I first moved to India from Germany to work for a year at a Uni as a language teacher and while preparing I somewhere read that plastic bags are banned (which is why i took 3 huge rolls of trash bags with me) and that you often don't get cuttlery which is why i brought a spork with me wherever i went... like a fricking idiot XD Well, now I've been living in India for all together 5 years and since i am living in Mumbai I literally never miss anything. We get all kinds of food here from all over the world, you can go to fancy fine dine places or to kickass vada pav stalls on the street, you can shop at cheap indian markets as well as fancy malls. We've got a national park to take a breather in nature. Green places like Alibhaug or Lonavla are not far for weekend getaways. You get to see all international movies cause there is a shitload of movie theatres. You get all kinds of art exhibitions, museums and cultural festivals. I can confidently be out even late at night, even as a woman. there is literally nothing I miss here in regards to comfort and lifestyle. The only thing I'm occasionally missing is my folks at home (obviously) but that's it. Did I see people shitting on the street, well yeah, driving by a slum, cause these often don't have toilets (the municipalities though are trying to keep up with building public toilets for them, problem is people keep moving in from the rural areas in search for labor so new 'settlements' keep popping up randomly many places), but frankly, I saw a big fine pile of human shit when accidently getting off the train at Jamaica station in New York, and lets not even talk about all the human shit piles on the street that I barely evaded in LA and SF, so... Imagine I'd be running around after that telling everyone folks in USA shit in the street everywhere. Lol. As for sexual assaults, it happened to me once late at night in a quite deserted part of town when I couldn't get a cab to take me home. An obviously drugged (eyes like a squirrel) plastic bottle collector grabbed my ass and followed me. Guess what, I went to a security guard of a house, asked for help and the good man shooed that guy away and escorted me to the gate of my hotel, asking nothing more but for me to be sure to have some restaurant call a cab for me the next time rather than trying to walk home through a deserted area and to take care. Of course sexual assault occur. Look at the sheer population of this country, obviously a certain percentage are bound to be jerks/criminals, but not more than anywhere else (just speaking from my personal experience of staying in 4 different continents in 7 different countries). I think often foreign visitors are not aware or capable of how to tell if a situation is turning shady or not (like me back then) or they don't understand that certain behaviors (handing out your phone number, getting too touchy/smiley with people you just met etc) may be misinterpreted. And yes, you might also encounter a straightup jerk. But you know what? Don't stay quiet. Throw a ruckus. Chances are (at least in Mumbai) random people will jump to your aid and beat that guy up or at least help you drag them to the police. And PLEASE PLEASE, if something like this happens to you, DO GO TO THE POLICE! Way too many foreigners who run into something like this write a blog post and give a few interviews so some news get a media scoop but refuse to help the police catch that guy. At least in Mumbai I can assure you people do care for their city's image and they will do what they can to make sure that guy doesn't do it to another person. Living here I found the vast majority of Indians nothing but welcoming, friendly, helpful and positively curious. And that's not only my impression of Mumbai btw. but of most of the wonderful places I visited here (Pune, Ahmedabad, Indore, Jhodpur, Jaipur, Pushkar, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pondycherry and Mahabalipuram) Thank you, India, for making me feel so much at home here! And thank you for this wonderful take on India and for clearing up some misconceptions. Keep it up!

Before going to India, I kind of imagined this really distant, strange, unwelcoming, dangerous and scary country, mostly due to what people had been telling me recently and basically, all of my life. But the minute I stepped off the plane in Delhi, the second I walked out of the airport, it felt like home. Everyone had been wrong, at least from my experience, because this is the most welcoming, beautiful, diverse and special country I've been to. Even now, people almost praise me for having lived 3 months in India, like it's the most challenging thing in the world but honestly, these were the easiest and happiest days of my life. Travelling India felt like coming home.

I travelled all over India for 4 months and not once did I face that BS water bottle scam. In fact once I stayed in a cheap guest house in Delhi and it was late night and I asked the staff where i can find bottled water at that time. They offered me water bottle and told me before hand the seal is broken because they use arrow (filtered) water. Drank it and was perfectly fine. Saved my wallet alot drinking arrow water everywhere I went. Really only drank bottled sealed water on trains and busses. Most of the people in India are extremely honest and helpful. I also fell madly in love with India and can't wait to go back again

I have been living in India for 3 years and I can tell you that the water bottle scam is very real along with many other scams. Yes there are some beautiful places and people in India, but there is also some very bad places and people just like any country.but my advice to foreigners is that if you go to Delhi or tourist places than you better be ready to be harassed by every one wanting money or to sell you something.and places like Delhi are full of trash and sewage unless you stay in the more rich areas. There are some really awesome places in India that I love, it's just sad that alot of people including the government are letting those places be destroyed for profit and because people don't care enough about the land

Thanks for your honest review about India. I've lived in the US and Europe too and I know every country has it's bad and good.. I've seen it all. Yea we have many issue like muslims. They are doing damage in every possible way. Stay away from them. Once u know hinduism you know what the world is all about. Just follow it's core teaching no need to convert it. Becoz once u converted muslim and Christian will hate u. Renaming is not a hindu idea after changing belief system it is pure western ideology just to destroy his old identity. You can be hindu after all by following your own identity. Hinduism is about experiencing the the whole cosmos as one entity and it has more deeper meaning .. word is not enough for this.. Happy life god bless you.

I've been to India about 20 times now sometimes twice a year for about 1 month+ each time and mainly rural India. It's a fantastic place. The best advice I can give is to learn a few Hindi phrases, smile and say hello (Nameste) to people you meet and deal with. Be polite and open to new experiences. Indians are proud of their country and it's extensive history and are generally happy to explain aspects of it. Street food is fantastic and particularly safe if you see it deep fried, like samosas. On the road try and eat where the truckers do they go for safe tasty food. India still has retail price maintenance and commodities will have the price printed on the packaging by the manufacturer. Traveling by train. There is generally a quota of seats reserved for tourist on the longer distance trains. Some journeys can take a long time Delhi to Pune was 27Hrs. Delhi to Sikim was nearly 3 whole days but really cheap by western standards. AC 2 class gets a comfortable sleeper berth with a coach attendant who will organize hot meals to be delivered at various stops. Taxis/AutoRickshaws Most cities require these to have meters, insist on them being used. If no meter negotiate a price before embarking. Above all. Relish the change of culture and pace of life the later of which doesn't run on standard time but Indian Flexible Time.

+Chris Craven hello,i agree with all of your points but the trucker and food one. iam a indian and i wouldn't suggest eating street food or in hotels with the truckers(iam not badmouthing them) from my observation they go for cheap and strong food often accompanied by alcohol. when i was younger me and my dad went to eat in a place which is kind of trucker's food place my dad drives a fire vehicles himself(avg sized man and not as heavily built as a lorry driver) guess what we couldn't eat half of what a trucker does and the taste/cleanliness is so so .i would suggest eating street food where employees(techies merchants etc) eat that most probably taste's good(techies dont chow down as much as truckers so they prefer taste over quantity) or just ask a local person for places. well that is as far as my experience goes i dont know the trucker habits in other parts of india(i live in southern part) i think you can take my advice when you are travelling in southern parts of india.good day to you

Valid point, but as I said I've mostly been in rural India where there aren't that many techies. Not been down south so can't comment on the food there. Most of my visits were to the north where the food didn't seem that spicy hot, just spicy delicious.

India is so diverse country but still it shows the example of unity in diversity. India is the largest democracy and a polite country , which attack for defence of it and don't attack on another countries still they harm it ,Our country is culturally diverse but so beautiful, it's the fastest growing economy and teaches many things to other countries it says that ‘atithi devo bhava h' . So, I think every country is unique and respectful in its own way and also no any outsider can say our country bad . Moreover Britishers ruled over the whole world , they robbed out many rich countries like India, so India is still developing and working on its weakness and it's also improving gradually Jai Bharat Jai Hind🇮🇳🇮🇳

I think I've been ripped off more living in London than on any of my travels or even whilst living in the US. The one time I got robbed I honestly think it was one of my fellow travellers. Generally I find people very friendly and helpful where ever I travel but especially in India to the point of a bit OTT at times. Regards sexual harassment I've had the odd elbow in the breast ?? but the only time I was definitely touched inappropriately was in a train in Morocco - I just stamped on his foot and walked off! I think if something like that happens to you you need to react robustly and/or report it. To be fair most of my travels in India have been with a group but the few times I have travelled there on my own I did not have a problem. The one thing that makes me a bit sad about India is the creeping westernisation and obsession with money/things. On my last trip in 2017 (on the Manali to Leh highway) our lovely Indian driver was telling us how a lot of the gurus are becoming movie stars or rich business men. Modernisation is one thing but too much westernisation not good. Don't lose your spirituality India - its what makes you special

Janet Bray I would appreciate if there was awareness in people to call it Sanatan Sanskriti or Vedic Dharma. Sanatan Sanskriti is repository of knowledge with human evolution. This evolved with the time and yug (kaal). 1. The place between Himalaya in north to indu sarovar (Indian ocean) is called Hindu. Himalya Hi and Indu. Makes the word Hindu. Used for geographic demarcation. Hindu kush mountain Hindu river called as Sindhu river all indicated the sanskrit origin of the word. But yes doesn't indicate religion but Geographic. Hindustan is a pure sanskrit origin word. Read the puran. The muslim invaders tried to demean the word Hindu with many bad words to show them down and paint them as bad people. This is how racist jokes are created. 2. Since Dharma evolved and led humans from darkness to light from ignorance to knowledge. "tamso ma jyotirgamaya". There was no other religion to compete So there is no name, no rules for bashing other religion and concept of conversion. You can't bash criticize or compete non existent. 3. This is why got more than 1400 books scriptures on various topics helpful in material and spiritual life and this knowledge evolved with time. 4. Ayurvda, Medicine, Vyakrna, Natyashashtra, state crafts, yagya hawan ritual, philosophy, astrology, Jyotish, poetics, sangita shastra, yoga, Veda,Vedanta, Puran, Mimansa architecture mathematics to name a few. Books are available on every aspect of human brain can imagine in such a detail that only one book Mahabharat contains one lakh shlokas. 5. In short Dharma is celebration of the diversity of Human knowledge. 6. We as a layman only know about Dharma as a blind man knows about elephant after holding the tail of the elephant. 7. Most of us are only able to know what we see on daily basis like nature and creation worship. And on the basis of this we criticize and appreciate dharma. But Dharma criticize none. Dharma don't give scope for criticism but enlightenment and seeking truth . 8. There is so much more to know. Since I am born in a Dharma followers family. Therefore I celebrate the diversity of human thoughts with ease. Dose not mean i know everything. But once you will know Dharma out of the set criteria of Abrahamic religion for Dharma. You will find nothing to criticize like a blind man holding an elephant tail and saying why he is made to hold a snake. Instead of criticism You will question and seek answers. 9. For example when you see a survivor on discovery eating dead animal poo and pee either you appreciate or criticize this. But no one can deny that this human will survive the odd. And Dharma have a complete set of philosophy and practicing sect called aghori. However a few. To make sure that the human will survive the extreme. Human will not die out because of the certain dogmas made by the so called civilized society or religion. Dharma supports all accommodates all. 10. Religion ends at heaven and hell only but the Dharma gives to strive even beyond this. That's Moksha complete liberation. 11. If someone adopts Sanatan dharma way of life. He automatically fits into the either Varna Vyavstha Brahman Kshatriya Vaishya Shudra according to profession or Ashram Vyavstha Brahmacharya Grihasth Vanprasth and Sanyas. Together its called Varnashram Vyavstha for the benefit of the society. I can enlighten you on this vedic Varnashram vayvstha. Mail me Varna division start from us. Our head is our brahma to control our shoulders are our kshatriya to protect us our stomach is our vysya to feed us and our foot are our shudra to serve us. Another term division of profession. Which exists all over the world in different forms. And this is most scientific division of profession to avoid conflict in society. This Varna can be achieved by your Karma. To fit into Ashram one has nothing to do. Fits in naturally and can stay in any of the phase as long as he wants. Now it depends on us that we respect equally to our teacher and our toilet cleaner. Which Dharma clearly says respect each and every thing. This is why worship for all not only to teachers. So if you respect your teacher and toilet cleaner equally you are a great Dharmik person. Now where you see fault in this varna system. Lots of Rishi were not born in cast Brahman but respected worshipped. For details you mail me. Cast seems a tribal identity with all the evils of Ego and depends totally an individual local social environment no support from Dharma 12. Sanatan Dharma allow an individual to seek truth, follow a path or make his her own path to reach the goal of 'Brahma" the energy and consciousness of the Universe. The feeling of अहं ब्रह्मास्मी, I am the consciousness makes one enlighten and तत् त्वमसी, so are you makes you a Guru. This is the reason encouraged many enlightened soul to find and make their own path. Thus Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism, sant parampra like Kabir, Ravidas etc were born without any conflict. Dharma allowed them to propagate and flourish 13. Comparing Dharma with one book one prophet religion is not a good idea. Can only increase ignorance. Because books of mazhab are small simple and for that for the followers of that particular mazhab only. So better study the world's oldest surviving civilization based on Dharma with universal application, yourself. अहं बर्हमासमी l तत त्वं असी. सर्वे जना:सुखिनो भवन्तु. सर्वे सन्तु निराम्या:l वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम l
