Ok, the essence of Bhakti Marga is this. You have a concept of your diety, whatever the name is Ram, Krishna, hari, Radha etc. You pick one name, and keep repeating that name mentally or via silent speech(inaudible speech), while you can do audible , it is not possible to do audible all the time, for example if you are in a public setting( supermarket, transit, schools). It is not the name per se that has the power, but it's the sound( also a form of energy manifestation). While you can do Nam Japa of a tree, but I don't think it will have same effect as 'ram'. These are ultimately energy frequency. The goal of name repetition is destroy sanskaras ( mental impressions)embedded in the subconscious mind ( chitta). As you keep on repeating nam Japa, you delete all the bad files that are deposited in the subconscious mind, and become pure consciousness. Now, you are at the door of the grace of God. The final obstacle to open the door to god is 'i' , which is the ego that resides in this human body. Once the ego is destroyed by the grace of a guru, you attain the salvation from the cycles of birth and death. If you do Nam Japa for at least 400,000 times with constant devotion. You will start to experience a state of joy and contentment at all times. But more nam Japa is needed to destroy greed, jealousy, hate, attachment,envy, anger etc. These are all the forces that rob us from peace and happiness. But nam Japa is very important, that is called developing god consciousness. Just like a person who constantly contemplates about becoming rich every time he gets, we need to establish that state within ourself with the divine. If you guys read yoga sutras of patanjali, it lays out clear path on how to attain "samadhi", the ultimate pinnacle of yoga( the union of individual consciousness with the supreme consciousness).
