Imagine being a kid (like myself) and seeing this in a movie at the age of 12 and watching all your beloved autobots get wiped out in the first 10min of the movie, and then watching Prime die. Talk about messing with your emotions.. lol. Later on in life I had found out that Hasbro wanted to reinvigorate the toy line so they insisted on killing off all the G1 characters we'd come to know and love from the cartoon with new characters who were introduced in the movie. Also, people were so upset about Prime that they ended up bringing him back to life in the cartoon in S3.

FACTS. This movie looks and sounds amazing. The story is cool and it holds up. However, the studio underestimated our attachment to the characters, so it didn't do so well at the box office. "Arise Rodimus Prime" never fails to bring tears to my eye. After Optimus' death so early in the movie, it reinforced the idea that he might return, even if its just in spirit form a la Obi-Wan, and we got much more than that in Season 3.

I watched this in the theater as a 9 year old. This movie scarred a generation. The backlash was so big that they had to bring Optimus back in the show. Yes, Spike is Sam Witwicky from the Bay movies. The soundtrack is always in the workout rotation.
Kup's name comes from the fact that he is a (futuristic) picKUP truck.
Remember that the main premise behind the G1 Transformers series was to sell toys. The movie is essentially season 2.5 of the series. The reason so many characters were killed off/reformatted was to get rid of the 1984 and 85 characters in order to promote the 1986 toy line. When Hasbro decided to kill off Optimus, there was a MASSIVE backlash from fans. People were walking out of the theaters because kids were so upset by it and there were one kid who actually locked himself in his room for 2 weeks because of it. Back then, characters on cartoon shows didn't die so this was a huge blow. I saw the movie in theaters and I have no memory of it after Prime's death. To this day I still tear up even hearing the music that plays during his death scene.
Starscream: "Who disrupts my CORONATION??!!" Galvatron: "Coronation, Starscream? This is bad comedy!"
“Rumble. Frenzy. Ravage. Ratbat. Eject! Operation: Interference.”
Everybody hated Hot Rod for that, it's kind of why he failed as a successor to fans.

In the live-action film continuity, Spike and Sam are two different characters. The live-action film continuity version of Spike worked with the autobot Backfire. The impact that Prime’s death had cannot be overstated. Hasbro was not prepared for the backlash of their ENTIRE customer base watching their surrogate father murdered in front of them. It cannot be overstated how thoroughly and completely Hasbro failed to understand the level of attachment the kids of the 1980s had to the original set of characters in the show, which is why they insisted on using the movie to kill them all off to make room for their newest lineup of toys. Children were having emotional breakdowns in the theaters, and the show didn’t last past its next season.

This movie was animated by a lot of legends in the Japanese animation and manga industry. The most notable being Masami Obari, who is considered a legend among legend in the super robot genre to this day. His style of drawing mechs is instantly recognizable, which even led to the creation of the "Obari-Pose", a certain way a mecha holds a sword. and Obari is very deply tied to Transformers overall, he was the one who animated Optimus Primes very first transformation in the OG 1984 series, too.
Starscream's body was turned into ash, but his spark (soul) continued to be a pest even after G1. @@supercloudreed He must have died more than once because Unicron's severed head gave him his body back. I'm guessing the spark time travelled the same way the Maximals and Predacons did. The trans-warp.

@@joegiles7785 it was some time when i last watch Beast Wars. so i can not remember what fully happen with the spark back then.
Ironhide wasn't begging for his life...he still wanted a piece of Megatron. Oh, and *I STILL BLAME HOT ROD!*
Starscream is my favorite character specifically because I'd never seen that before. A second-in-command actively trying to take control from his leader? I thought it was the best.
U never seen this is criminal..the soundtrack is amazing
There is a sequel to this film. It's called "Five Faces of Darkness". It consists of the first five episodes of season 3. It answers a lot of stuff, including the repeated (innocent) call from the movie. There's a reason why the Quintesson judge kept saying, "Innocent."
I found it hilarious you kept referring to the Junkions as "Australian Transformers" when Wreck Gar, their leader is voiced by Eric Idle, a brit.
Also ironically its not till season 4 of the TV show, the kid (Daniel) gets mortally wounded. And to save his life The female Autobot Arcee agrees to use her head as a life support for Daniels body. And would go on to be known in a group of Autobots called the "Headmasters".
If no one's mentioned it, that wasn't an Australian transformer. That was actually Eric Idle, of Monty Python fame.
Thank you. You guys had so much fun with this movie. I was 12 when this was released. I had a bunch of autoots and a friend in my building had a bunch of decepicons. We had some epic battles.
Is it lipstick, though? Or is it automotive detailing paint?
Also, what came out during this time was the original Flash Gordon that was another awesome camp movie from my youth
FUN FACTS 1. In the Michael Bay films when Megatron comes back as Galvatron with the Transofrmium body, he's voiced by Frank Welker, the original voice of Megatron in the cartoon and Transformers: Prime. 2. The time it takes Unicron to transform is about how long to transform the toy IRL. 3. They killed off the first generation of toys to make way for the second generation, which is why they killed off Optimus and Starscream and why Megatron became Galvatron. In the G1 cartoon, because Hasbro had no idea how important Optimus was to kids (one kid locked himself in his room) they brought him back as a zombie. 4. Starscream died in either Armada or Energon (can't remember) and then cam back as a ghost in Energon, possible reference to this but also WTF

you are forgetting the he did go back to the time of Beast Wars before getting send away once more or was finish off for good.
Little did Hasbro know they made a huge mistake killing off half of the OG G1 characters 😂
Its revealed in season 3 of the TV show that the Quintessons were the former rulers of Cybertron long ago. The crime that the Autobots were on trial for was the crime of possession of stolen property... Cybertron itself. The Autobots were found innocent since they didn't live on Cybertron anymore, they lived in Earth.
24:58 Oh nice, you didn't skip the most iconic line in the movie
As an Australian, I absolutely love when Americans can’t distinguish our accents from an obvious British accent

I would recognize that voice anywhere it’s Eric Idol. They literally posted his name in the intro credits.
I remember when I started collecting Transformers. I used to drive my mom crazy because I’d take all of my toys apart to see how they worked and then put them back together so when a toy came out that was one thing but became another, I was all in and I’ve never stopped collecting. My only problem is, I’ve no one to leave all of these bots to when I kick some day. I saw this movie in the theatre first run and it blew me away with how awesome it looked, it freaked me out when they started killing all the bots I knew and then when Prime bought it, I just felt like the older sister in poltergeist when she comes home and the house is eating itself, what’s happening!!! Me sitting there with my bologna and cheese sandwich, a sandwich bag of popcorn and my bionic man thermos of apple juice. It rocked the toy franchise when they killed Optimus and the fans weren’t having it, it got so bad that they had to bring him back to life in the tv show cartoon and Rodimus stepped down because being the leader was too much for him to handle.I’ve got all the transformers from the movie and the tv shows and a few of the Bay film ones, not really a fan of his take on the franchise, love that you guys watched this. 👍🏽 A little side note, there are five dinobots but you only see four in the movie and Snarl the stegosaurus is never mentioned. The story is they forgot to put him in the movie but that’s really hard to believe but it’s never been explained. Megatron/Galvatron is a weird situation, they are supposed to be the same person but it’s kind of retconned in the comics but in the cartoon show, he’s insane. He literally loses his mind after Unicron dies because he knows he’s Megatron but he’s Galvatron, it causes mental instability between who he was and who he is. He ends up crashing on a barren world with lava pools and it causes a short in his brain. It was weird that Unicron had been gone so long from Cybertron that the Autobots and Decepticons didn’t know who he is, seeing as how they live on the surface of his brother. Primus is the creator of the transformers and he was so chill he created them and let them develop as he slept and became Cybertron, their home world.
I literally just got back from my local cinema who was playing a 40th Anniversary Special of Transformers. It was showing the first four episodes of the G1 tv show, and original actors came together for a chat and table read alongside the first episode while it played. This plays perfectly after all that, where I actually know the characters and can place faces to the voices. Love it!!
There is an alligator Transformer. He's a Decepticon Headmaster. His name is Skullcruncher.
This film is notable for being the on-screen debut of the female Autobot, Arcee. There had been several female transformers before her, most notably Optimus Prime's girlfriend Elita One, but Arcee would go on to become the most famous female Autobot and female Transformer as a whole. In this film, her vehicle mode is a type of car that was extremely popular with women back in the day (have NO idea what the make and/or model is, even though I've tried to look it up countless times), but later on her vehicle form would be changed to a motorcycle, and that's the vehicle form she has to this day. If you've watched the show Tranformers Prime, then you've seen what might easily be the most famous incarnation of Arcee.
An earlier draft of the script did have Hotrod blaming himself for the death of Optimus, and Kup reassuring him, but it was cut.
Kup doesn't turn into a cup. He turns into a picKUP truck.
