This reminds me of how Panavison has been with film it took a long time to go digital and they still outsourced the sensor to Red but when it came to film especially35mm they were the go-to place because you knew the camera worked it was reliable and you image was going to be superior. You get what you pay for some times old tech is the best tech.

The image on film was not dependent on the camera, that's what the stock is for, and that's the kingdom of Kodak and Fujifilm But just like in digital you have the top line being Arri, RED, and Sony, in film you'd see pretty much all Panavision, Arri and Aaton cameras

@@thedave7760 No they don't, the same 35mm film stock runs through the most recent film cameras all the way back to the very olderst ones. The look comes from the lenses, and the film stock. In the era of film you didn't pick a camera for it's look, you picked it for it's useability and reliability. To use Panavision lenses you sort of have to go to Panavision but they're a rental house. I don't know if they have any Arri film cameras but they'll rent you an Arri Alexa.

Man, as a photographer I STILL to this day rock 2 different Fuji XT-1s, one in my kit for big work, and one I just throw in my jeep and treat like the rest of the tools and junk just in case I see something pretty. I love Fuji for their color tech, that's about it for me. The XT-4 I got just to get something more modern in their line. But it's their simplicity to just say "we make good heavy feeling cameras with really pretty colors" that keeps me grabbing for them. I have never had a time were I've held an event and thought "ya know what'd make these pictures better? Some cutting edge tech Nikon kit that'd cost more than a new Cummins" 9 times out of 10 I'm looking for new lenses. If not I'm checking out different programs or editing tricks to get what I want. Simplicity and the will to hold onto solid values of what makes a good camera good is what makes a good camera company a good camera company every time. Everything else is just superfluous gossip over features - that to be fair might be what you NEED to make you're company flow the way you need to help the way you want, but are just that, features. Good cameras are not built to be cutting edge, they built to be good cameras.

Arri basically gets their priorities right in terms of what a cine cam should be and is not pressured by market forces due to their industry leading product, which most consumer camera manufacturer cant do since they have to deal with a lot of competition. I'd like to see more competition in the cinema camera industry, maybe RED and Panavision can team up and make the ultimate cinema camera with high resolution and dynamic range. They could but some of it is a business decision too. They have to sell more cameras and keep up with everyone around them. ARRI never has really had to ever rush production on anything. You could blame the consumer market on that or look at it from a other non ARRI companies push camera tech where it's never been before. Even if it isn't a good camera, was it still worth it because it progresses tech further?

I’m a 50 years old movies lover from Italy and last week I finally took home an old ARRI ALEXA CLASSIC. It’s a 5200 hours ex-rental camera, totally serviced by ARRI at Munich last year, and with many accessories. It records only 2K, is cumbersome, is heavy, built and colored like a war tank. But I just don’t care… After owning BLACKMAGIC, CANON and SONY, this was my dream. And is finally a reality. The next step is to find an old external ARRIRAW recorder like CODEX or CONVERGENT DESIGN. But I’m in no hurry. Cheers from Italy.

Arri never claimed 14 stops. They claimed 14+ stops. This is because Arri's 14 (and a bit) stops is actually useable. RED's claims of 16.5 are real. But you lose a a lot since those are in noise regions. In short, RED is actually more accurate in their description from a scientific standpoint while Arri will tell you what you can expect in a final image. Big difference. Neither is wrong.

Despite the 2k res, it damn near feels like I'm coloring film when I work with it. Noiseless. Buttery soft and sharp simultaneously. literally could have thrown a film conversion lut onto it and would have been happy with the grade. I did had for 2 years loan a Guarneri Violine insured 1 Million € it was very nice but I did come back to an Modern Instrument which for me was better and I could even buy it... let be honest if you make videos for leaving even partially it is a job like another... By the way more I work with one camera less I want to change...(and still in love with BMPCC4K)...still hunting for a camera with better resolution and better or some kid of AF...GH6 maybe for the price here...I am invested in MFT so logical choice...and still somehow I don't like the FF look...but GH6 for 2000 vs used BMPCC6K for 1100???that s a good question...Arri is for me like the Porsche 911 would love to drive but I finished with 20year VW Jetta so kind of GH5 😂😂

In case the camera gets dropped or stolen and that happens all the time, it is not your problem. You simply rent another one for your next project. You can't buy Panavision or IMAX. If you want to own a camera get a T3i with Magic Lantern or a BMPCC4K. Or if you have too much money a Sony Alpha. Do your homework with that and if you teally have to, rent an Alexa Mini for your actual shoot. However, in filmmaking it is more important what is in front of the lens than what is behind it. Fimmaking is about painting with light, not about cool cameras. Leonardo DaVinci did the outline for the Mona Lisa with a piece of charcoal for 5 cents.

You have a new subscriber, and by the quality of this video, it looks like I will become also a member pretty soon 😎 I have (what feels like) a very stupid question: Are all movies filmed with ARRI cameras upscaled to 4K? Haven-t we got to a point where simulated picture grain is being so overused that it makes bigger resolutions pointless? Upscaling AI technology is getting so good, and improving so fast, that might catch up faster than inconvenient stupidly high resolutions, and could become the go-to option (for series/movies and everything cinematic). If that's the case, ARRI backing off from the 4K camera release is a MASTER MOVE. I can see Studios in a few years doing what is commonly done in recording / mixing / mastering studios: They bounce the mix master bus, or even the song 2 track master, to real 2-track analog tape, and then back to digital, to get a real warm and analog feel, instead of using digitally modeled Tape FX. That means the con back to digital conversion can be done at the highest possible resolution and sample rate settings, regardless of the ones used prior to the DA conversion (On tracks, mixing, & mastering) I can easily see the Movie Industry sticking to ARRI's 2K cameras for years to come. And them, a final Digital to Film reel transfer + back again to Digital (they can scan it back in 16K if they want!!) would be a nice last touch + No fake grain involved in the process. But I'm just thinking out loud. I could be totally wrong for what I know 😅 I'm no expert...

Hey! Appreciate the subscribe! As far as upscaling to 4k. I believe that happens sometimes and other times movies aren't in 4k resolution. I think a lot of time on TV they are but at theatres it's a bit different. But at the end of the day, lower resolution can look just as good as higher resolution depending on how it was filmed. Higher the bitrate, higher the image quality. But tbh, ARRI footage just looks good and really their attention to fine tuning their codecs is what is great!

Your point about printing digital footage onto film is something that's already happening in the industry! This process is called a "film out" where its exactly as you described. Printing the footage onto the film of your choice (and budget) then scanning that back as digital

I think there is a potentially another element of this to consider. Arri (not unlike Sony with the Venice Camera) set out to make cinema cameras for cinema crews, ones that were already working with film cameras at the time. And you're right they took a no compromise approach to the sensor design to gain a close to if not better filmic image with film like dynamic range. It meant, at the time, brute forcing the digital to analog converters (by including two of them) and reading back the sensor data twice, at different gain settings. Even today Sony doesn't feel the need to do this, and instead prioritized low noise pre amps and dual gain, vs combining each signal path like Arri. BUT, and this is a big BUT. Arri, like the Venice, was designed for crews! Sure it beats the RED in dynamic range and reliability, but it also beat red in the physical workflow with crews. It had power distribution for follow focus motors, it had room on the body to put accessories, room for multiple ac's to work, proper balance support. And it would withstand similar temperature ranges like their tried and true film cameras (good luck having a reliable RED camera experience in 100F). So I think it's really the combination of factors that led to their dominance. There were a number of digital style cinema cameras in the past that pushed the limits of image quality and dynamic range, but only Arri combined that with amazing ergonomics for crews (not single operators), amazing durability and a true on set workflow. Oh, and one more thing! Arri's sensor still, to this day, scans faster than most cameras out there (besides global shutter sensors). It's 2ms-4ms response time, decimates the competition. And they use that scan time, even at 24fps. I think this is an element of the secret sauce for Arri cameras. It's not just the dynamic range, but it's also the motion cadence. They way motion blur renders on an alexa is just subtly different when compared to RED or Sony. And, if I'm honest, that secret sauce might have more impact than you can imagine.

@@FrameVoyager If you did an entire video analyzing rolling shutter and it's impact in motion cadence, I'd watch it!! Lol, but totally great content. I think a fair followup could be the obligatory "wtf are cinema cameras so big/different than everything else" etc etc. I think it's a story not told enough, that to work with a team on set you just need that little more kit, power, room to rig and work, and small cameras just make that a real pain in the butt.
