I always liked Shujinko and never understood why everyone was hating on him, dude accepted his mistake and worked on correcting it instead of blaming anyone.

Exactly, Shujinko deserves more respect! Most of the people who hate Shujinko either didn't understand his story or didn't pick up all his moves after his Konquest mode ending. If hardware limitations weren't so bad back then he would have had an entire second part of recruiting MK Kharacters to help him fight Onaga and then defeating Onaga after absorbing their powers. Shujinko needs a proper playable redemption arc.

I agree with all of you. Also, I love that he uses many moves of other characters. He became the SECOND character in the series to have both Scorpion’s spear AND Sub-Zero’s freeze move (The first was Reptile in MK1). I always had fun using his “borrowed” special moveset for hilariously ridiculous combos, similar to how people did the same with Kitana’s special moves in MK2. Of course, you had to unlock these moves, but it was worth all the trouble to track them down (the one for Scorp’s spear was insane, you had to win a round where he did 300% damage AND healed, my only solution was to continually quit and try again until I got Baraka). I commonly chained the spear, freeze, bicycle kick, the two moves from Li Mei in my combos with him. And as a bonus… if you wanted to see the end of his quest… you then would face Onaga, and if you unlocked the bicycle kick it was much easier. Underrated character, the playability alone to me made him awesome.

People acting like this dude wasn’t groomed and manipulated at preteen age by Onaga. He wanted to be a champion like Lui Kang, and he genuinely thought he was aiding the elder gods. Dudes lore is actually pretty damn good and fleshed out, and he’s a helluva tragic hero who redeemed himself and corrected his mistake. Now because the general population shit on him, Boon and the team shit on him too, it’s a damn shame

This guy travelled across all the realms and learned the fighting styles of some the most badass warriors around. Sure he was misled all his life, but he still accomplished a lot and kicked tons of ass

I feel like maybe the shunkijo Cassie defeated didn't have the power onaga gave him to learn others abilities. I think he never got this ability because he wouldn't have been defeated by Cassie in her arcade ending. He already was one of the strongest after onaga gave him that ability, he just had to train with it.

As The4thSnake also pointed out, Damashi/Onaga was manipulating Shujinko since he was 13 years old as that's his age when you start playing Konquest Mode. Kids will believe almost anything and go along with whatever sounds cool.

Shujinko has one of the best and most heartbreaking stories of all time.

Finally, Someone is giving Shujinko the respect that he deserves..

Shujinko was misled his whole life Sacrificed his youth and life for a quest that wasnt benevolent at all Suffered through his entire life for nothing And still, still manages to keep sanity in check and learn from his mistakes

Honestly one of my favorite Mk characters, it's dumb how people strawman one character flaw or certain action without context or how much they made up for it.

Shujinko was always a top tier in my MK best character list. Unfortunately Netherrealm trashed his lore for some unknown reason similar to Kung Lao. It shows how they treat him in Cassie Cage's ending in MK X where she killed him while mistaking him for Shang Tsung. Randomly died like Kenny in South Park.

What I liked and disliked about that ending is that Cassie was around shujinkos level. So that means in 20 years , it took Cassie to reach that level. Yet because she had her dad's ability, that gave her a type advantage versus shinnok. Only reason she won, besides notably being the strongest of the new generation by far.

One of the main reasons why I don’t like the new timeline, older more stronger and skilled characters from past Mortal Kombat games get knocked around like they are jobbers to most of Netherrealm’s new roster, or should I just say that the power scaling is all over the place, and is shown very poorly.

I hate that ending but in all fairness he is a long white haired, bearded old man with shape-shifting and power mimicry. If anyone was gonna get mistaken for Shang Tsung it'd have to be him. That said I'm gonna miss him, I literally just finished that game and I love Shunjinko, he's like a dumb puppy, just so trusting and naive.

You can't find that many fighting game characters that got that great story in one game like Shujinko, the konquest mode is a great experience to explore the world of Mortal Kombat and see Shujinko grow as a fighter and a character, only people who played it knows that.

Shujinko is really underrated and overhated. Great video and explanation of his story.

He might have been a fool but that man did more traveling, more networking, more training, and had more development than any other Earthrealm fighter. Respect this man. People saying he put earthrealm in danger... but love Kano....

I adore Shujinko, I feel like his life is a cautionary tell we can all learn from and I like seeing older characters in fighting games. Not everyone has to be eternally twenty.

Put some respct on this man's name. Shujinko spend his life thinking he was serving the Elder Gods and fighting for good. How could anyone have seen through the deceit of a forgotten King that was dead during that time. If anything, the old master became a true hero at the end of the game (his arcade ending), since he risked everything to rectify the mistake he had caused. A wonderful journey, that sadly was never talked about, not even by the devs themselves, after Deception. Shujinko was just one of many faces once Armageddon rolled around a couple years later and Taven became the new protagonist. But Shujinko still remains the only character in the Mortal Kombat franchise we, the players, were allowed to follow from childhood, up to him becoming an old man. Truly unique and very well executed in my opinion.

I have to admit that Shunjinko deserves more respect. His story in Mortal Kombat Deception was definitely good and Shunjinko did redeem his mistake by being the one who defeated Onaga, where the deadly alliance and Raiden failed. That alone should earn Shunjinko respect.

Shujinko has the most lush lore in the franchise’s history. There’s depth, there’s failure, triumph, plot twists, double crossings, triple crossings… how could anyone hate him? Be for real.

People say Shujinko is naive and guide. People forget Shujinko met Damashi at such a young age. A young kid meeting a being that seemingly came from stories that he only heard stories about. A Godlike Avatar claiming to be a servant of the Elder Gods asking him to go on a legendary, how does he say no to that? Respect Shujinko

Shujinko was always my favorite MK character, mainly because you play through his entire life. Noone else got that treatment. He doesn't even give up at the end, he trains hard and presumably learns even more fighting styles, teams up with Nightwolf, who then seals Onaga away once Shujinko kicks his ass. He then returns in Armageddon just to flex on Taven, saying he wants to beat Shao Kahn and the others, which he probably could've. Fear the old man in a profession where men die young.

I think people didn’t realize that Shujinko was preyed on by Onaga as a young kid aspiring to be a warrior. Once he finally found out the reason behind his quest, he sought to rectify his decades long mistake, and he did just that.

Ever since I first played Deception the year it came out, Shujinko has been my favorite MK kharacter. And him being deceived is understandable. Imagine you’re an impressionable teen who gets handed powers that rival the most decorated warriors. You’d be absolutely stoked and willing to collect gems from different realms. The hate is dumb and NRS needs to give him respect.

The moment I saw the recommendation as it just aired. Another one from the Den? Hell yeah!

I’m a fan of lore heavy characters. But let’s be honest, shujinko pisses people off because my man sat in the can for decades and decades based on some bullsh*t. My man allowed that to happen when he could have broke out.

He defeated 90% of the roster in Deception and was trained by nearly everyone on that roster Fought Onaga in Mortal Kombat when Shao Khan feared doing so himself Hinting Shunjinko is more powerful than Shao Khan Was the probably the only fighter strong enough to do Kombat with Onaga long enough for Nightwolf use his magic to send Onaga to hell.

I actually saw my brother play through this whole thing! In versus I had to stick with Scorpion just to get a single win on my bro. But it was fun watching him play this main dude that wasn’t Liu Kang. I think more fighting games should change up its main protagonist every few timelines. (That’s only something I see with KOF) I sucked at this 3D era at the time (was more of a Guilty Gear and KOF nerd at that time but still grew up loving MK). Followed the lore since MK2 where Reptile became one of my mainstays. Shaolin Monks was killer too! Dated a girl who learned that I had that game along with Deception. To my surprise she said, “Deception and Shaolin Monks was the best games….(until 9 came out…. And so on.)

Shujinko is honestly one of the most underappreciated characters of all time and remains one of my favourite Mortal Kombat characters period. Also for some reason I love that line in Konquest mode "So it seems that I have indeed known you all of these years...." when he first meets Onaga, his relationship with Damashi was flipped on its head in that instant

Shujinko has always been in my top 10 Mortal Kombat characters. Granted, I only cared about the original timeline, as I grew up on that one and honestly loved Armageddon’s conclusion to it. But that being said, Shujinko had it all: Good story arc, a fleshed out character, a wide variety of moves (once unlocked), an epic quest, some scary moments (that scene with Monster, anyone? Or being forced to confront Baraka?), and overall just a fun character. For anyone that’s curious, my top ten characters goes as follows… #10: Ermac #9: Kitana #8: Smoke #7: Sub-Zero #6: Shujinko #5: Shao Kahn #4: Onaga #3: Reptile #2: Baraka #1: Scorpion

Bro I vibe with this so much. I honestly love Shujinko as a character and don’t understand why people hate on him. His ability to quickly absorb fighters skills is epic and he trained with so many of MKs greatest warriors making him absurdly powerful. Yeah he got played by Onaga (Damashi) but he always had the purest of intentions. Plus he still defeated him in the end and redeemed himself.

Shujinko was the man, until he came across Cassie Cage 😔. God I can’t stand modern day Mortal Kombat, I’m still saying that Mortal Kombat ended after Armageddon, that’s my canon ending to the entire franchise, my opinion and mine alone, yet I already know someone is going to come into the comment section and say, YEAH but it wasn’t the canonical ending because Raiden went back in time and of course ruin my happy ending to a once great franchise. I’m sorry, I just don’t like the new Mortal Kombat timeline, there, I said it, it did WAAAAAAY more damage to Mortal Kombat’s characters and main story in my opinion. My favorite Mortal Kombat games were the original 3 Mortal Kombat games/Ultimate/Trilogy. Yet, I agree with FightersDen, Mortal Kombat Deception was a great Mortal Kombat game, point, blank, period. Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance was a return to form, and Deception was the last great Mortal Kombat game, Deception really felt like it was the Empire Strikes Back of Mortal Kombat’s 3-D PS2/XBOX trilogy. Shujinko deserves all the respect for being a great Mortal Kombat character, he is probably one of the strongest and most skilled warriors of the franchise, he’s badly underrated and forgotten by MK fans, he doesn’t deserve all the hate at all.

What did people expect? The game is called MK: Deception. The Konquest Mode storyline had to fit the title. Shujinko was deceived by Onaga but he did redeemed himself. Shujinko definitely deserves respect.

There's one large problem that made Shujinko really suffer in the grand scheme, he was supposed to be Lui Kang's replacement which was a tall order given the impact he had and the public execution in Deadly Alliance. I should also say that if Konquest Mode had one last arch that was just the arcade mode leading up to Onaga then it would've made the ending feel more completed given that roughly 90% of all arcade ladder endings are non-canon or a "what if" scenario.

Deception is one of the best games

Theory on why people didn't respect Shujinko: He wasn't one of the marquee names. I took a bit longer to appreciate Deception as something new. Deception produced a lot of new characters that didn't land, so people think the game is whack. People actually feel the same way about Cassie, but Cassie is the child of a familiar name. The funny part is Shujinko earned his spot. Cassie didn't. And it might be why they had Cassie beat Shujinko in MKX in her ending.

Honestly the biggest reason is him being a "replacement scrappy" for Liu Kang. Doesn't help this is the same game that brought him back as a mindless zombie... as one of the final unlocks from conquest mode. Can see why that felt like a kick in the teeth.

That deception intro movie never gets old I always watch it when I boot up deception or unchained.

I was so stoke about Shujinko when he was the new hero for earth realm having a Pai Me looking monk/kung fu master. The mans a bad A$$, and took responsibility even though it was all deception, and I felt that we needed a new characters and direction for this franchise, and MK Deception brought that to the table. But Raiden becomes a poor sport, and I believed he can take on Liu kang hand down. Also he as my respect.

Mk fans reasons for hating shujinko: "He's old and stupid"

Raiden screws up. Scorpion gets manipulated and acts out of anger selfishly. Sonya gets mad at Cassie until she rereads her report. I mean if you’re gonna hate a character for being dumb or getting tricked and used, you’re not gonna like a lot of MK’s cast.

S-Tier video, Well Done Fightersden. I remember beating Deception's konquest as a teenager. It taught me alot about the Mortal Kombat lore such as Edenia, Netherrealm, Outworld..etc.

I liked shujinko’s character but the problem I have with him is that he was too trusting not questioning Damashi whether he was good or bad being fooled wasted his whole life until old age as a tool for the dragon king, he does redeem himself in his ending but remember in dark raiden’s ending where he Narrates he kills shujinko for his mistakes also shujinko 3rd design after he went in that pool in the chaos realm where he’s probably in his 30s, they should’ve sticked with that instead because it’s really stupid how he stays in prison for years by hotaru in the order realm rather than using his powers and abilities to break out before he became an old man after he spent many years with nightwolf before he reached his 40s in his 4th design but it’s weird how shujinko ages while the other characters remained the same even Bo rai Cho but remember he’s from outworld so he’s over hundreds of years old like kitana even the developers called him a next generation liu kang since liu kang and Kung Lao in their mk11 intros they mentioned him so overall I don’t hate shujinko but he was too trusting even doing quests for the bad guys like shao khan and wasted his life in prison so I really hope we see him again in the future the same with taven.

The way he was deceived actually makes sense as he was only a boy when he was first groomed into his role. He was close to manhood and aspired to become a great hero. DK took advantage of that ambition and child naïveté telling him what he wanted to hear most of his life.

Hating Shujinko just because he made a mistake is exemple of not understanding character arcs: It's all about character growing and changing through the journey, which also includes making mistakes and learning from the experience. In the case of Shujinko, he made a mistake by helping Onaga but it was understantable (he started as naive 13 old kid who wanted be hero and Onaga used his dream to manipulate him) and he recongnize he did wrong and tried to fix the damage he caused. His mistake doesn't make Shujinko a bad character, on the contrary, it makes him interesting and relatable protagonist, as well highlights Onaga as cunning villain and not just big brute monster for the heroes to punch. Plus the konquest mode does shows Shujinko, as he gets older, starting to notice something is wrong and questions Onaga methods, proving that Shujinko isn't a complete blind fool and gives suspense if Shujinko will be able to realize he's been manipulated or not.

Not to mention that Shujinko is not only more powerful than some legacy characters but he's the most powerful character in the Mortal Kombat universe. Period.

Uniting the komatants would definitely be the holy grail of hypeness, Shujinko's whole story is like a movie, a damn good movie. Also imagine him returning, a warrior that knows every single fighting style fused with the powers of every fighters, makes a pretty great final boss for me.

I have always liked Shujinko, and am glad he has some inclusion in MK1, albeit a Kameo. I had a few details wrong (because it has been about 20 years since I played the game), but I had most of his overall story right. The thing is, a lot of folks don't realize that Onaga is arguably the strongest MK character in the universe. He is the avatar of the One Being, the source of all power and creation. And Shujinko beat him up when he was an old man. Being old in things never bothered me, either. I didn't need a 24 year old young stud to beat the Dragon King. The wise old Master (his name is odd, if you translate it from Japanese to English it equals Master, but if you translate Protagonist from English to Japanese, it comes out Shujinko, so it is a double entendre) beat the crap out of the BIGGEST threat. We deserve Shujinko in MK1 as playable.

I don’t get why people blame the events of Deception on Shujinko. He didn’t release Onaga, Reptile did. Shujinko didn’t even give Onaga the last Kamidogu it was Quan Chi. I hope this video stops the hate on Shujinko.

Shujinko is hated for making bad decisions… Scorpion literally ended someone because he believed a scheming boi and then neglected giving the heroes a chance to be brought back in MKX.

As bad as the fandom was with Shujinko, it wasn't as bad as what happened to him in Armageddon. The writers did that man dirty in that game. Making him look like a fool that learned nothing after the events of Deception. Seriously, WTF!

My guess why people don’t like him, is that they got played by Onaga, I know I did was a dumb kid, quite frankly I wonder what percentage of players didn’t see the betrayal coming. I guess at least 75% of the people who played deception got played.

Shujinko may have been a Pawn for Onaga throughout the entirety of the Konquest Mode, but he is one of the Strongest Characters in the Mortal Kombat Universe, it was Frustrating that he was brushed to the Side in MK: Armageddon in favor of Taven and became almost non existed in the Netherrealm Studios MK Era. (Like something off from Star Wars Legends where other Stories, Characters and World Building are no longer Canon anymore)

Some FGC characters suffer from the same thing, one example is Capcom's fighting game character Ingrid, who people hate just because everyone else hates, and nobody really gives a good reason why the character is considered "a bad character".
