Is research in medical school a brilliant way for medical students to explore a deeper insight into pathology and systemic issues within healthcare...or is it just becoming another addition to the long check-list for applying to residency. In this vlog, I wanted to discuss the truth about research in medical school, from medical students, and the dangerous trends I am, as well as many residency program directors, have observed that walks away from the original purpose of academic literature. At the end of the day, it's ok if you're a medical student and don't enjoy research, it's not for everyone. But there are ways to make it a little more enjoyable.

I got away with doing ZERO research in undergrad and still getting into med school. I want to be a doctor not a researcher, otherwise I would have pursued a different career obviously. But, doing things you don't want to in order to eventually get what you want is not unique to medicine. Had to do it to get into college, to get into med school, and now residency. At least we know the rules, now it's time to play the game!

SO well said and I agree with you 1000% about med student/premed research. I was so burned out from premed research due to the exact things you mentioned

100% agree with you! Very well said. I'm not super interested in research (did some in undergrad but didn't fall in love with it) but I feel like it's going to be necessary to do to match into a decent residency.

Research is such a double edged sword. Especially when doing the grunt work. Hate how it's used as a yardstick for residency. For me it often ignores the individual. There's so much more to a candidate than the number of publications they have. Sorry about your bad experiences. I've been there too. Not nice to feel exploited/played. Cool that you're doing a NLP project though. I feel like student evaluations are more useful for identifying poor traits than good ones. I like these sit down, talking videos. Keep up the great work!

thank you! i know it's definitely different than the usual vlogs but it's a more concerning topic in medicine that i've wanted to talk about for a while. my hope is program directors understand, but it is hard to erase these long standing ways of evaluating students overnight

@@NDMD Yeah, mate. These things are difficult to change. For me, the softer qualities like empathy, compassion, insight, people skills etc are much better measures for what makes a good doctor. Of course these are harder to measure than objective things like publications. Anyway, hopefully these things will change with time. When you're the program director I'm sure things will be different 😏

Good video as always :) One thing with the videos is the music is typically a lot louder than the speaking parts so I end up adjusting the volume back and forth so I can hear what you're saying. If you brought the music level down just a bit, it might help!

4:30 agreed! it sucks that nice feedback doesn't do anything and AI is set to pick up on keywords - basically content over context, but in interviews, it's the opposite. so it makes no sense. it ends up being kind of like a resume checklist when it shouldn't be bc a person is giving feedback, so the more personable it is, the better?!

Hey Andy, is there a particular regimen or recipe for researching in undergrad? I'm a freshman and I'm not really sure when I should start reasearch or how much is necessary to look good for med school. Also your videos are phenomenal and have helped me immensely with turning my self doubt into determination to become a physician.

first advice: you're a freshman, don't worry about it until later. focus on GPA and leadership now and then research in your later years when you have more foundational knowledge to understand half the words in an academic manuscript. it always looks great for med schools but not a deal breaker!

i did do research in undergrad but got lucky and did clinical research, so i didn't have to experience wet lab research. it's not necessary but one of the best ways to look impressive in the application process especially if you present at conferences or publish. plus tons of connections you can make along the way

Kaur Beauty did "research" for her derm residency application. She was just a glorified admin that read research papers. i hope she makes a video about how reading those research papers was medical research. What she just helping the legal team with patent certifications? Master students read research papers in the first terms to get them ready to do actual research. Really curious.

mmm doing "research" - actually you were just gathering a "number" for the MBAs. MBAs love to reduce employees to a bunch of numbers hihi- is different than being a researcher. A researcher does not know that they spend 8 hours in the lab, the work is all-consuming, even when you are "piping" hihi and you are discovering meaningful stuff that might help patients or the welfare of the world someday. Can the people that got their names on the paper talk about the research for hours? A researcher will. The difference between a scientific researcher talking about their research(which could apply to astrophysics, and robotics) is vastly different than someone talking about the research they are doing.
