The TRUTH About La Mer - Dermatologist Review

La Mer is one of the most popular (and expensive) skincare brands in the world, with a tub of moisturizer costing over $500. In this video, Dr. Syed goes through the La Mer website / ingredients and gives his brutally honest review of their products. He answers the question - is La Mer worth it?

    you should've so much more subs and views. As someone who has worked over 20 years in the high-end skincare industry...I can assure you it's ALL marketing. Not just La Mer, but all luxury brands. What they really sell is an "illusion" - most people think if it's expensive it's also more effective. To be fair, the majority customers buying these skincare products are wealthy and don't know where to spend their money, or they buy it just so everyone can see the jar in their bathroom. It's about prestige and showing of your money.

    Thank you for sharing this! I’ve also heard some people say that we should pay high for skincare so basically buy high end because it is “better quality” and that the ingredients that they use are very good as opposed to the drugstore. Is that really true? Or we still pay for the “brand” for priced skincare that exists?

  • @QManagerin

    @QManagerin

    Жыл бұрын

    @@kiranveerkaursidhu610 most drugstore skincare brands are produced by the same companies in the same facilities as the high-priced prestige brands, the ingredients only slightly vary. The higher price is mostly marketing, packing and of course you get bigger samples, have gifts for your costumers, free service etc. as you correctly said they often pick an ingredient they claim is special and patented but with no evidence behind it. Helena Rubinstein has "Edelweiss" stem cells, La Prairie uses caviar and gold whatever sounds expensive. I tried almost all of them (because I got them for free) and I can tell you, they're all just glorified moisturizers - the price is not justified. I personally use a retinoid and sunscreen...

    I am so grateful for the video you made being completely transparent about skincare - even though I knew the truth about it all, I still sort of fed into the marketing of certain brands. As you explained, the reality is that the majority of skins issues are solved by a very simple process. First, by addressing internal health (dehydration, hormonal imbalances, diet, alcohol, smoking/vaping, medications that impact skin appearance, etc) and then looking at external factors that impact skin health (intense exercise, current skin regime, weather, sun exposure, pollutants). From there, all the issues can be easily addressed using OTC skincare ingredients and medical grade products. No one needs to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on multiple products that do the exact same thing! I'm grateful I saw your video, because it serves as a very important message in our consumerism culture. I'm excited to see your future content! :)

    I heard that Creme de la Mer is amazingly similar to Nivea. And I must say I don't understand that a lot of high end brands still put their products in these kind of containers. I always go for a tube or a pump with my moisturizer to keep it fresh ( no air and no fingers in the product like in a jar ).

    Yeah, it's basically the classic Nivea creme (the one in navy tin) plus this algae extract. So, basically, if you get the Nivea tin plus some algae toner/essence/serum (e.g. Marine Hyaluronics from The Ordinary or Algae Toner by Whamisa - there are likely more, these two I can name from the top of my head) you get effectively the same thing but for 20-30€ every couple of months.

    No they aren’t similar. Their first ingredients are different. Nivea cream is not a facial moisturizer either. Now rich people don’t use this stuff. They are marketing for the company for little people to waste their money on a product that is just a nice moisturizer. You can get one just as nice at the drug store. But Nivea cream is water based as it’s the first ingredient on the label. La Mer’s first ingredient is algae. So not the same. Not one bit. And no, again, rich people don’t use La Mer. Most luxury high end things rich people do not buy or use. It’s ruse to get the rest of us to spend our money. Rich people have other means to get far better products than La Mer.

I took the jar back to Nordstrom where I bought it and got my money back. They weren’t happy but I insisted. I will never again fall for a “miracle” cream like that. And yes, that advertising is a load of garbage. Why do we enrich companies like that with our hard earned money? It makes me so angry.

So she went back to the ‘skincare consultant’ to complain, and they sold her another super expensive product to supposedly deal with this “rare but known issue”. 😂 Now what I want to ask you (but I suspect I already know the answer) is whether eye cream is just face cream in a teeny tiny container.

    The majority of its price is due to the exclusivity tied to them, I say. I heard the experience of purchasing their products used to be very boutique-like or something but then again this was often the case for many luxury products. Another thing I heard is that La Mer's sale in the west has decreased despite the overall increase in sales for La Mer and this is because most of the purchases was made in Asia, specifically in China. This is only something I heard but I say this sure explains the increase of exposure of celebrities using La Mer products in the past 3~5 years.

    I found your channel from this La Mer video. I used to only use drugstore stuff like Neutrogena and no-name genetic brands. But as I started to use KZread more, I started to see people using crazy expensive skincare products and it's almost like if you don't use it, you are not "with it" enough. I have worked in an environmental testing lab and in finance so the science and finance side of me see through the BS. But the imaginary/hopeful side of me wants to believe there is a magic broth or quick solution. I also found that there are a lot of 'get-rich-quick' videos/books/products on financial freedom. It's almost like the 'magic cream' for finance. I have worked with companies that give stock options (including NFT type of companies) and most of the time, stock options go to zero. the options will only be valuable if the company makes it. also in finance, you tend to get a taste of luxury settings (ie. people giving you invitation to VIP events and chocolate with gold flakes on it etc.) and you suddenly feel poor because I can't afford to do these things everyday yet I feel like I should aspire to it. it's exactly the La Mar lifestyle experience when you work in finance. and many of my high finance friends suffer from mental illness. I do agree that "passive" income is important. I also went to Imperial College London for a course (I started to follow you on LinkedIn - Stella P. Tsa is me). Thanks for your videos. I feel like my brain is suddenly more clear from your videos. Eventhough I have a MSc. Finance degree but I never aimed for the highest paying jobs in finance (private equity/investment banking) like my classmates with the same degree. I aimed for world-saving jobs like sustainable investing /endowment fund jobs that don't pay well. my next career step has to be something that pays the highest possible for my education, something I am good enough at and doesn't make me mentally/physically ill over the long-term.

    Great video. Someone watched my video on la mer and told me about your channel. I totally agree with your conclusion. I do like fermented skin care and you can purchase kelp bioferment (fermented seaweed just like la mer) and pair it with an inexpensive moisturizer like Nivea(which actually has a lot of the same moisturizing ingredients as as la mer) all for a fraction of the price.

I’m also a NY’er (Queens)! I think having the knowledge I had, free from social media, played a roll in why I’m usually taken for 20+ years younger. Western skincare was just… lacking something. I always had great skin, but I wanted it to stay that way! And thankfully, it did! But I had to turn to Traditional Chinese Medicine, and other healthy practices, like staying hydrated for example. No fancy face cream or procedures. ANYWAY! Tks for sharing your knowledge, experience, and personality. PS I must be the anomaly! My skincare vids hardly get views! (As opposed to my hair vids). Maybe I should use those vague terms like on the Mer commercial 😂
