The truth about Blackmagic Design Gen 5 Color Science

Фильм және анимация

What's changed and what hasn't? Is there any benefit to Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K & 6K users switching to Gen 5 color science? And what's up with the Ursa Mini Pro 12K?

    Perfect! I needed that for my reds. I shoot events, so the DJ lights always get me, even if just reflecting off of skin.

    Thank you for the great comparison! I'm interested to see how this new color science translates to the Ursa 12K, but as I won't be able to afford one for a while it's much more useful to see how it affects the Pocket cameras. I've always hated the greens of the Pocket lineup, but luckily you can (mostly) address that in post as you showed.

    Consider updating this video now that Gen 5 color is available for the Pocket cameras. I just updated my 6K and did a quick "Ryobi" test. It's fine with DaVinci YRGB Color Managed. The Ryobi color looked normal with no special adjustments.

    Hi, I actually just bought your PocketLUT Version 3 yesterday. I like them very much, but I'm a little confused. In this video you say, that there would be two distinctive version, one for gen4 and one for gen5. I'm not sure, but I can't find the gen5 version in the package. What am I missing?

    I really wish I knew. I understand why Canon pushes orange/red for pleasing skintones. I can even understand why Sony pushes the cooler colors as is a preferred in Japan, but I just don't see a rationale for why Blackmagic Design color space isn't accurate. These are the people who make Resolve!

    I had people aggressively disagree with me saying LOG is irrelevant with RAW footage, since you can just add it in post. But then my question is, if this is true why do all manufacturers create a log profile with their RAW cameras?

  • @Humcrush

    @Humcrush

    3 жыл бұрын

    Interestingly, with Gen5, you can actually bypass the log conversion and go straight from the linear raw data to a REC709 gamma. You do this by choosing REC709 in the RAW tab. When you do, notice how all of the rest of the RAW controls disable? This is because the conversion is being done directly in the BRAW SDK from the raw sensor data.Theoretically, one less conversion means less conversion errors.

    I understand you are trying to sell your LUT that look great by the way.. But you do know that the Black Magic Design 12K sensor is completely redesigned. Its a RGB W sensor ... They have kept it under wraps the exact pattern but its even # RGB and then they add White or clear pixels to the pattern. For example #s off top of my head.. lets say its like 36 block pattern where it 10red 10blue 10 green pixels so 30 pixels and then 6 added white or clear pixels.. White distributed or clear distributed some way. Its TOP SECRET proprietary sensor which they are HUSH about.. So when they develop a color science for Example Color Science 5 or w/e they call it.. That is DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY for the NEW SENSOR.. It is not intended to be used on older model cameras... U can test and do w/e but you have no idea what the new color science is like b/c you don't have the 12k camera yet.. It its not a bayer pattern so its something new and different and no anti aliasing so that's a big deal.. Samples look great on $20K glass but how does 12k resolve on a Xeen prime lens or a cn e prime 35.. Does it resolve and look great on a sigma 18-35mm... But as for comparing it to #4 its pointless b/c its not design for older cameras...

  • @Humcrush

    Hey Adam, while you are correct about the new sensor using new tech, you are not correct about Gen5 only being for it. The differences in sensors are baked into the BRAW file when recorded, not the "color science" that is applied after the fact. *Per Blackmagic Design*, two of the key features of Gen5 are to 1) provide a unified log curve and 2) better map super-saturated, out-of-gamma colors like those from LED or neon lights. Per BMD, Gen5 does not change primaries, and as such is compatible with all modern BMD cameras. If you're curious about learning more, I suggest you check-out the discussions on BMD's forum. Also, 12K sample footage is in the wild, so I have been able to test against it.

    They say it has a better highlight roll off, what we can't see on your studio shot.

  • @Humcrush

    @Humcrush

    3 жыл бұрын

    The Gen4 log curve already comfortably holds all of the highlight detail that the P4K, P6K, Ursa Mini 4.6K, etc. can capture. When you say "roll-off", what you really mean is artifically compressing the highlights into a safe range. How one fits what the camera has recorded into a given safe range (like SDR/Rec709 or HDR/2020) is "roll-off", and that's just a matter or adjusting to taste. BM Video cuts off out of range highlights, BM Extended compresses them a little. My Pocket709+ compresses them a little more. There is no right or wrong or "better".

  • @Humcrush

    @Humcrush

    2 жыл бұрын

    Then truthfully - and I'm not saying this to be snarky - you're grading wrong. Because if you use a technical transform to get your footage into the correct output space (LUT, CST or Resolve Color Management) then they are equally easy to grade. Your job as a colorist to is make creative decisions, not to try to replicate a mathematical equation.
