It's called familiarity. He's known Truman all his life so there's some kind of emotional attachment. Maybe he has some real feelings of friendship for truman. Still it just wasn't enough for him to tell Truman the truth.

  • @KombatGod

    @KombatGod

    3 жыл бұрын

@@lynnpabontheelitehero6579 I think you summarized it perfectly. Everybody is just saying "oh Marlon truly feels sorry for Truman, he's a good guy" or the opposite "no, he's worse than anybody else, because he lies to his face and only feels sorry for himself" while really it's a mix of both, and having complex characters is one of the great things about this movie. There also is the thing that maybe he really only started to feel this way for him when Truman started to want to see the rest of the world. As long as Truman was content with his life, Marlon didn't question his role, after all he too was raised in that environment so it was his normality. Maybe what we see in the movie is the beginning of Marlon's conscience, so if Truman changed his mind and didn't try to escape maybe there'd come a point when Marlon would snap and tell him the truth.

It's the opposite, he couldn't stand how casually the others were talking about this and was basically trying to confront them with the reality of all their actions (including his own). He resents the whole thing, and of all the people involved he's the one I can forgive because he was raised in the show himself - akin to being brought up in a cult.

There’s no way that all of these people who knew Truman from when he was a child, and his wife would be that sociopathic to not care about him at all. Apparently there are deleted scenes showing that Marlon genuinely cared about him and was wrapped with guilt and I wish they’d kept them in along with this scene. I wouldn’t have minded if this movie was closer to two hours. Marlon had wasted character potential. When you think about it he was just a child when he started the show and probably didn’t really know or have a say in what he was getting involved in.

From a storytelling and characterisation standpoint I think this was criminal to cut. It doesn't just give us some worldbuilding behind the scenes on the world Truman inhabits, more critically it underlines the cruel emotional detachment of the entire cast towards Truman. For all the film's many accomplishments I don't think the final cut really succeeds at this, Meryl is the only character who is really shown to be dispassionate about Truman's wellbeing. You'd be forgiven for coming away thinking Marlon and most of the rest of the cast did in some way 'feel' their relationships to Truman. Maybe Marlon did, but there's an element of professional detachment - he ultimately does choose the show over the friendship. The invisible hand of Christof really makes itself known here; the net around Truman's life is encapsulated in this script reading sequence.

I think the intention was to keep most of the behind the scenes a mystery and focus more on Truman's changing experience. Otherwise it would be more of a horror-type of film where everyone is a sinister character look up at someone in a cage. I think it was fine how it was made. There are still a lot of details that were left out even from the original script and the deleted scenes, like what was Christof's motivation to make something like this or how it was even made legal. However, the deleted scenes are still pretty interesting.

They should've kept this in the film. It's important as we get to see the actors behind the scenes on getting ready for the week. Also, on air conception. That is freaking creepy and disturbing! Yuck! Basically they are trying to force Truman to have a kid, and that actress is willing to carry and give birth on air! And then the baby will be born into captivity and will live the same like as Truman. Really really creepy and too far.

I'm on the fence as to which way to take Marlon's comments. At first I thought this scene did a great job at showcasing Marlon's total disregard for Truman's well-being. The film itself really seemed to make Marlon out to be a self-absorbed and disingenuous actor who is entirely apathetic to Truman's plight. However there was always enough grey area in the delivery that left room for Marlon to possibly perhaps genuinely care about Truman, just not as much as he cared about being a famous actor with a nice salary. Anyway, this scene initially struck me as Marlon casually questioning the show's protocol in the event of Truman's death as if he was inquiring about lunch. Total disregard for Truman. Yet when I watch again, I see in Marlon's face that he's not sharing in the excitement and glee the other actors are feeling. That suggests to me that he could simply be asking this question to spite his co-workers. Still, though... Marlon gave me awful vibes the entire movie. He was crucial in keeping Truman contained and seemed to take no issue in gaslighting Truman and acting as Christof's main tool in keeping Truman imprisoned in the false reality he was held captive in.

1:49 that flick of the head shows his anger at the inhumanity of this new actress, disregarding life.It shows that when she asks "what happens when they are both on camera together". if he gave no shit about truman he would roll his eyes or just ignore it but he reacts in a frustrated fashion showing his annoyance with he situation. which leads me to believe that he is stuck in this position. He like truman is trapped. yes he has one and freedom but without him, truman has no real friends.he can risk telling him its fake and losing a wage, thousands of jobs, trumans sanity, trumans life if the producers didn't want him dead, and that's if he believed hi. with cameras on truman 24 hours a day there is no way to tell him without the audience and the creator knowing. it would be suicideto tell him so he becomes locked in this place, acting as a betrayal. the scene where he talks to truman about it being fake the bridge shows his anger and sadness but he can't risk it, for his own sake and because he knows what the creators are like, they might just kill of truman. that line about when truman dies, i believe is testing water to check how far they will go.

I really wish they kept this scene in. I think Marlon is a monster like the rest of them but he cares on his own way, I think he was okay playing his role since he's just getting paid to drink and be someone's buddy and wasn't really "hurting" Truman after all. I mean Marlon was a child actor raised in this manufactured environment too he just knew the nature of his reality, it must all seem relatively normal to him. Then after Truman has his breakdown and the bridge scene happens where he's told to directly manipulate and lie to him with a ridiculous plot of bringing his father back from the dead to use against him I think he started to question if the whole setup was right or not, it went way beyond "maintainong an illusion" to forcing him to accept it for the benefit of others. So his dismissive face and scoffing at the actor meeting discussing plot points and his comment about Truman's death I took as genuine concern and finally bringing up the callous absurdly of it all since he's had to really think about it for the first time in his life.

It's probably why Truman was so obsessed with Silvia cause she was the only real person in his life. Some one who was fully honest and had genuine feelings for him. That and his dad. His adopted father actually broke into the set to see his son again. Though his motivations could be debatable given that in the end he chose to help in deceiving Truman.

Not sure if it was intentional on Weir's part or Harris' part, but everything Christof does from his tendency to wear black, to his obsession with water and water related disasters and finally his control freak mannerisms, steer solely in the direction of 80s James Cameron. I read that there is a deleted scene of Marlon finding Truman as he was making his escape, that they make eye contact, and Marlon says something along the lines of "he's not here" to Christof and the producers. But I haven't been able to find it on KZread or anywhere. If you have a link, please share!

I like this scene. If only because it shows a little bit of sympathy Marlon felt for Truman. Of course it changes nothing.

You gotta feel for Marlon. Imaging “pretending” to be something he’s not since he was 7 years old (unless they chose another actor) after that pneumonia reference.

1:51 This "joke" is very heartless. And the fact that the actors laugh at it.

When 'we the people' find out they are Truman, it will be the end of the world as we know it.

They cut out a lot from the script and the movie with Marlon's actor actually becoming sympathetic with Truman. This scene is more proof of that with him joking about what are we going to do next to him pretty much. The movie still works without those moments but it would have worked fine too if they kept it. Kinda sorry they didn't. I like seeing some of the actors actually feeling guilty about what they do and not just being robots as they are portrayed as in the final version of the movie with these parts cut.

Marlon definitely showed some guilt when he had to lie to Truman
