The TRUTH About POD Filters: Do You Really Need One?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

www.scooterstreet.com.au
Welcome to Scooter Street! In this video, Brad is here to uncover the truth about POD filters and whether you really need one for your 50cc scooter. He dives deep into what a POD filter does, how it differs from a factory airbox, and the potential performance benefits or drawbacks.
We reveal the limitations of a factory airbox and explain how adding airbox stuffers can increase the airflow. We also caution against installing a POD filter on a stock or mildly modified scooter as it can lead to tuning difficulties and reduced power.
For those with a race setup, Brad recommends the Malossi E5 and E13 POD filters, which offer excellent airflow and in the case of the E5 has an optional cover.
Join the conversation and leave your questions or comments below. Brad and the Scooter Street team are here to help you make informed decisions about your scooter upgrades. Riding all year round. And living in a country that sees a fair bit of the set stuff. Pod filters are a no go. I did use one on my weekend toy though. Mainly because the carb was too big for the air box! 😉

I've not had problems putting pod filters on my stock 50cc's, just gotta have a humongous main jet and it's all fine. Adds fuel consumption though, but having the pod filter makes the jetting much easier since it's easier to remove a pod filter than a stock filter on my scooter since the carb is hidden behind the frame.

Have ran a foam pod filter with an 80cc BBK for 12 years, and only issues I ever have are the idle will get lower in the very hot summer. Just set up the idle in the summer and then no issues. It's a Taotao 2011 and can still do 50mph+. On a sidenote, Still run stock carbs on it as well. Have had to replace a couple carbs just because when I get busy it may sit for while and new carbs are cheap at $20.

Late comment but whats your opinion on the malossi e5 pod filter cover affecting airflow? Does it restrict the airflow at all to make tuning easier or is it solely to keep grime and dust out the filter?

  • @scooterstreetau

It does reduce air flow and protects against particles and water to some extent. Tuning will change when fitted. You may be able to run a smaller carby and jet down.

See our website under Aprilia SR50R parts. You could use any 50cc 2 stroke air box but you would need to tune the carby to suit the NEW capacity of the air box. This involves changing the main jet.

If you alter the air intake the balance will lean in favour of the air in turn less fuel less performance, you need a sweet ratio of both to get the best bang, so if you add air, balance it with more fuel but remember it has a limit so try with 20% of both and then make small changes to hone in on the best performance.

Ive got a malossi 70cc kit for typhoon euro 2, stock box, malossi variator (running weights and white spring from kit) & yellow clutch springs my top speed is 80 and wondering if top speed is a new 2nd gear (sprocket?) ratio change. 75 MJ, 35 PJ at top end or mid speed with full throttle or around 95% it taps out and skips or cuts for few rpms until i un-rev and gas it. Im wondering if i need more oil or needle change, possibly PJ change? I also thought malossi CDI? Sorry for long, TIA for anyone that can help.

    10 ай бұрын

Thank you so much🙌 You did not mention an exhuast, do you have? Gear up will increase the top speed, it can reduce the acceleration but that is overcome with varaitor and Trans tuning. You need to iron out that 95% issue which will be carb related. Do a trial of jetting while the engine is warm, ride the same path on each run and increase the main jet first until it become spluttery and the carry out a small increment of jet sie reductions until the carburettion start to clear and crispens. Run middle clip on needle, once the crispiness is there trial a leaner and a richer needle position.

Legendary, I have a gianelli extra pipe, itialian import. Took my 50cc from 55 to 65km/h without any other tune. My jets are incremental, 70,72,75,78,80,82. The 75 feels like it's close but not perfect, and 78 is too much at top, but may need more of a flogging to clear it up. My a22 needle has always been on notch 1 (leanest) and haven't had issues but a middle notch reset would be wise for tunes, then to adjust once carb tuned?

The jetting is reflective of the flow of air from the filter. So the more flow provided by the filter the carby will require a larger fuel supply to balance. I would say your around the money but may be saturating the optimal Vs efficiency of the cylinder.

The reason air boxes are often much better than pods is because they are drawing still air from inside the chamber that is far less turbulent than a pod. They also often draw in cooler air than what a pod can - do less dense too. This video is all conjecture without a dyno chart showing a tuned engine runs poorer on a stock air box.

I gotta disagree with you. I have never had any problems tuning weak setups with pod filters. In fact, my first own build had a pod filter and even without any experience and just by reading into the topic i had the setup up and running like a charme within a day. The main downside imo is that the fuel consumption is too bad for riding a pod filter on a commuter/daily.

Those who do as you did and stick with the long term tuning will be succesful in the outcome. Researching the topic and have the equipment to tune is what it is all about. The detail will have an effect on the success too, was it a used scooter, did it have low kms, did it have any underlying issues, was it stock to start? Well done👍
