Excellent video. There's a note about the Code of Honor though. It's more than just handshakes. There's 5 rules that make up the Code of Honor: 1. You must shake hands before and after every match 2. No outside interference 3. No sneak attacks 4. No harming the officials 5. Any action resulting in a disqualification violates the Code of Honor On paper, those are all normal wrestling rules but ROH presented them in a way that they actually felt like they meant something so when the rules were broken, it helped the heel generate more heat. That sounds dumb now, but you have to remember that ROH formed in 2002, right after the fall of ECW and WWE just started to shift away from the Attitude Era into Ruthless Aggression. Wrestling was still living in the "let's make everything a hardcore match" mentality that permeated late 90's/early 2000's wrestling, especially with the rise of indie companies like CZW and IWA-Mid South. ROH's decision to go against the grain of the time and present actual wrestling with actual rules was considered radical for the time and the presentation of the Code of Honor was part of that. They downplayed it a bit in later years and seems to be pretty non-existent under Tony Khan, but back then, it was a major part of the overall presentation of ROH.

This was great, Jack! Thanks for bringing back those amazing memories. 03-08 ROH is still easily my favorite era of any wrestling company. A lot of the last decades biggest stars of WWE (and even AEW now) and the backstage employees behind them in some cases all young and going balls to the wall in an environment that grew with them and with the fans.

I believe CM Punk was a Big THREAT to some WWE stars at that time. It's 1 of the reasons they treated him so unceremoniously. He was good for business 🤝, The WWE Universe adored him & WWE Management always believed in giving the fans what they wanted!! I'm not sure if it will ever happen ( more importantly I don't think CM Punk would even care) but, Punk should be inducted into The WWE Hall of Fame canyons. He gave so much to the fans & WWE on general 😊

@@phabiorules I don't think it's Vince who had a problem with Punk, however, There was a problem with a certain IN-LAW of Mr. McMahon's who did alone with Jon Cena. Punk was promised a Wrestling Championship match at the next WrestleMania if he wrestled The Undertaker. A deal's a deal dispike personal feeling & it's bad 😞 business 🤝- 👎 when it isn't honor. Furthermore, it's extremely Petty Minded when you fired the man on his wedding 💒 day!! That's a ⚫ 👁️ on The WWE each year CM Punk's presence isn't 👀 in The WWE Universe!!

How so? I like CM Punk but there's so much revisionist history where he's concerned and his place in Pro wrestling. That's based on how fanatical most CM Punk are. You could say they're stans or marks if you will. There are so many wrestlers that have more influence from that era that were in ROH. Samoa Joe and Christopher Daniels did more in ROH and you have the likes of Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuiness

In 2005, ROH lost Punk, Gibson, Kendrick, and Matt Hardy all within a few weeks. But didn't miss a beat because they still had Danielson, Joe, Aries, Strong, Shelley, Daniels, Cabana, Homicide, and McGuinness, among others. That's how strong the roster was.

  • @LokiTricksterG

Although James Gibson was a great choice to take the belt off Punk, I was always a little disappointed it wasn't Christopher Daniels. Not only did Daniels and Punk have a long history with one another, but it would have also represented the Daniels character coming full circle. Daniels started out (in kayfabe) hating the "honor" aspect of ROH and wanting to destroy it, so the irony of him coming around and being the one to save the Ring of Honor Championship would have been a stroke of booking genius. Besides that, Daniels was such an important figure in the early days of ROH and it's a shame he had to wait so long before finally getting the belt. This would have been the perfect moment for him to finally win the big one.

Cheering a heel doesn't make you a smark. It's as simple as this: who does the crowd like more? You love to hate a good villain, and so the hero must be more skilled or liked than the villain to be cheered. That's why they didn't cheer James Gibson in the first Summer of Punk. The crowd decides who is their champion. The crowd. Not the booker.

  • @jamesb1988

    @jamesb1988

    Жыл бұрын

This is also why Cena refused to turn heel later in his career, his reasoning being pretty solid... John said something to the effect of "What is the point of a heel? To get booed. What do people do? They boo me. Why would I turn heel? Just to get cheered by the people that boo me now? No point."

  • @GrimmHollywood

@@jamesb1988 Righteous. I didn't know any of that, thanks James! I remember when Roman Reigns was struggling to get over and getting booed when he was supposed to be a face. Now he's cheered as a heel (I think he's heel? I don't watch WWE anymore). But it's great - moderating how fans should feel is ridiculous. "You boo the bad guys and cheer the good guys, no matter what!" It's insane, and a moronic standpoint.

You’re upset at a guy because he left a promotion where he probably wasn’t making enough to even eat? ROH had talents making $12K a year, and that was with Sinclair ownership. You’re talking about life changing money. Going from struggling to pay for a meal to being able to change your entire life. Doubt you’d make a different decision in the same shoes.

Being upset could make sense if he was leaving good money just to go somewhere for max money. In this scenario he’s leaving struggle money, in an industry with short careers, to make life changing money. Kinda fascinating to me anybody would ever fault that decision.

Loving CM Punk aside, I don't think that the Pipe-bomb really caused or enabled all the big changes to come (except for Daniel Bryans Championship, maybe), it mostly just announced them. AEW came into being because Cody Rhodes & Chris Jericho left a WWE they were unhappy with to find enjoyable employment somewhere else. And it needed the active decisions of the Young Bucks & Kenny Omega (& Adam Page) to not agree to WWE offers but instead try the AEW route instead. So for the most part, AEW exists mostly because WWE did not learn from the second Summer of Punk, and instead kept on going down the same route that had a WWE audience excitedly chanting "TNA" back in 2011 triggered by a Lo-Ki promo. Or maybe because Vince didn't learn, and HHH was only given a too small playground to implement what he (might have) learned from it.

Punk v Raven Punk v Joe Summer of Punk 1 Punk v Hardy Punk v Cena and Summer of Punk 2 Punk v Lesnar And now Punk v MJF I'm mentioning feuds not just matches, Punk has always had this magnetic personality and is such a natural at making you heavily invested in whatever story he's involved in. He's never been the most athletic, never done all those flips or power moves. He's just the best at making you feel with classic working and selling. And that's wrestling. It's not about how many moves you do, it's always about how much you make people feel. And Punk is proof, just like Bret was, just like Austin was, just like Taker was. Today in AEW, Punk is one of the few people you can't miss, the only others that come to mind are MJF, FTR, Danielson and more on those lines. Unfortunately they're the minority.

CM Punk is definitely the game changer of professional wrestling in his own right. Just because he has hurt some feeling of certain nincompoops who are absolutely sensitive about everything and want him to be cancelled doesn't change the fact that CM Punk made them restore their faith in this business. And yes, I'll also agree with you on the fact that CM Punk walked the path, paved the way for other wrestlers to run and in turn, leading to the Formation of AEW.

MY top picks for best wrestlers (of wwe) are 5. Brock Lesnar (2012-2016) 4. John Cena (2005-2008) 3. The Shield 2. Razor Ramon 1. Triple H (2000-now) don't judge my top picks. My honorable mentions are The Undertaker (2004-2017) CM Punk and Chris Jericho. They all had some memorable moments in wwe

If roman reigns can main event 5 wrestlemania’s cm punk deserves 10. He is bigger than anyone in the roster now. Him and randy orton. Roman reigns will never be that guy. Cm punk next big thing after stone cold

Cm Punk is the exception not the rule and that’s why wrestling got tremendously worse when he left…

*plastic comment bomb* Acknowledge that our universal champ was taking orders from the best in the world 100 dollar bill Phil and Black is the indi main event but should it... I wonder what ares and pac would do a 4 way... clearly Roman vs Punk should be what's best for business though.... so you can have the biggest Paul Haymen choice .... someone who can get himself over or another faction boy

Jack is a CM Punk mark lol. It's alright though because it's Jack and he at least has the self-awareness to know he's a CM Punk mark

And then he basically repeated the same story in WWE. Turns out he's not as original as we all thought.

To this day, I've just never ever seen what the big deal is about the guy. I remain utterly unimpressed. Am I the only one?

You're not. I've tried to get him - I just don't. He's no doubt a great wrestler but he's never had the star power or work rate to make him special for me

I feel like current AEW has fallen so far from what could have been after movers and shakers like punk set them in motion. Part of me wishes punk never joined that disappointing promotion
