    Just to clarify for any viewers who are confused - the gear he uses is digital, NOT analog. Some have an analog filter built in but that's about it. The key word is "standalone" and that's what the discussion is centered around. Analog vs digital gear is a whole other topic.

    He is right. Although the term “Analog Gear” can be used to describe things like that. But Standalone is the correct term for that. (I always stick to Logic Pro though)

    I just say outboard gear, but i think every producer should have one or two actual analog synths, we're modern so buying 50 hardware synths is a waste of cash. But analog synths do have a heft that digital cannot recreate. One decent analog polysynth is enough for a modern producer.

    I come from playing guitar for 17 years before getting into music production. I have find that working on hardware or a midi controller gives me that instrument feeling that I’m use too. I’m glad that I learned music theory so it makes it easier to come up with good music but I’m still learning how to get a great sound from my setup. Good video.

    I realized I only had 2 audio inputs on the mpc live 2 but I have a Fantom-06 and a Sonic Cell sound module so I got a work around where I plug the midi/audio cables into the fantom and have the fantom into the mpc and now I can use sounds off the fantom & the sonic cell and switch back and forth and combine the 2 together and make layers with the 16 channels in the fantom. No unplugging or anything when I want to switch between the 2. I hope that helps somebody. Maybe that’s not news to you but also kinda new to hardware.

    You also want to look into a mid size mixer with direct outs on every chanel. You can balance the beat as you make it. Also for new keyboards with out multi outs outside of usb ASIO for all and aggregated on MAC is the business. You can record in one pass

    By the by, the original Fantoms that are upgraded to the EX are just like the new EX boards. If you clear your license and pull all the sounds out of the board to sell it, the person that buys your board will get all the EX stuff. All they need to do is get a Roland Cloud account and download all the models / sounds / libraries that come with the EX board. Upgrading to EX is a permanent thing. Your keyboard can’t revert back to the original Fantom OS. There seems to be a lot of confusion over this so wanted to clarify.

    When you said "analog" gear, I thought you were going to primarily focus on analog processing gear, like analog tube preamps, compressors, and eqs to beef up your sound before it hits the interface, or a master bus compressor to send your final mix into before hitting the 2-track recorder (or sending it back into the DAW for a final mixdown). Well, you did kinda touch on it a bit with the Manley Force preamp and also, although you didn't mention it, the photo of your rack with the Avalon VT737 dual channel mic preamp/compressor/eq that is sitting right above your UAD Apollo interface. This is key right here to taking your sound to the next level. However, I'm glad you did touch basis on high-end interfaces because converters are VERY important when tracking in from an analog signal path. Unfortunately, I can't afford a lot of the analog signal processing gear (Neve, Manley, UAD, Avalon, etc....). Let's face it. That sh*t is very expensive. Hopefully, I will eventually make the income where I will be able to afford it one day. With that said, I do have some really nice sounding high-end analog hardware synthesizers and drum machines as well as some digital hardware to offset that. So, at least my sound sources are good to start off with. So yeah, I could have bought some high-end processors with the money I spent on those synths because hardware synths are just as expensive. However, I feel like good quality sound first starts at the source (which is the actual instrument itself). Then, once you process that later with a high-end analog signal chain, it will sound even better.

  • @Chyuuch
    @ChyuuchАй бұрын

    The most important thing to mention about owning analog gear is, somedays that shit just aint gone work right. Those analog synths will pop out of tune and refuse to get there. Maybe the temperature in the room shifted, that can cause em to act funny. Sometimes you never quite figure out what was wrong. But just know, the more stuff you get, the more likely you end up with a temperamental machine on any given day. And get a paint brush to know the dust off your machines. new phantom 06 coming in tommorow. Wanted the big boy but the way my pocket & plaques set up...smdh 😂

    5:30 Yes, TRS balanced cables already have noise rejection built into the topology. You can only take advantage of balanced cables if their XLR or TRS. TR is not balanced and is in theory more susceptible to noise. So Yes, you in theory should be able to get mid-tier TRS cables that perform well. Just make sure the build quality is up to snuff. if the cable is set it up once and for get it, mid tier should be fine. if it's a cable that gets plug & unplugged frequently like a patch cable, you want a higher build quality TRS cable. just my 2 cents...

  • @legacyShredder1

    @legacyShredder1

    Ай бұрын

    Make sure that the XLR and TRS metal type is the same for the cable connectors and the insert jack they're connected to. As long as they are the same metal they will never corrode or tarnish when plugged in. If two different metal types are being used they will corrode over time which will create noise, interference, and eventually stops signal transfer until the corrosion is removed from inside the jack and the cable. (If the interface jack insert is nickel, use nickel TRS/XLR cable ends. If the insert is gold, use gold cable ends.) This way you can plug up the system once and leave it forever without ever having problems with the cable or insert jacks.

    Back in 92' I bought a Roland D10 from a Pawn shop in Fayetteville NC. The sounds in it were not a standard library. I've searched for decades but never found any sounds with the same tones. I also have an Alesis Data Disk so I bulk dumped all the sounds as a copy to a few 3.5s. The D10 eventually quit in 2003. But I got a replacement in 2021. I bulk loaded the disks into it and like long ago...all the original sounds were back on deck. My 3.5s are from the 90s but still worked. Even my MMT8 sequences were still read/playback ready. No matter how much I upgrade, certain gear I keep on hand for that just in case moment.

    correct terminolgy matters when teaching others. All the gear mentioned in the overview section that you own and use is digital, as Typistmusic points out yeah , the fantom has AN analog filter in it, but it is not an analog synth. If you call something analog you generally are refering to the actual signal flow so VCO, VCF, VCA should be analog components not digital creations of those components. There are specific issues that relate to working with analog outboard gear vs digital outboard gear. This is kinda like the "converters" debacle (where the term converters is being used to discuss an issue that isn't really related to the convert chips). As far as Gold plated cables there is a good case to be made for why to use them and its generally not audio quality, gold resists oxidation so generally they will last longer without needing cleaning. (just don't buy expensive cables promising "sealed pure blah blah blah") a coat hanger will work as good as an expensive cable its just a matter of build quality for longer lasting cables. other than that I agree with the points in regards to keeping your gear clean and well maintained and knowing its gonna take some time and effort to properly use outboard gear.

From my personal experience especially since i use older gear i would tell someone new to hardware to have plenty of patience, i had to do a workaround to get the windows drivers to work for my fantom xr i couldn't use it with the mpc software till i got that situated

    The biggest thing to mention about working with analog gear is gear envy. You will always want to try the latest and greatest.... which will destroy your budget. And if you want to be able to use all your gear you better learn how to use a patchbay. That being said. if you are smart and do your research you will realize you don't have to buy the top tier equipment to get the same result. Once you start comparing analog to digital you will hear the difference in quality... especially with compressors and sounds, from synths. The secret is using analog for tracking and then you can use digital for mixing... It is more important to have the best quality source going into computer. The biggest down side of an analog or hybrid set up.... is spending money on things that you think doesn't help you make music but is absolutely necessary to make music.... for example, patchbays, switches, power conditioners, DI boxes, battery backup, Monitoring unit, cables cables, cables, recall for analog gear on a track you already mixed (this is why choosing your gear wisely matters).

I don’t know how old It is because I found it in my other house with no strings and messed up. I may get that guitar fixed up soon. (I only know Bass though not guitar) Last but not least I use a Yamaha keyboard from 2005 as a midi controller that only has traditional midi connectors. Now thankfully my volt interface has 5-pin midi so I can hook it up there and play. As far as cables: Get balanced. Period. Most gear has balanced outputs and damn near every mixer have balanced inputs. Yes, there will be a situation when the gear doesn’t have a balanced output so I keep a few unbalanced cables for them but really, for the most part, just buy balanced cables. The science: a balanced cable has an extra wire inside that has an inverted phase. When the signal reaches the mixer, the mixer takes the straight signal and the inverted signal and removes anything that doesn’t match (removed noise and hum). Just buy balanced cables and save yourself the headache. Stay rocking’! 💪🏽🤘🏽

    When going from in the box production to standalone you will def be shown if you have any real musicianship lol Like you said if you have no music theory knowledge its gonna take a lot of time all most like starting back at day one. I think that's a big part of why the industry has a lot of like sounding beats. People are dependent on the computer to have the theroy and them directing rather than knowing along with loops being massively avaliable now. I know you remember when it was either you knew someone and collabed or you were crate digging. Always a great thing to go back to the basics and try and get back to the things that once made music great!! Just my take.

    Standalone stems is never coming, at least not like it works on Beats. The standalone device is simply not powerful enough, it takes forever just to do timestretching on its iPhone 6 tier CPU/RAM. There’s no way advanced AI processing will be possible unless you want to wait an hour for one layer. Maybe if some new higher end MPC device comes out and comes with some expensive AI chip and tons of CPU then it’s plausible. But I’m still skeptical it’s going to be any time soon

    Scientifically gold is a better conductor than the other metals. The Mogami argument that you don't need them is a money issue not a quality and if your cable is beyond a certain length you will wish you had them. It cost to be the boss and you have to pay to play. Analog is still better than 1's and 0's so save up and get them. You use an analog preamp, why not just use the UAD plugin preamp??? It's just as good correct?

    Just my two cents on "analog" in the larger context of stand-alone/outboard gear. One-knob per function, analog gear is a bliss to operate because what you touch and see is what you get. But most analog gear do not have preset recall. This is particularly annoying on knob-ladden synths. Some manufacturers tried to combine recall functions with motorised faders and 🎛️, but it's to fragile. Endless encoders with LEDs around are a solution, not so much linear (i.e. non-endless) ones, because you must catch-up wkth the actual value before moving or experience a sudden step change. And that doesn't sound analog at all even though the gear might be analog or oartly analog. A VST where you can't touch anything but where WYSIWYG can be less frustrating is some respect. Recently bought an analog synth that sounds so good. But once I found that moogy bass goodness, I simply did not want to change a thing on the panel and patch points (although I took a picture of it). The idea I could lost that moment forever did not sit right with me. Maybe I'm not an "analog person" after all. Sound wise, it's getting very difficult to hear a difference between a good emulation and an actual analog machine. Monarch or Moog's Mariana or just any Arturia from the V-collection is so close to the originals. It completely disappears in a mix, and If you play live, there's no way the most decent P.A. system from the greatest venues is going to do justice to your true analog sound. I play Virtual-ana!og sounds live (Roland's ACB, Zencore and Supernatural VA models), and wirh the right bit of EQ, it does the job so well...
