I also heard that Godzilla was wearing the largest Vessi shoes ever made (it was a special order) when he was rampaging through Japan.

When the cemeteries of Paris overflowed and they moved the bodies to the catacombs underground, many, many tons of "corpse wax" were recovered from the bodies and given over to the local soap and candle makers. As it turns out, deadman's fat can be rendered into really high quality wax, due to human fat being oiler than typical sources like beef or pork.

In the movie and book Fight Club they make soap out of human fat. They explain in the story how human fat makes the best soap. Instead of killing people, they steal the fat from liposuction clinics instead. The movie and book joke about how they are stealing the fat from women and selling it back to them as soap.

@LordMacKarl It's called Perfume: Story of a Murderer and, oddly enough, it's set in France not long after the previously mentioned "removal of corpses to the underground catacombs". I really recommend the film (Ben Wishaw is marvellous at being Jean Baptiste Grenouille) AND the exquisite book by Patrick Süskind. It absolutely terrified me as a teenager, as I happen to gather the features that murderer seems to like best (red hair, green eyes and freckles). Geez now I need to watch it again!

I actually really liked the remake, especially when I was younger. Idk, just something about the concept of being turned into a living wax model, unable to move or scream, trapped for eternity-- absolutely mortified me when I was a child. It was even more exemplified when the one guy tried to help his friend out of the wax, only to literally peel his skin off, showing how futile it was and that he could never go back to being "human" ever again. How horrifying is that? Idk, maybe I'm alone when it comes to this opinion, but I really don't think it deserved the level of hate it got. So much of the imagery in that movie was outstanding for the time.

I didn't watch the movie but judging from the one scene showing him peeling his skin off I wonder if he could be fixed (if not horribly scarred) if he was kept as a burn victim. It would all depend on the level of burn I would assume, I would think though if the joints and orifices were freed recovery could he possible.

It’s worth seeking out Paris Hilton’s thoughts and opinions of the film many years after she was in it. It’s kinda sad actually. She was so excited to be in a horror, doing something new, and be taken seriously. Then she saw how the film was marketed as basically ‘come watch Paris Hilton get horrifically murdered!” And she realised they had just used her as a gimmick because it was popular to hate on her. I think it was in a Netflix documentary about her that she spoke of it.

god thats such a cool interpetation, that he makes these beautiful wax sculptures because hes despereate for beauty in himself. im a fellow vincent enjoyer, hes my favorite character, and while i dont exactly find him hot (im aroace, i dont really find anyone personally attracted like i want to bone them or date them) i do find him kinda cute. i like his real face quite a lot! i really like him mostly for his overall cool look and the mystery with his character. i wish we saw more into his character besides "coldhearted killer with a passion for art and has a bit of a softer side for his brother despite the fact said brother manipulates and seemingly verbally abuses him". also why the hell cant he talk? when he wails out of greif and when hes panting while struggling with wade you can very clearly hear his voice is incredibly hoarse and ragged, but. why? they werent connected by throat? and why does bo get to have a perfect set of hair when he should have a big scar on the back of his head that matches the scar on vincents face. hair doesnt grow on scars, he should have a patch of missing hair where his twin was removed

Older people feel nostalgic about art that they experienced at a young age and they tend to be disdainful of the new art that interests young people. Over long periods of time you get older works, vulgar in their time, tending to be considered "classy" and "upperclass".

The brow's got less to do with genre tropes and more to do with how well the story invokes its themes, and how lasting/profound those themes are. Classics might seem highbrow because they're old and thus difficult for contemporary audiences to enjoy, but what actually makes them lasting and widely praised was always in them from the moment they were first published.

You're basically still aware of what's happening, but once the wax gets hard enough around your chest you stop being able to take a breath. Essentially you end up dying from a form of positional asphyxia. That crap's scary as hell.

Omg I’m so happy I can relate to someone about this. Saw House of Wax when I was 11 about 9 years ago and I have literally never stopped thinking about that scene ever since

The bits where he touches his friend's wax face and his eyes move and he tries to peel the wax off but the skin comes off with it - so deliciously horrific. It will stay with me forever.

Nothing messed me up more as a kid than seeing a man covered in hot wax while he was still alive… and then his friend literally ripping his face off😭

So we all agree that we found this movie by mistake as children and were traumatized for a while.

I saw it because it was on the weekend midnight movie segment of the local tv station. I thought the premise was very cool and fresh for a horror movie. The part where the characters unknowingly ripped a victim's waxed cheek and ripped his actual cheek muscles off too was very good. The protagonists were nothing to write home though.

I remember stumbling across this movie as a kid and being entranced. It was by far one of the most terrifying concepts for a horror film that I had ever heard of as a child. The thought of being left to perish in a cast of wax is horrific. I still find this movie nostalgic and disturbingly intriguing.

Kraig Pierce I used to be an incredibly anxious and paranoid child. If I would even catch a glimpse of a horror trailer on T.V., I’d have a panic attack. I eventually began to ease into the genre, starting with Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds”. Every since then, I’ve been infatuated with horror films!

My brother bought the dvd when i was a kid, and just by looking at the back cover i got nightmares for months.

Honestly, one of the most disturbing scenes was when he poked his friend and he started crying because of the pain. I CAN'T. Truly awful.

Fun personal story. When this movie came out I was fairly young and didn't watch it directly causing false memories about it as my brain tried to make sense of it. So I originally thought the movie was about a wax museum that was haunted by the ghosts of the people trapped inside who'd take the form of wax dummy version of themselves to capture others and slowly turn people into them to maintain the museum as the older they get the more they melt and become distorted. NOT a by the numbers slasher flick with a neat gimmick.

The thing about the Uncanny Valley is _subtlety,_ but even if “deformed lunatic with non-human face chasing person through decrepit building with murderous intent” is likely the least subtle thing I could think of putting in a horror film, it is none the less _terrifying_ because of that.

Yeah, the closer the resemblance to reality, the more uncanny it is. The most uncanny is when you can't figure out a single damn thing wrong with it, yet your brain is still *screaming* that it's totally wrong.

as a kid, seeing Lucas from one tree hill, Arnez from one on one, Sam from supernatural, the guy from the scary movie parody, AND paris hilton in one movie I thought it was gonna be funny, lighthearted, maybe a LIL scary. OH BOY were 5th grade me and my friends WRONG 💀💀

Sometimes horror doesn’t have to be a massive work of art, sometimes it’s just some gore and fun

House of wax is a guilty pleasure of mine. My roommates and I watched it stoned out of our minds on a Halloween night and I remember just enjoying every minute of 2000s cheesyness combined with a weird sense of dread

the jumpscare where the protagonist and her boyfriend are in the house and she see's Vincent through the window scarred me at a young age. I would have nightmares about catching a slightly deformed man with hallowed out eyes looking at me before he speeds off. I watch this film today and totally get why he scared me as a kid

My fave part to the 2005 movie was when they enter the church thinking they interrupted. Then visit again and its all wax figures

I hate when she gets her finger snipped off and also when she awfully falls into the rotten bodies. This film was my first horror film, over 13 years ago, back when I was far too young to watch it! Also I love Paris in this!

"If they're gonna make a point of making the museum literally out of wax, they know they've gotta melt that shit or we will absolutely riot." They knew it so well, they not only melted the museum, they burned down the entire damn soundstage.

Pretty good film. It's not going to blow you away but it's worth a watch thanks to its eerie atmosphere. Plus, it was cool to see a Supernatural episode where Jensen & Jared battle wax figures of Paris Hilton and Gandhi.

I always thought this was more of a remake of Tourist Trap than House of Wax. I can't believe they let Sam Winchester die in the movie. The gore effects and wax sculptures were pretty good.

The part that got me was when the killer glued Carly's lips together, then later shes trying to get her brothers attention and he cuts off her fingers. *shudder*

I actually enjoyed this movie, once I got over the suspension-of-disbelief hurdle of someone building a wax town in Louisiana. The production design was pretty interesting.

Despite the 2005 remake being mediocre, I actually found it entertaining. The characters aren’t good, but they aren’t completely unbearable. I also like the twin killers and their backstory. Can you consider doing a video on Eraserhead?

The humans under wax in the museum trope originated from Madame Tussaud's. She was commissioned to make the wax head casts of the prominent figures guillotined during the French Revolution. And she also made some casts for herself, to display them in her museum in Paris and later in her travelling exhibition throughout in the UK.

Yes yes yes! My family and I went to Singapore in 2019 and we stopped by at Madame Tussaud's. It was amazing, being able to interact with celebrities and look at them up close, but at the same time unsettling, since they didn't move nor show any sign of life even though they look alive. Plus, there were little children in there and I was scared they might topple over one of the figures, or worse, break them

The true horror is how Vincent doesn't show up more often.

if Ryan doesn’t convince you, this movie is a great hidden gem with lots of heart (while kinda dumb), extremely entertaining

"Was blind in one eye and so could not watch the 3D." Oh geez. I've never even thought about that. I considered our new 3D glasses to be an improvement because theres no annoying red/blue or green/magenta filter on a movie, but not about the fact that you only need to look through one lens for it to work.

Its because depth perception is something your brain learns as you developed as an infant. It's a unique problem for people who have sight disabilities who get restorative surgery and for the half blind. If you lose an eye many years into your life you'll still have depth perception wired into your brain, to use with your singular eye. Even if it wont be as effective

@@KayosHybrid If you lose an eye you lose depth perception. One-eyed people who lost their eye later in life just have pseudo-depth perception. Their life experience allows them to guess distances based on their knowledge of the relative size of objects at relative distances. It's entirely a mental exercise for one-eyed people, as they cannot literally see depths. Two eyed people just use their binocular vision to determine depth instinctually, with very little thinking required. It's a simple matter of measuring the angle of the pupils to the focal point. It's a completely different process.

@@trequor exactly. As someone who has a blind eye i have a lot of trouble with sports because of this.

The only part about the film that really got to me was when the boyfriend is covered in wax and he's aware of everything happening to him; then later on he's found by one of the friends and the wax has fused to his skin to the point where when the friend tries to take of the wax, the skin is being peeled off as well. But then I read that the boyfriend should've been dead by that point due to suffocation, so yeah.. other than having My Chemical Romance on the soundtrack and having that nod to Vincent Price, the movie was at total miss (it looked ok visually, but it's one of those films that's never sat well with me.. I think because it felt to me like it was trying to hard to be gritty/scary/disturbing if that makes sense.. there was potential, especially when you find out the plot twist of the townspeople all being dead people covered in wax, but.. ) EDIT: I also really like the guy with the paddles in Price's House of Wax; I think it was because this was one of the early uses of the 3D, and it was just a fun little moment showcasing it, and I really enjoyed and appreciated it xD

I quite liked the visuals and the atmosphere, but for me where it fell short it leaned a bit too far into the teen slasher vibe, where it’s just a bunch of glamour shots of attractive young folk being murdered. But I do think it had some scenes that were gems and genuinely creepy.

You’re probably the number one KZreadr I go to understand horror, because you’re videos goes very in depth, and you’re videos help understand horror, and how to do genre right, and like how you pick some movies that don’t get enough recognition as lots of others do. I’m going try to take film school to understand them even more, hopefully get into film directing.

Saw this before entering high school. This shit terrified me for a couple of years and remained in my top ten scary movies of all time

I can’t explain why and I know theres wayyyy better stuff out there but house of wax will forever be one of my favourite horror movies. It was the first I ever watched and back then it scared me shitless lol now I just watch it for nostalgia and entertainment purposes but I still love it especially the concept

Out of curiosity and because I'm always looking for new horror, what other movies do you think are better than House of Wax? House of Wax dusturbed me so much I can't think of too many other films that have that same unsettling factor (body horror is the scariest sub genre imo and Tusk is right there at the top also lol)

House of wax 2005 isn’t some magnum opus or anything but just like the 13 ghosts remake, it gets an unfair shake and is more serviceable than critics said. Neither is amazing but neither is trash either and there is a real love for the craft underneath the cliches. They make a good 2000s creature double feature pizza night with friends. 👍🏼

ok dude... that script for vessi is f*cking hilarious. you make sponsors ads enjoyable. DO YOU KNOW HOW RARE THAT IS MATE?? I remember learning about the uncanny valley in high school and understanding my weird fears involving a 4ft tall doll my mother kept in the closet. She's still there... waiting...

So happy to see you cover House of Wax, such an underrated gem of the 2000s that I think deserves more praise.

One thing I always wondered about: Wouldn't the place stink horrendously? All those rotting corpses within the wax would be decomposing. I think the smell would be so overwhelming that anyone nearing the town would immediately turn around. PS: The Vessi ad was very funny!

Ryan's videos are the only videos where I never try to skip over the sponsored products section, he actually puts so much effort into it that it's still entertaining to watch unlike most other content creators.

I actually liked this movie, most horrorfilms are pretty boring to me, but this one was entertaining :-)

I've seen Halloween, Texas chainsaw massacre, friday the thirteenth, and a few others, but non of them were truly scary to me :( rn there's only house of a 1000 corpses on my list left

Teenage 30 year olds is the perfect Slasher movie quip.

Watched that movie as a teenager, back when Paris Hilton was at the top of her game... that movie caused nightmares.

Paris Hilton was the only reason why I saw this film in the first place.

This is way a hate wax stuff that looks a lot like human. I’m fine if they are cartoony or non human

Definitely. Worse still is when it's of people you know are still alive. Wax figures of Elvis Presley or The Beatles, not too bad. But ones of people like Bruce Willis or Helen Mirren? That could be a bit off putting at times.

House of Wax is one of my favourite remakes and I’ve always had a massive love for it - glad to see you cover it, even if it’s only for a small portion of the video.

I've watched House of Wax a few months ago for the first time and actually really enjoyed it. Can't understand all the hate it got after it was released. Imo the acting was solid, Cuthbert and Hilton were both much better than expected and the effects were cool. There are for sure worse horror movies out there.

Wow...im only realizing now that as a kid i watched the “kid-friendly” version of this...its a dutch movie called “huis anubis en de wraak van arghus” or “house anubis and the revenge of arghus” i still had traumas from that movie and now finding out there’s a maturer version is insane lmfao

I had a lot of fun watching this film. Definitely one of underrated horror films of the 2000s in my opinion.

Underrated how? It was a paint by the numbers horror flick. Everything about it is mediocre and it was rated as such. The interesting concept can't override the poor execution.

The thing I didn't like was that twist at the end. "they were triplets" and the third brother sitting there, smiling, looking soo un threatening. That character was so pointless.

Saw it as a kid and loved it, re-watched it today and still love it. This is one of those horror movies that despite the critics and audience ratings, I really like it. It's an awesome and creepy concept and which holds the film up imo, despite the flaws such as characters. You can tell from the visuals that this had a high budget

this movie introduces me on my chemical romance because of its end credits music now, helena is my fave mcr song

I think in the movie the killers explain that their mother was a talented wax sculptor and it was her dream to create a town of wax sculptures but died before she could do it, that’s their motive for killing and turning people into wax, not to make a place for Vincent but to try and make their mother’s dream a reality

I don't think people acknowledge how big of a deal Mystery of The Wax Museum really was. The movie made such a big impression on audiences that artists and writers were imitating it for the following decade -- especially by comics writers/artists during the golden age of comics. I counted not one, not two, but three instances where they used the Wax museum/serial killer antagonist trope just in Fawcett comics alone (facing off against Bulletman, Captain Marvel Jr. and Captain Marvel respectively), and that's not even counting the archetype being recycled in single issues of Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Owl. EC COMICS would have a field day repeating this trope in the horror comics of the fifties. And I'm willing to bet the latter was actually what got talks of rebooting it as 'House of Wax' to start,.

The true terror of House of Wax for me was specifically the one scene at the beginning where Carly sees Vincent looking at her through the window in said House of Wax. He didn't even do anything, he was just standing there (menacingly), yet it was the only scene in the movie that filled with with dread that I'd only experienced from one other movie in my life. I was 15 at the time, and for almost 5 years afterwards, I couldn't go to the bathroom at night without turning every light in my path on first, because I was so terrified of glancing out my window and seeing someone standing there. I didn't care if they saw me- I just didn't want to see _them._

I haven’t watch the video yet but thank you for at least covering this movie. Whether it be negative or positive. I’ve always had a soft spot for this movie despite its heavy flaws. The movie theatre scene and the ending are my favorite. And the juxtaposition of your ad with light hearted music with violent video is amazing!

Your explanation of the good/evil twin concept was really interesting. Makes me think of the movie Dead Ringers about the twin doctors and their interesting psychology.

this movie is actually really good in my opinion it has great horror scenes and chases sequences and pari hilton gets way too much hate for her acting it was decent not great but no bad.

I love how the symbolism of twins or sort of duality is constantly brought up throughout the whole movie. The movie starts with the twins and then ends with the twins being kind of “conjoined” in the same spots they were when they were born and when they end up dying. Something else I'd like to point out, again this is before watching the full video (love it by the way), is how The Sinclair Twins are reflected by the other two siblings. Like Vincent is sort of seen through the sister, of course not to the same extent, and Bo is reflected through the brother, once again not exactly the same. The brother is seen as more angry and unruly when it comes to his actions while also being seen as the “bad sibling” while the sister is seen as the “good sibling”, like how Judy saw Bo and Vincent, respectively. Anyway, sorry for my rant and most likely poor grammar. I genuinely enjoyed the movie and I just thought it was interesting. Update: I just said it verbatim as you. I'm so sorry

Ok but, I remember my dad making me watch House of Wax 1953 with him, I honestly only remember the dead bodies as wax figures and Vincent Price standing up out of the wheelchair in the dramatic "oh no" tone. I have never seen the 2005 one, maybe I should watch it just 'cause

Loved your inventive tie-ins for Vessi. I have always been terrified by wax museums, having visited one at a very young age. After that experience, I later became a big fan of the Vincent Price movie, which I would catch on late night television whenever it was aired. I was thus quite intrigued when the remake was announced, and enjoyed it quite a bit at the time. Thank you so much for producing throughtful and thorough videos about each title you tackle. Most reviews of the remake simply dismiss it as trash and leave out all the background you take care to cover so well. Kudos.
