra rules.)

The point of Shiny Happy People was not that every Christian or homeschooler is as dysfunctional as the Duggars and the IBLP, but that certain beliefs are harmful, especially when taken to the extreme. These beliefs are pretty widespread in some form or another. Many Christians believe in complementarianism and uphold some type of purity culture values. The docuseries shows the harm those beliefs can cause in the extreme, and the way those beliefs can create opportunities for abuse. I was homeschooled K-12 and knew people who landed all over the spectrum. This documentary resonated with me because I recognized these kinds of people and these extreme beliefs -- I knew people who believed and lived this way. They weren't even IBLP or that kind of Protestant, but the beliefs had seeped out into some parts of Christian culture. The people I knew who believed these things were considered by others to be well-meaning and harmless. The attitude was, "Oh, that preacher tells his congregation that girls shouldn't play sports because that will teach them to question their future husband's authority? Oh well. *shrug* He seems like a nice guy." Shiny Happy People is a warning to us, including those of us who are homeschoolers or religious (any faith). The warning isn't don't be a pedophile, or don't put all your kids on TV, or don't beat your babies, or don't ignore your daughters when they've been molested. Those are obvious!! The warning is to watch out for the *extreme beliefs* about children's obedience, women's submission, devaluing education, isolating from "the world," etc. that led the Duggars and other IBLP members to make those horrible decisions.
You’re right Jordan! The “documentary” reviewed itself to be a hit piece against conservative Christian homeschoolers in the last episode. I have a feeling other commenters didn’t watch it through or missed the sections about how we want to overthrow the government with our homeschool army. 🤣

I always like hearing your philosophies on food because I'm trying to adopt the same ideas. I want to eat healthy but I don't want to be obsessed with trying to control everything about my food. I find myself liking your podcast more and more, and I think the reason why is because some people who try it aren't as good at videos that aren't heavily planned, scripted and edited. You two have your natural dynamic so it's like the best parts of your other content (I always like it best when Josh interjects during Messyges, sorry Jordan!) So tired of people assuming these big companies have some evil agenda- it's a business, and they have a bias because they're human. But you don't know their motive unless you can suddenly read minds. Also, people are adults and should think for themselves about whatever they watch, but they sometimes don't. Some people will unfortunately think homeschooling and Christianity are always toxic from that documentary, some people will watch Blimey Cow and assume they're right about everything, both are silly.
Honestly, disagree a bit with your take on Shiny, Happy People. I didn’t see the documentary as critical of *all* homeschoolers or *all Christians* (and I say that as a proud, Christian homeschooler from K-12). It was a documentary about a specific subject, a homeschooling/Christian cult, and that subject is pretty much entirely bad or at least unpleasant. Sure, not all homeschoolers/not all Christians, but this was a huuuuuge movement, and even though my family and other homeschool friends weren’t part of IBLP, there was still some homeschool cultural osmosis going on that led me to being familiar with a lot of the more toxic teachings. Plus, at the time, we all thought of the Duggar family as “Well, we don’t agree with some of their interpretation of scripture, but it’s nice to see such a good Christian family getting a platform.” We had NO idea how rotten their foundation was.

My mom was always furious about this and only let me see classic old films from the 1930s-1960s. I loved Superbook a lot. I sang Psalty songs and we did Psalty church plays. McGee and Me taught me great lessons! Gospel Bill I can quote and I met him as a kid haha. Met Carmen too. Joy Junction I never got into but my older brother liked it. Gerber was cute! I had only 2 VHS tapes though. I feel like this episode of your podcast was the most interesting to listen to. I really loved the conversations about the VR goggles, the AI stuff, and the idea of people trying to paint homeschooling as a bad thing through the one situation that the Duggars had. What is odd is, there are so many different types of homeschoolers just as there are different types of people in public or private schools. :: sigh :: Thanks again for another great podcast.
Thank you for talking about ordinary stuff, like the 80/20 rule
My first R rated movie was the Hobbit: Battle of the five armies (extended edition).
The thing about the VR goggles and the Metaverse is that it feels an awful lot like how Ready Player One (the book since I never watched the movie) started: everyone was ignoring what was going on in the real world by immersing themselves in the virtual one and eventually most of the planet was living in abject poverty, or very nearly.
I had a dumb phone with limited texts and call minutes until 18. That is 100% the way to go.
Netflix and Amazon have been taking fringe cases and making entire documentaries, it's been a whole wave - the documentary "Our Father" is another example. They fixate on the one weird dude, the outlier, then they extrapolate to implicate every single homeschooler, Christian, etc. It's angering ngl. I think you and others extrapolate. Reasonable people (I like Jordan but he can be dramatic) will see it for what it is, a sensational documentary about a cult that was made because it's a bizarre, wrong situation but also because they know people will watch it. Amazon and Netflix are businesses. Maybe they're catering to atheists and probably some people who work there are liberal but I don't think they're trying to brainwash people, as people can still think for themselves and choose not to pay money for Amazon or Netflix if you don't like them.
You all are great. 😆
I got a tablet when I was 12 bc my parents said they would buy me a phone once I was in highschool but if I wanted one sooner I had to pay for it myself. Long story short I'm dealing with a pretty severe addiction to my phone and highly suggest anyone looking at getting their kids a phone to get a dumb phone. It will be much healthier for their brain, they'll be more mature by the time they are allowed to get a smart phone and then can be better at understanding screen time limits and the affects of phones on our minds. Also my relationship between my parents and I was awful once I got the tablet. We were always fighting about it and it was something that made me hate them for a long time. 3yrs after I moved out I am just finally really mending our relationship and becoming close with them again. Trust me it's worth it to get them a dumb phone. I know they'll be begging you for a smart phone but that is so much easier to deal with than the consequences a smart phone for your kid will be...
"Time to unplug guys! But keep watching this show." :D
Does anyone know if this podcast is available on Spotify? I like to listen while I work but I can't easily use KZread.
Cf. the VR discussion -- I'm currently reading a book called _The World Beyond Your Head_ that has a lot of relevant philosophical critiques of this kind of technology. It talks about how not having to *physically* interface with the real world really handicaps our entire development and experience as human beings.
People are pulling their kids out of public school left and right and THEY ARE SCARED. What do they do? Make propaganda like Shiny, Happy People. Did it happen? Absolutely. But is it the norm for Christian homeschoolers? Nope.
First R-rayer movie i watched was Argo, while I was in College.
The dark tower is a beautiful movie about crushing fear and a sense of upbringing your self to make a strong decision while surrounded by darkness and letting go of the past for yourself not for others to become the next gunslinger that was a big deal in the movie The Dark Tower is the first R rated movie I’ve seen
I hadn't heard of the Apple VR goggles, but I bet I'll be getting a ton of ads for them now haha. I don't really know what to think of VR, I played a demo of a VR game once at a gaming conference and it was a cool experience but I don't feel the need to ever do it again. The older I get, the more I don't even like texting with my friends. I'd much rather use texting to set up a time to get together, and then catch up in person. Keeping up a conversation over text just doesn't appeal to me anymore. So everything going virtual and everyone being in their "separate realities" as Josh said isn't something I'm excited about. Maybe I'm just old lol
I had never watched any of those cartoons. I think I saw a few of them as I flipped past the weird church channels. Veggietales was the first Christian cartoon I watched, it came out when I was in college.
My first R-rated movie was Air Force One. I watched it with my dad . Such a good movie. I think I was 12 or 13. My dad made us close our eyes at the scary parts.
As a parent who gave my kids their 1st phones at about 13, NO NO NO!!!! Run away! If I could go back I would not EVER give my kids a smart phone. Flip phone at 13, fine. And I would not ever get one myself. I am currently working to wean myself off my smart phone, but still use it some for work.
I was waiting for Last Chance Detectives in the game!
American Sniper was my first R
It is going to be a cross in between a Brave new world and 1984…
26:31 I used to think as a kid it would be so cool if I could take pictures with my eyes. Back then having cameras in your phone wasn’t a thing so I imagined you would just blink and boom a picture would appear. If you used those goggle things that’s something that could actually happen
My first R-rated movie was Unplanned when it first came out. Not The Passion of the Christ, but still classic Christian kid example
My first (only) R-rated movie was Tailor Tinker Soldier Spy. I watched it in a honors class I took in undergrad called History of Espionage. Pretty cool class, taught by an ex-FBI analyst. I don't remember anything about the movie though, haha.
The documentary almost seems like it’s in retaliation to Kirk Cameron’s documentary Homeschool Awakening. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it!
I haven’t thought of Super Book or Flying House in AGES
10:50 lol
You guys ever seen the anime Sword Art Online and its movie Ordinal Scale? This is where VR is going, SAO is about being trapped in a virtual reality video game and Ordinal Scale is about a game like Poke'mon GO thats augmented reality. The Ordinal Scale is about what would happen if one was able to steal the memories of someone else through a VR headset. Kinda drastic but points out where VR and AR are going, at least in the minds of the Japanese who are the inventers of some of our coolest tech. Edit to add: I did watch that Dugger documentary and as a previously homeschooled kid who is now homeschooling I was offended but what can one expect from a worldly viewpoint of a "conservative family" Amazons just out for ratings and if they throw homeschoolers under the bus to do so, so be it.
Waitttt…. We just passed over Jordan not knowing Hansen, lol. I guess you have to be an exact age to remember that flash of popularity.
Air Force One with my dad- I believe that’s what it is called. I was a late teenager and he let me watch it cause it was an 80s movie and got R for gun shooting and language. Glad my dad showed it to me.

Jk it was the chemist movie about poison water in the west. Erin Brokavich or something- watched it for chemistry extra credit
The first true R rated movie I saw was Joker. It blew my mind. I sat in the theater with my jaw dropped for half the movie.
I watched "The Passion of the Christ" on Easter at the ripe age of eleven, which was my first R-rated movie.

Me too 😂
I thought that the first 3 episodes of the documentary were pretty clearly targeted at the IBLP and not at Christianity or homeschooling in general, but the last episode was more negative about Christianity in general. I think the the point they were trying to make was to show that the IBLP teachings, which are not biblical, have seeped into the general Christian culture & even teachings of many Christian denominations. But, they definitely didn't make that point clearly enough & it just came across as negative against Christianity in general.
My first was Air Force one!
The first R Rated movie I ever saw was Spotlight, the film about the Boston Globe reporters who released the article bringing attention to the sexual assault scandal in the Catholic Church back in 2002. It’s an absolutely fantastic movie.
