That looks like a really good movie. My step dad was a radioman in the US Navy in the early 70s and he was based in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. He remembered seeing some things like this from time to time.

Seems the US naval communication station was in Derry/Londonderry, so given the very name of the city and county was and still is a point of contention between Nationalists and Unionists, if that's where he was I imagine he probably would have seen a fair amount of it.

I like the fact that to tick as many "Troubles" related boxes as possible, some troops magically turn in to Paras. Nice attention to detail for them to not be wearing their flak jackets at 2:22 though, they wore it under their smocks instead to be more identifiable. As an addendum, the "regular" infantryman to the right of the door kicker has a sling on his rifle which is attached to his wrist, this was another common practice to stop people from grabbing the rifle and taking it off soldiers on patrol, it stopped it from being pulled away or from being turned towards the soldier as the tension in the sling when grabbed would trap the barrel against the forearm. A decent amount of research actually, impressive!

Before that famous shootout in “The Devil’s Own”.

About 15-20 years before.

As an American born after the height of the troubles it’s wild to see the dynamic some of these neighborhoods had developed in order to fight their fight.

So the troubles were a series of riots and skirmishes between IRA, Ulster loyalists, Protestants, Catholics and British forces. I’m still a bit confused on what caused the troubles.

Religion only because native Irish were and always been catholic Only English settlers who took lands in Ireland during the potato famine were protestant So by this time it became tribal

It was caused basically by the partition of Ireland. After the Anglo-Irish treaty which split Ireland in two, and the IRA lost the Civil War with the pro-treaty side, they went underground. As Northern Ireland was set up, its borders were drawn to create an artifical British Loyalist Protestant majority within those borders. Despite this there was a large minority of Irish Republican Catholics (religion had a minor role for Republicans other than labelling Brits and Irish). The Troubles itself was kickstarted due to systematic inequality against the Irish in NI, and after Loyalists attacked Irish Civil Rights protestors, the British Army was called in to keep the peace. The British Army shot into a crowd during a riot in 1972 (Bloody Sunday), which caused IRA activity to skyrocket, in tandem with reactionary Loyalist terrorism, for the next few decades, even until now to a lesser degree.

Alvis Saracen. Not a really good vehicle in combat considering its very thin armor compared to today’s armor, but it does its job for law enforcement.

The same scene looks really realistic (Humber Pig and Saracen APC) and well-made. In 1996 I visited the Museum of Army Transport in Beverly (UK) and Humber Pig was opened to visitors. It was a little bit devastated, because was placed in the recreation area. Also in Scunthorpe Alvis Stalwart (the same chassis as Saracen) was available for tourist for joy-ride on the beach
