    The swing thought that changed my game years ago was “right shoulder down, under, and through”. The down part assures that you’re not immediately spinning it out, over the top. The under part helps maintain the right side bend. And, most importantly, the through part gets it driving towards target, and keeps you from bottoming out behind the ball. I rarely “save” videos, but this one is going in the bank. Great stuff, guys.

  • @jamiesloan7259

    @jamiesloan7259

    @@pmaxerox People that swing the club “over the top” are missing the down part. They immediately spin the right shoulder “over” from the top of the swing, in transition. It almost looks like they’re trying to push the club to the ball. This gets the shaft standing up steep, and results in a very slappy swipe across the ball. The down and under are basically the same move, in a way. Thinking about it this way basically keeps me from reaching impact with level shoulders. You should feel right side bend through impact. This not only allows you to swing from the inside a bit , it also delays the release, and helps stabilize the face. However, just as they pointed out…. Without the through part(rotating towards target), you’ll be left stuck inside, and underneath, having to flip the hands at the ball. It’s a low-point nightmare. He demonstrates this perfectly, as he’s talking about what his problem used to be. This is honestly one of the best videos on KZread. They weren’t kidding about that. I just thought of a good way to describe this feeling…. Imagine that your buddy just bet you that you couldn’t sling your club completely through the drywall in your house, from ten feet away, using a golf swing. I promise you that you’ll sling it underneath, put weight into your left side, then apply the brakes with your left leg. You’ll also finish facing the target, with right side bend. I hope this helps you out, man. Let me know…

    Whenever I’ve hit it the best I felt on the way down that my right shoulder took the place of my left should at the top. So it feels through the ball as if my shoulder doesn’t dip and then shoots up. It feels level. We all have crazy different feels.

    The two most fundamental keys are the straight, locked in front arm and the trail elbow is kept close to the body on the downswing. Rotate the upper body around the spine and hit out of the hinge and everything else falls wonderfully in place. Here, you don't have to ever consider what is happening with the shoulders-they will naturally follow your best, natural swing plane...for whatever club you are using.

  • @TheRealByronBlanco

    Eric....I used to do this drill you have at the beginning, but I hated how it made me pull the club inside during the back swing. My normal backswing would always clip the alignment stick. It definitely helped on the downswing, but because I normally hinge my wrist a little early to ensure the club stays in front of my hands, it was a disaster of a drills. What am I doing wrong?

  • @CogornoGolf

    @CogornoGolf

    hey! Not necessarily anything wrong....maybe just need to find a different drill to accomplish the same downswing goals. I would need to see your swing to suggest WHAT drill that might be (can send to www.cogornogolf.com and I can help) its OK for takeaway to go more OUT.....SO LONG AS....it comes back down on plane well!

    This only works if you have the correct right wrist angle. Also, the right arm has to release during the down swing, terrible to try and hold angle which many people do. It's a good exercise but I think it's only scraching the surface.

    In previous videos, corgno has said it’s ok to let head move towards target (a little) in transition while moving trail shoulder down and towards target. And in the early part of the video Eric’s head moves like this when he swings. Later in the video (with the second drill) this guy tells him to have steady head? So which is it? I find a little head movement necessary to keep low point from being behind ball. Is this still ok?

  • @CogornoGolf

    @CogornoGolf

    Sorry about the confusion there 1. Yes....its OK to have the head move forward toward the target....it must. 2. But the timing (WHEN) is important 3. The head moves forward from the top of the backswing until left arm parallel in the downswing.....so only like the first 1/4 of the downswing 4. Then is STAYS THERE and doesnt CONTINUE to move forward.........thats the key.....it stays there......all the way through impact until arms parallel in follow through where it then releases to the finish We have some videos where I explain this in more detail if you do some digging. I think these are some: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hoGBpbOzY9HSndo.html&pp=ygUyRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGhlYWQgbW92ZWVtZW50IGdvbGYgc3dpbmcgaGVhZCBzdGVhZHk%3D kzread.info/dash/bejne/mpanqtp8Y8Wvp5c.html&pp=ygUyRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGhlYWQgbW92ZWVtZW50IGdvbGYgc3dpbmcgaGVhZCBzdGVhZHk%3D kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIWk08iieM7Zaaw.html&pp=ygUlRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHNoaWZ0IGFuZCB0dXJuIGRvd25zd2luZw%3D%3D

    Gotcha. Makes sense. I think this is the missing link for me - the shoulders (and head) moving forward/down during transition/very early downswing until arm parrellel as you said. I was always afraid of getting steep or sliding with this move but predictably I would hit behind ball or blocked out right. I think this move is what’s meant by getting the right shoulder “in the slot?” And “covering the ball?” This move puts right shoulder in line to fire at the target. Once in this position the head now serves as an anchor and the swing becomes more rotary although hips still extend to target. I will check out video links and appreciate the detail and quick response. Keep up the good work!

    Hi Eric, I want you know that your drill on how to lead with the right arm has significantly improved my ball striking. That being said, I still have a serious problem that is making me consider giving up golf: I'm a short knocker, and can only hit a 7-iron 140 yards. I'm 67 years old living in Florida and in good physical shape, but in the last 20+ years I've lost a lot of clubhead speed. My buddies tell me I have a good swing, but the good swing is not translating into more distance. It's very depressing to see tiny LPGA ladies hitting a 7-iron 15 - 20 yards longer than me. It makes me sick to the point I want to vomit. Here's one good excuse: maybe my clubs are not right for me. I'm hitting an old set of PING S57 with a stiff shaft. If I can't add another 20 yards with irons and 50 yards with the driver, I'm quitting golf. Where in Florida do you teach, and do you have a Trackman to analyze the swing and perhaps increase my length by 20 yards? I hit my driver fairly straight (most of the time), but I've lost approx. 50 yards in the last 20+ years.
