The true purpose of art | Aurelia Shimkus | TEDxRiga
Have you thought about the true purpose of music and art in general? It is not to simplify and beautify everything. The goal of art is not to entertain us.
Aurelia Shimkus explains what makes art different from the music we listen to enjoy ourselves.
The young and highly talented pianist Aurelia Shimkus (Aurēlija Šimkus) was born in Riga, Latvia on November 2nd, 1997, started to learn the piano play when she was 4 years old in a little Latvian town called Tukums by teacher Jeļena Bērziņa. Currently, she is continuing studies at Emīls Dārziņš Music High School by her musical adviser Sergey Osokin.
Aurelia began to gain international recognition after winning the 3rd prize at the prestigious 11th Kissinger KlavierOlymp international piano competition in Bad Kissingen, Germany. Furthermore, she has recently been awarded with the scholarship of Mozart Gesellschaft Dortmund and thus has performed with the English Chamber Orchestra at the Konzerthaus Dortmund on November 2014. Her debut SACD album Scherzo with the music of Beethoven, Schumann and Liszt was released on August 2013 on the German label ARS Produktion.
German magazine “Piano news” has given her a highest rating and says she is an outstanding pianist and a real treasure!

The unexplored infinity within and around us is reality unset. Observe the form and collapse it to reality.
This gave me goosebumps! I feel so grateful to those who openly express their belief that an eternal world exists simultaneously. Where does inspiration come from, anyway? Where do ideas come from? Art reminds us that the reality that is familiar to us is not all there is. Art is also our way back into remembering the truth that we are inherently creators. We have created everything around us and we continuously do so.
Why doesn't this essential and hopeful message get more reactions??? Anyway, I will do everything to make it spread and heard :-). Thanks you so much for it, Aurelia!

The FUNCTIONAL role of Art in society is to reflect back to us our own image, art is nothing but a mirror. If we are shocked by what we see it is because we're shocked by our own reflection.

I really liked both pieces although much more the last one. Art (paint) and music are completely different kind of arts - one is visual and other is aural. Music is very important to me but the other one is something that I just cannot understand (and I would be grateful if somebody would explain to me) how some piece of painting can cost thousands or even millions.

Monetization of art pieces comes down to manipulation & marketing, but that doesn’t change the value of the piece itself. Same w music. Whoever markets it better becomes more popular, but popularity isn’t the indicator of whether a music is good or bad.

The meaning of life and the eternal has been clearly displayed and written in the Bible if people would just give heed to it. Yes we have a soul, but that soul needs salvation and any amount of art will not do that. "What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul"

Spiritual texts , including the bible and the koran are just works of art. Enjoy them if you want or ignore them if they don't reach you.
I know this is somewhat unfair: every composer sound a bit like someone else and absolute originality is an impossible goal. Do I find in this a slight echo or pre echo of Gershwin? I agree with her message. Entertainment yes, only entertainment, no.

I believe that the main goal of the composer is to translate the essence of their inner-being in full, and it's not clear to me what the higher degrees of that look like, let alone its demonstrability. It may be difficult to sound original among a sea of millions of humans creating noises on a relatively limited amount of musical instruments, but I wouldn't rule out 100% originality just yet. How could we be so sure what that really is?
Great intro... But she reminds me of a math teacher who talked too much about Nothing and failed everyone on everything When her teaching was wishy washy and unpleasant. She just liked having an audience... The purpose of art is to invoke a reaction. That can be to make a statement, convey a feeling, inspire or even scare ... (So to share) The popularity of Pop culture art is part of the power it has - the impact on us and the manipulations it has In is and how we do or see things is the Hidden Force on us. The definition of Work i like is to Move* (Force + direction) So i believe the purpose of art work* is to move people Either to or away from something. We frame pictures to drive focus Position gaze of Portraits to direct the eyes of a viewer... And so one We also either bring them into reality or into an escape from it.

That is not necessarily a good definition. Many things can invoke a reaction, not just art. And if that is the sole criteria, art would be made with the most reaction-inducing intention, which is not true universally.
The piece was absolutely beautiful! But she hyped it up to be this super atonal unapproachable thing which was kind of cringy because the piece was basically just late romantic.
I think the answer to why we don't like to listen to music such as the one she played at the begin is simple. It's chaotic. It doesn't have a structure. Our brain percieves harmony and mathematical structures as pleasant. When there is a mess of tones, melodies, tones that don't harmonize with each other, it doesn't actually create any significant observable pattern and therefore effect. It's just chaos. That's it. Nothing divine about it. If something should be divine, it should be highly organised and harmonic.

Video is sensible and amazing but the nervousness in her voice or accent or something makes it difficult and uncomfortable...
Life is meaningless and so is art.
That is not demon, lady. That is the god within you.
Meaning is so difficult to decipher.
People have tried to define Art for so long now by coming with these vague bs essays. Art communication in a different form. That's it.

No. This is far fetched and vague. Simply feeding skeptics. Listen, ART creates peace where there is violence and love where there is hate. THIS IS ARTS PURPOSE. Elvis was able to destroy much of racism in his segregated fans via art. Christmas music was able to bring soldiers to stop killing each other. WHAT'S TO BE MISUNDERSTOOD? If saving lives and creating a safer world is not a purpose then EVERYTHING is meaningless.

i doubt that it was Elvis intention to crush racism with his art. He just did what he did and things happen. that is in my opinion the magic of art. ask yourself instead why it had such an effect. I think it is very much like what Aurelia is talking about. Art is a tool that lets us delve into this inner world, and if all works out also connect it to others. that makes it different to others methods of inner exploration such as meditation or psychedelics that only works one way, and it defiantly does not need to be pleasant or beautiful to be able to connect.

It's funny how everyone presents their opinions as if that was the ultimate truth. Maybe there is a bit of truth in each, but it doesn't mean it's entirely true
