As an educational sciences student I LOVE that you always talk about the theory behind your tips. I believe the goal of learning about learning should not be to just get better grades or become more productive, but to learn more about yourself, how you function, and how to work with that in whatever situation possible. Great content as always!

My antidote to procrastination : "I'm in a better position to do the task right now than I'd be tomorrow, or a day before deadline." Creates a feeling of being at advantage at present and a fear of losing that. If you think about this for a minute or two, the resistance to start working will atleast be broken and the ease of sustaining a longer work time will increase due to endorphins released after the intial recall of being at advantage right now as compared to your future self. XD

Loving this style Justin, and the animations! Intrinsic motivation originating from identity has always been huge for me ever since reading Atomic Habits. Instead of saying "I am trying to quit smoking," I say "I am not a smoker." Instead of thinking "I am trying to get better grades," I say "I am a straight A student." I create my identity with my actions, everything I do is aligned with what a "straight A student" would do, and needing motivation becomes almost irrelevant.

    1. Low of motivation is a symptom of doing something you don’t have an inherent interest in. How can I change my process to make this task more interesting? 2. Identity - to one of a learner 3. Process - enjoy the process of learning. Change one small thing in the right change. 4. Break the cycle of motivation and no motivation by addressing root cause of lack of motivation -> intrinsic focus -> interest of process and identity Write down distractions, pre-study 15mins, find connections between things, process things before writing notes

  • @AmbiCahira

This is so incredibly interesting because you bring up stuff I relate to from stumbling upon it myself but with more "meat on the bones" why it is so. One way I motivate myself is new years resolutions where I pick that 1 thing I want to learn the upcoming year and it gives a deadline to complete the challenge like a limited time side quest. This year is the year of the tiger so I decided to learn how to draw tigers this year and I am so motivated lately that I started sketching when the urge woke me up at 4am this morning. Same happens with language learning as well. Most people remember language learning from school as the most tedious boring thing ever, especially grammar, but I am having so much fun with it that I study every day because it feels like a great book I can't wait to find out what happens next. It feels like an exciting exploration game where each little key you find unlocks new things. People say I'm so disciplined but I'm not, I'm engaged and interested. ^^

Great video! As are the two other videos I watched from your channel. Your work is very much appreciated. I would say the thing that demotivates me (if I even try to study before a test to begin with) is that I want to write super extensive super detailed notes and know all the details and do all the further reading. This, especially the note taking, is sooo draining and time consuming that it completely demotivates me to start. But since i want to perfect my studying, and really in all things in life i have this attitude of either i do it at a 100% or not even bother, in my mind this is how I do it. I’m also diagnosed with ADHD, so that coupled with being a perfectionist has left me in a mess, where the acceptable version of studying is unattainable and as a result has made me unable to study at allll all throughout my law degree, which led to anxiety and depression. I will definitely be applying the things you talk about while studying for the bar. Thank you for the videos!

This was such an interesting video! In one of my pedagogy classes, we talked a lot about how students tend to have intrinsic (but trainable) traits which correlate with performance like self-efficacy, self-regulation, and a sense of an inner locus of control while other traits like motivation acted as buffers to maintain student performance. I personally thought that there was a very fascinating relationship motivation, hope, and a track record of personal achievement to cement the ideas the student had around their identity and therefore their sense of their ability to perform (in class defined as self-efficacy). It's so cool that you providing such interesting and detailed resources covering this material.

I think this format does not make much of a difference because you either way talk about the content you wanna talk about. What I really like to see again are your study videos in which you take us with you on the road of learning. I always enjoyed it even if the topic didn't matter to me because seeing you and explaining what you do when you learn while learning gave me the most insights and helped me tremendously with my studying. So if I had a wish it would be more of the videos in which you study and explain how you conquer the topic. Thanks for reading

  • @JacobChencha

I love the format of your videos precisely because it's not just what to do but why it should work. I think there maybe some future in this kind of podcast type format. I however see as more complimentary than a primary way of presenting content. The reason why I see it this way is the questions coming from other presenters doesn't seem to be adding much value if they don't present their own point of view. It seems this could have been easily listed as an agenda. Still let this not take away from the content itself, I loved it! Especially the idea of moving motivation from being task driven to process driven, if you can find a way to make the very process of learning fun, it doesn't matter what you need to learn. Antony Metiveir has some really interesting ideas here as well. Thanks again for this great content Dr.

Like with any flash card system, Remnote is only as powerful as its use. Making cards on topics that were already beaten into your head is a waste of time and energy. The best thing you can do is use the cards to guide further study and research using external resources to better understand and personally connect with the topics they're struggling with until it "just sticks."

@@bakeral-sheyab546 It can be a great tool when you summarize the material in your own words and are able to make connections between different notes reliably to answer the kind of exam questions Justin talked about in the USMLE step 1 video. Keep in mind if your class focuses more on pure recall, remnote and anki are great tools in this regard, but if it's more so related to concepts, use remnote as a resource to create tables on different topics and make sure you teach someone else the concepts in your own words in the style of "explain it to me like I'm 5." I have signed up to be a part of your next intake of the iCanStudy course and I am so excited. I was hoping you might be able to address how parents can navigate their way through study? You address high schoolers through to professionals, but I would love it if you could give some thought on how to help parents who are constantly short on time and deal with many many interruptions. Keeping in mind that family always has to be priority number one, how do you make school priority number two but keep up your grades and continue to succeed? Thanks so much :)

Hmmm... So what are the things that people can utilize to make learning process more enjoyable on the things that they'd choose to study? I have an example- I've been "procrastinating" (or rather not even having real intentions on studying) for the driver's license. Most of my life I'd get by, I was never into the cars and all. It became a thing where I'd say "I don't really need to, things are close and sometimes if I need to go somewhere, I'd just take a taxi". And when I go to learn it, it feels hard in a sense that it's a book, everything is static and there are lots of rules to learn in isolation, so to speak. Lots of facts/sentences. So, the topic isn't something inherently interesting to me, and I don't really feel the need to do so (although I know it'd improve my life quality), and the way that I know how to study this is very dry (reading a book on the rules and just repetition so that it sticks to the head). Very boring and even quite hard. How can I approach it differently? Maybe there are ways of learning this kind of topic better so that it becomes actually engaging and interesting?

Willpower is something more static, and it resets when you sleep. The further the day goes on, the less willpower you have. It's the reason why a lot of tech CEOs wear the same clothes everyday. If they wear the same clothes everyday, its one less decision they have to make. Every time you make a decision, or have to force yourself to do something, your willpower 'battery' depletes. Designing our environment to align with what we need to do, whether it is studying or eating healthy, will allow us to not need to use willpower to avoid things that we impulsively want to do in the moment. For example, it's much easier to not buy unhealthy food at the grocery store, rather than avoiding eating it once it is in your house. Also, if you don't even own a gaming console at all, it's much easier to get to your studies because your environment is rather boring and the best stimulation you have is your studies. You should not wish for a stronger willpower, design and environment that doesn't require you to use willpower at all. Which honestly goes counter intuitive to the quote "Don't wish for an easier life, wish to be stronger." Making it easy for yourself has worked for me.

Hello, Dr Sung! Thanks for the tips! I do have one question: How can this be applied to non-learning aspects of life. To elaborate specifics: I am currently recovering from some rather *massive* depression issues, my house has been a pigsty for as long as I can remember and I cannot for the life of me get it in order (been actively trying for 3+ years). I cannot focus on *any* task, unless it is interesting or I have a figurative gun to my head. Every online questionnaire tells me ADHD is likely present and severe, but in my country it does not exist as a diagnosis in adults, so local professional help/therapy/medication are out of the question. I have had great success, implementing your learning techniques (because I was able to understand the fundamentals behind them) over the past year or so and I would love it if you can give any pointer whatsoever on how to translate that skillset to getting personal life affairs in order as well. o7

Hey I relate to your situation so I thought I would give you a few tips. Number 1 break it down into much smaller sections so clear 1 desk surface or clean the sink or toilet or some other small 1 thing that feels achievable so that you can see progress and results with less efforts. Instead of cleaning an entire room or entire house it's just a small section, any progress will look better and create motivation from seeing the improvement. 2. Use cleaning products that smells nice so you feel motivated to try it out! 3. Reward yourself. Allow a few squares of chocolate when the oven sparkles or something but give yourself rewards for succeeding! 4. Don't be hard on yourself. If your neighbor, family member or best friend had the same day as you with the same results what would you tell them? You'd say you tried your best and I'm proud of you for trying! There's always a new day tomorrow. Don't treat yourself worse than you would treat another human being. If you would feel forgiveness to another human then give yourself the same compassion if the day is a rough one. You've got this. 💜

When my place is a mess I like to make a I Have Done It list. I have paper, pen, and me. I close my eyes, open them, and the first thing I see I pick up. Then I find a place to put that thing. Then I write down that I need to move it. Then I cross off that I've moved it. The only thing my list has is things I've already done. The list cannot overwhelm me. The list is only positive. The list only shows the best of me. And I want that list to be long. So I keep cleaning.

therapy? what justin said in regards to "what stops your motivation" could also be psychological. if you want some videos without a big commitment i'd check out healthygamer (i'd say his explaining is similar to Justin). Short tip: Think about starting (don't actually start) and see what feelings/thoughts come up and write them down. Then try to work from there. If nothing comes up, actually sit and actually try to start and observe your thoughts/emotions. Good luck!

Motivation also has something to do with dopamine. So if you're suffering from a chronical illness like me it is literally a byproduct of the medicine I am taking: lack of dopamine aka motivation. It's not always that easy, sadly. I used to be extremely studious and now my lack of motivation is causing me a lot of trouble personally. I want to try harder, but there's like an invisible wall blocking me. I still try nevertheless.

Aren't games just an external motivator of a different kind ? it hits the dopamine , food or coffee ? Poster plays onto an identity , core ideal or a very important experience of ours to achieve that surge in chemical response.

If something's fun, it counts as internal motivation. For games to be fully external, people would have to dread the gaming process itself and only want the reward. But then again internal & external motivation can be mixed. It's not a dichotomy.
