It's amazing how unaware people are of the damages paper cups are causing! I'm currently working on an initiative set up in Ireland so encourage people to use their own travel cups. Hopefully we can make a difference. 😊

Damn, I always thought they could be recycled. :/ I think more coffee chains should do offers to encourage people to use reusable cups. I got a reusable Starbucks cup for a pound a while ago that gave me 50p off every time I used it for a short time - it's now changed back to 25p off which is a shame. More discounts on overpriced coffee in reusable mugs = less waste.

Thanks for highlighting this serious issue. I think that it should not be up to businesses to decide whether we get a recyclable or biodegradable or compostable cup or any container for that matter . Legislation should compel businesses to use only recycleable materials and thus the end user doesn't have to make a snap decision about where the cup ends up. It is common sense to be able to reuse or compost these materials.

Just buy a Keep Cup or any ceramic/plastic 'takeaway' cup that you can take in to your cafe. Sometimes they even give you a discount for bringing in a reusable cup.

Where can people watch this episode (or this series on waste) free of charge? Stuff like this should be made known to ALL and ASAP.

BBC iPlayer in the UK. But if it's not on iPlayer I would get the exact name of the show and type it in online, followed with "watch online". ie "Hugh's War on Waste watch online" Best site I've ever found is putlocker, just type it into the search bar. - You can legally read about Hugh's Fish Fight here - www.fishfight.net/. You can currently watch all the Fish Fight ones on 4oD, not sure how long they will be up for though. - www.channel4.com/programmes/hughs-fish-fight/on-demand

I have a pencil made out of 1 recycled vending cup sold to raise funds for 'Pete Goss Sailing' at least 13 years ago in Devon. So technology is around somewhere.

Or, you can make YOUR OWN coffee at home or work. Or go to a place which serves you with washable ceramic cups. You zombie coffee consumers need a kick in the shin.
