I went through BMT in 1980. Ended up serving for 24 years until my retirement in 2004. Based on this video, you both make me proud that we still have such high quality, great people serving in the USAF. Nicely done!

Retired NCO here. I know, I KNOW what you all feel or will feel. At some point in BMT you're going to hit what scifi author Robert A Heinlein called "The Wall". It might be physical, emotional, or academic. The Wall is that point when you aren't sure if you can go on, you aren't sure if you can make it. YOU CAN. Do what your MTI's say. DON'T just do enough to get by, do it right. Although you may feel the TI's hate you, (spoiler alert) YOU as an individual don't count. I know, harsh, right? So, they don't hate you, you don't count. You now belong to something greater than yourself. In fact, this is just the beginning. Wait until you graduate tech school and get on a team, admin, aircraft maintenance, avionics, Security Forces, etc. THEN you'll realize how big this thing is you've gotten into. BMT is a well planned military operation. We (the US) don't plan military ops to fail. We want you to succeed. You think your TI hates you, your TI WANTS you to succeed... but by the rules. Finally, I'm going to tell you this, but you won't "get it" until you've experienced it. Here's the biggest secret... afterwards you're going to look back on BMT as some of the EASIEST crap you have to go through. PS: In tech school you are going to become an expert. Seriously. You will have more subject matter expertise than any of your friends that went to college. BUT, you're an expert at being an apprentice. When you get to your first base you'll be rarin' to go. But, you've only been trained to apprentice level. People only a year older will be approaching master level already, so don't come in with your new found knowledge expecting people to listen to you. At that point, the Air Force has given you the basic knowledge and vocabulary so that you'll understand what those older can teach you.

On the last day, just after our graduation parade, I heard one of the guys in the Flight say something about never having to repeat the General Orders again. I was surprised, and realized, we were suppose to have memorized the General Orders, I didn't memorize anything. No one during Basic Training ever asked me to repeat them, even during the regular inspections. I wouldn't recommend doing what I did, part of the problem I had was I could not understand the TI's thick NYC/Puero Rican accent and it took me almost 3 1/2 to 4 weeks to even figure out half of what he was saying. Needless to say, I was in the shit a lot and graduated last in the class. Just an aside story. The TI couldn't start anything he was saying without saying either "Git'cher" or "Gawrt-Damng", or he mispronounced almost every word he spoke. So, it goes like this. "AIRMAN WOOTIE !!" "Git'cher...why dooz you boot look like dat shit?" "AIRMAN WOOTIE!! Gitcher..Gawrt-Damng ass on dat parade grount and giff me twenny lap".

After the 2nd week its pretty easy, all the progress checks are easy but for those first 2 weeks ur gonna be thinking “why did i join”😂but after that the mti’s become cool af

The food was very good at Lackland back in 81. Chanute AFB had better food and served 4 meals a day. The length of BMT was only 6 weeks in 81. The TIs were tougher back in 81 but the PT was easier. Several of our TIs were former Marines from the Vietnam era. I see Lackland AFB has remodeled the dorms and that is great! I would give anything to go back in time and start all over. I enjoyed my 20 years of honorable service. It's wonderful to see good folks like the 2 of you serving our country. @@VileficHD honestly for me it was quite a long process, it took about a year from when I first called my recruiter (feb 2020) to ship date (feb 2021). This was because covid closed the recruiters and MEPS down for a bit, so I wasnt able to go to MEPS until July.. I was supposed to enlist then, but I had some complications and needed more documentation. I finally enlisted in Nov and was given the Feb ship date. Since I'm in the reserves, I was able to pick the base I am assigned to and was given the options of the available jobs I qualified for there. I was given 5 choices and I chose Avionics.. and technically didn't sign any contract until I chose my job. I was told I can switch after 4 years, but I've been given different info about how smooth that process will be.

I went through BMTS in 78 at 17 .. one afternoon I was on dorm guard duty alone .. a Msgt who was the senior TI of the Bmt squadron came up to the door and wanted in . I knew who he was obviously but couldn't let him in without his dod id . He screamed and yelled for what seemed like an eternity to me . When I asked again for proper identification. He pulled out and presented a dod Id everything perfect his name and rank etc. EXCEPT instead of his photo there was a photo of a German Shepard ! Lol I thought I was hallucinating at first . He went crazy when I still refused entry , he was screaming and kicking and punching on the door and the window I thought he might actually break the glass . Finally he pulled out another ID with HIS picture on it , along with a control card and I let him in . He just walked by me and said calmly good job and went into our Ti's office . I wrote it all up on my report lol it was surreal . And the TI's never singled me out after that ... It was Msgt Blackwell . 3702 sq 2nd to none Flt 180.

My little nugget of advice for anyone going to BMT, always know exactly to whom you are speaking. When I was at BMT in the autumn of 1989, one Saturday afternoon I took out the drawers of my wall locker and had most of my body up inside one of the drawer openings dusting off little flakes of rust that kept falling on my security drawer white towel causing me to have demerits. A senior master sergeant walked up to me and kicked me in the feet and asked me what I was doing. He sounded just like the guy who slept in the bunk beside mine. When he kicked me a second time, I said really loudly, “motherfucker, if you kick me again, I’m gonna come out of this drawer and kick your skinny ass!” The next thing I know, the senior master sergeant is grabbing me by my combat boots and yanked me out of the drawer opening. As I looked up, I saw nothing but stripes for days. I wanted to die. I snapped my feet and stood at attention and proceeded to get smoked for what seemed like the next two hours. I have taken that experience through the remainder of my life. Always, always know to whom you are speaking, especially in the military!

My best BMT advice is.. besides trying to plan on going in the fall or spring, My TI told us on DAY 1... "PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL".. seems simple. They will DRILL into you.. how to fold your socks, shirts, EVERYTHING... Reason is... at some point you will go to tach school, they will teach to to maintain.. say a C-130.. and lets say, you DIDNT PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL and that plane crashed.. you're responsible for someone's life lost. PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL, not because your socks folded one way is right, but because EVERYTHING you learn after that IS VITAL... it could be someone's life in your hands. PAY ATTENTION, DO EXACTLY AS YOU ARE TOLD.

What happened to me? I have very smelly feet hahahaha. My flight begged our MTI's to put my boots onto the fire escape at night, but they wouldn't hear of it.

I have a question about the eating. I myself usually don’t eat much , like one meal a day tbh. And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one. Like my usual mornings at work , I drink my coffee, maybe a light snack like a muffin. But then don’t really eat lunch. Then get home and eat dinner. I maybe eat another snack here and there throughout work but never really have 3 full meals a day. Would that be a problem in bmt?
