The Trinidad Cassette - Brian Wilson (1982)
THE TRINIDAD CASSETTE - Brian Wilson (1982)
IN ANOTHER LIFE…
In 1982 Brian ran away from everything he knew. His life had become increasingly difficult, receding from activities within the now pretty much defunct Beach Boys, a broke down divorcee with little will to carry on. A scheme was concocted by family members to coerce Brian back into the care of therapist Euguene Landy, who had a short lived stint watching over Brian in 1976. Wilson was falsely told by the Beach Boys that he was penniless and no longer a member of the group, and if he wanted to continue to earn his share of income from the touring bands earnings, he had to reenlist Landy as his caretaker. This didn’t garner the reaction they hoped for, Brian instead took off in the middle of the night, and was missing the next several days.
Eventually, after a three day binge of cocaine, alcohol and heavy amphetamines, Brian ran into an old estranged friend, David Anderle. The pair had barely spoken since the disastrous collapse of Brother Records over a decade ago, yet in Brian’s fragile state, the reminder of simpler days were something to hold on to. Anderle ended up housing Wilson for the following month, connecting with mutual friend Garby Leon. Anderle spent his evenings listening to tapes Leon had of Brian and Dennis performing new material (the fabled cocaine sessions)- always a devout fan of Brian’s music, Anderle pushed Brian to return to the studio as a solo artist, however Brian’s confidence had never been more shot. Friend of both, Van Dyke Parks, happened to be visiting town a fortnight into Brian’s stay. The friends reunited, and despite Brian’s sorry state, Anderle remembers the night fondly in his 1997 memoir ‘How Deep is the Ocean?’ - “I’ll never quite know what compelled me to take him in, I remember fielding calls from Stan Love, Mike Love, all demanding custody over Brian, as far as I was concerned, the previous 20 years of bullying Brian had already been enough… still I’d never seen him so quiet, he kept to himself, he kept himself clean, he barely ate, he was hurting a lot… it wasn’t until the night Van showed up I saw that spark return to him, we were up til 5 in the morning, listening to our old favourite records, talking, laughing, it felt like we were all in our twenties again.”
The following day Parks and Anderle reached out to Marilyn Rovell, the ex-wife of Brian Wilson. Over lunch in Santa Fe, Parks and Anderle were given some old recordings of Brian which were in Rovell’s possession, and the pair discussed Brian’s future. The relationship between Brian and the band had become too broken to repair, yet the trio agreed Brian was in no position to be left alone. It was eventually decided that Brian, with his permission, would join Parks in month long stay in Trinidad and Tobago, where Parks was working with the Esso Trinidad Steel Band, a therapist would be paid to join them out there, and Anderle would join them for the last two weeks of the trip. It was a rather optimistic venture, but the hope was to give Brian a break from the LA life, a break from the turmoil of his family affairs.
The journey soon commenced. Brian became more sociable during the first week, yet still remained a shadow of his former self. In an attempt to bring Brian further out his shell, Anderle and Parks attempted to mix together some demos Brian had recorded, it was also Anderles hope that he could get Brian a solo recording contract at A&M, however he knew he had a mountain to climb given Brian’s status in the music industry as a broke down has been. The Trinidad Cassette, as it eventually became known, was completed by the end of the month, with eventual involvement from Brian two weeks into the process. The tape entered circulation not long after their return to the US. It quickly began to get shared around the underground scene in LA, this was actively helped by Anderale, who created 42 cassettes himself, hoping that the buzz around Brian’s name would help motivate his old friend to continue his recovery, and return to the creative process.
It’s notoriety has only grown over time, and has garnered a cult following. The album today is cited as a proto outsider, lo-fi record, and often compared to the works of Daniel Johnston. Paul McCartney talked about the album during an interview in 1983, stating “i heard that Trinidad cassette from Brian, you know, Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys, it’s a bootleg I think, going around, really special stuff, I hope he comes back from whatever he is going through.”

Love to randomly scrub to a point in a Brian Wilson video and it’s the Shortnin’ Bread riff.
I've always said to myself that 1982 was Brian's darkest year and these recordings really show that. It's truly awful what he went through, but we are all thankful that he is still around...
I used to think Lennon and McCartney were the greatest now I realise it was Wilson

It's a shame Brian Wilson didn't get involved with the L.A Paisley Underground circa 1980's. Frontier Records could've paid for a proper indie studio session, and subsequent release. New Wavers finding their footing in the 80's indie pop scene would've toured with & loved Brian. It wasn't meant to be,which makes it more tragic.

I can picture that time and scene being positive for Brian if he would have participated in it. It was a fun and creative situation in LA. Seems like Dennis and his nurse were pulling him in one direction and Landy in the other.
This first track gives me heavy Walking the Cow by Daniel Johnston - vibes . Both he and Brian Wilson were both intensely gifted musicians but that first track hit me in a weird and powerful way . Super cool upload thanks
When I was getting divorced and was still only separated and wound up being abandoned in an Atlanta apartment by my absent roommate, who left all the bills to me and the rent and the groceries I couldn't afford alone, all because he was gone and so was my ex-husband and I had a private nervous breakdown and had to take about two months off work, I was desperate to express myself. So, a new friend I'd met online coincidentally lived less than a mile from me and all he had was a bunch of 16x20 art paper, black paint, yellow paint, and large paintbrushes, like the kind you can imagine Van Gogh using. I attacked the canvas first with swirls and words and then with actual compositions over the course of a few weeks. This is what this album sounds like to me. Turmoil, hope, prayer, exhaustion, screaming to be understood, individuality, love, soul, human-ness. Who cares if it's really Brian? The impersonation itself is a testament to his immortality.

Amazing recording as a fragment of "Sweet Insanity"!
Don't Let Her Know She's An Angel is one of the most beautiful BW I've heard and it never even made an official release. Shame that he went through what he went through. I can imagine if he'd been fortunate enough to go down a more positive path he'd have had a really great Randy Newman/Neil Sedaka/Elton John kinda 70s and 80s solo career. But through internal and external stimuli other plans were made for him. Thankful for these tapes and other Brian bootlegs and even happier he made it out of personal hell in the last 25 - 30 years. Absolute legend x

He was diagnosed as schizoaffective and when he was about 2021 he had planned attack panic attacks in the early 60s and there after decided he would wasn't going to tour anymore and he was scared. There is a great movie out right now about Brian Wilson I believe it is called long promised Road. It has very intriguing commentary from Bruce Springsteen saying when he first heard surfer girl he listened to it about 1000 times over and over and over and over and then also Elton John comments. I'm looking forward to listening to this especially to the song don't let her know she's an angel which I had never heard yet and will soon one more thing to feast on and live for in the future. @TS "It's a fake fan edit" - otherwise known as a bootleg, which we all knew anyway. "Not produced by Brian" - well, it clearly is Brian, so he did produce the performances. Do you mean to say that this 'Bootleg' wasn't produced by Brian in a studio and released by him? Yes, you're right. That's why it's a bootleg.
Had he been alright he could be up there with - and had had a solo career just like - Frank Sinatra, given the strength and beauty of his voice. Just listen to (not included here) Deep Purple, It's over now etc, you know what I mean. It's amazing he was capable of writing all these beautiful songs that hits your heart and punches you right in the stomach, even more than in the 60's. They're quite simple but at the same time complex, and it's a pity there are so many unreleased songs. Do we know who else is playing/singing on these songs? It's amazing, almost everyone thought Brian was lost forever, and then suddenly came his first solo album, followed by loads of amazing stuff, and most of all, something no-one thought would see the light of day: Smile!!! The stuff here, the Trinidad tapes, contains some of his best songs ever!! Thank you sooo much Brian for all this lovely music!!! ♥️👍🙏

"Don’t Let Her Know She’s An Angel" is a beautiful song, well sung by Bri, with some hesitations on the piano.
The intro to song within a song is from an earlier track recorded during the Sunflower and Surf's up sessions called "My Solution."
This is his "Hi, How Are You?"
1982 in La Habra junior year, bands in OC. Didn't know Bri was going through such a deep dark time. Rusty was doing everything possible to get on KROQ. So happy about the death of disco. So happy to hear and be part of all the creative music coming out. Thought B Boys were just regurgitating the same old formulas. No idea the trash happening behind the scenes. Not your fault Bri.
really beautiful stuff as always, brian

Song within a Song sounds like Shortnin Bread!

Brian tiene Melodías maravillosas en su cabeza
Oh Lord 2 is just so good
Someone else on the first song playing organ or piano - are we sure that’s not from the cocaine sessions with Dennis
I think at the six and a half minute mark there's something like a fancy casio and or linndrum from the time doing the rhythm comping and drum machine parts.
very good !!!!
I've been there, in another world of crap like that, not exactly like his situation, but the same thing. This is when I wrote my book and created a new form of painting then threw it in a box and threw it away. Wrote pocketbooks and hid them in the backs of blank journals and left them places for people to find unsigned. Then went into the dark forever, it's been 13 years, 15? More?
I wonder if "Oh Lord" (which later became part of Rio Grande) is somehow related to the fabled "Song To God"...
Song Within A Song sounds a lot like "Happy Days" from one of his later solo albums.
Song Within a Song seems to be the middle point between 1971's My Solution and 1998's Happy Days.
I remember this period so well. You had the really bad MIU album in '78, the attempt at some quality with LA in '79 (pretty much with the Dennis Wilson tunes and Good Timin', a Brian Wilson tune in the can since '74), then the wretched '80 album Keeping the Summer Alive, then nothing until 1985. It as obvious Brian had little to do with any of these albums. He was the benefactor for the group, the goose that laid the golden egg, and all of the leech members (Love, Jardine, Johnston) with barely any talent, expected that goose to keep laying eggs to keep them earning. The man wanted out. He wanted out since the fights over and subsequent shelving of Smile in mid '67. Brian finally got out a long overdue solo album in '88, but again, his "washed up has been" perception never really was removed. By '98, he resumed his solo career, putting out the great Smile finally in 2004, plus That Lucky Old Sun in 2008. In 2012, The Beach Boys reassembled for a 50th reunion and put out That's Why God Made the Radio, which also shows the modern Brian Wilson at his best. I remember hearing Don’t Let Her Know She’s An Angel in 1999 and thinking that's so Brian straight from the second side of the Today album. I love it.
Can hear the "Shortenin bread" in the "Song within a song"

I thought sweetie was even earlier since it turned into the song Mona on Love You released 1977.
