Love to see a fellow Nigerian killing it 👏🏿👏🏿 In reference to the video, I think you mean that the barrier of entry in photography is thin in comparison to other professions. It can be relatively cheap to enter the industry but in the long run, the costs start to add up and it eventually becomes just as expensive as any other profession if not more - cost of vehicle for transporting gear, cost of updating equipment (some lens are $20,000 and some cost even more), cost of education to keep your skills sharp and up to date, hours spent educating yourself (time is money) and so on and so forth.

Enlightening. I like your dad's comparison with the printing business. I started a desktop publishing business in the mid 80s, and the equipment costs were scary. I had to avoid mainstream computers like the Mac and PC, because of the eye-watering costs for a system with enough power to handle graphic manipulation. I also partnered with a printing business because there was no way I could afford to start up a graphics shop and print shop, even with business loans. I totally agree that while not cheap, photography is no more expensive a business than most and a lot more affordable than many. Think of the costs involved with starting a small cafe or bakery. Think of the costs of starting a mechanic's workshop. The tools and equipment costs are in the 10s of thousands of dollars.

It's not expensive if you get only what you need. Are you thinking about doing any courses on Capture One. I'd like to purchase the color grade Dark and Light tones for capture one.

Buying expensive gear is an investment. When you are a professional photographer? Yes you should invest in gear for it to be reliable. Like a faster camera, more megapixels, faster lighting etc. If you are not a professional photographer, then you don’t need to invest in gear like that at first. Being a photographer for a long time now, I noticed many, many people eventually get to a point where they say… I need a better camera or better lighting. It may not be the things you need in the beginning but as a professional in the industry, eventually you will run into having to invest in better gear. But to get started? Use your phone. Train your eye. Invest later when photogrpahy gets more serious and you make a living from photography. That’s my take on it.

If you're smart, you can really start for pretty much nothing. Photography is about what you can do with what you can afford.

Technically you are right but because someone bought a course for $299 doesn't grant him the opportunity to master the job. He just has to keep spending to know and if we don't tell them this truth they may dive in a receive a shock blow right in the face. With the way photography is going, I won't say it's a hubby anymore. It's has become a real profession. Maybe we aren't magnifying it enough yet for others to be aware.

You know other businesses too have to keep spending even more too. I feel it’s a relatively affordable business to start and that’s what the video was trying to touch on

It's cheap it you just keep to the base gesrz but then you are very limited. Ofcourse you by second hand. It's still expensive and only getting more expensive as products are getting more expensive

Clients spending a lot of money expect you to show up with professional equipment. Even if the job can be done with less.
