Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Train Now Departing documentary aired on the BBC in the United Kingdom from 1988-1989. This is the Sixth episode in the Series of 6, this episode details the history of restored steam locomotives in the years following the end of steam usage on British railways.
Apologies in advance for the vid quality on this one, the rip from VHS definitely caused some imagery degradation.

Ahh, what a lovely series this was, and how nice it's been to see it again for the first time since it was originally broadcast, when I was fourteen years old. Of course, the scenes of the 1980s railway are vintage and historical in themselves now, as so much has changed. The six episodes show so many interesting facets of the steam-age railway, and the efforts made to keep it going - I was very pleased to see my local heritage railway, the Bo'ness and Kinneil, feature in this show. I volunteer there myself these days, and it's been a pleasure to contribute to such a vibrant and historic place that brings so much joy to visitors. There's bit of a lump in my throat now.

Every time one of these old locos is brought back to life and restored to functioning order, that's one in the eye for Beeching. Those who restore these locos are heroes. They're bringing back history and making it live again. Kids today have the opportunity to get up close to, and ride with these locos as a result of the work of these volunteers putting in their time and effort to restore these grand old locos. Meanwhile, I hope they're using Beeching's photos as darts practice in their local pubs.

In Australia, events like Steamfest at Maitland, NSW and other similar events keep alive the steam loco experience. Sadly though, Covid-19 had cancelled 2020's events and those planned for 2021 are either delayed to later in the year, or they're scaled back.

@Aussie Pom Keeping fingers crossed(as well as toes, eyes and anything else LOL) We may see Steamfest return in 2022. 2021's event was put back to September but was then cancelled after the Delta strain of Covid-19 got out of hand due to the ineptitude and incompetence of the State Government in failing to deal with the Eastern Suburbs(Sydney) limo driver who had it and was contagious but the government failed to lock down the suburbs affected because it didn't want to "inconvenience" the snooty Eastern Suburbs silvertails.

Beeching was an employee of the true villain tory mp Earnest Marples. Who had a vested interest in motorways and road building projects. In the end he did a flit from the uk to avoid the HMRC tax demand and became a tax exile in Monaco. Nothing changes

So the Peak District railway as envisioned never came to pass? Looking at the Peak site there's only two stations Matlock & Darley Dale, which is sad, it's stunning up that way as you can see from the video footage.

In defence of Dr beeching, although at the time he was despised for his actions, history shows, that he was chosen, to do a job that nobody else relished, but had nonetheless to be done,we look back with nostalgic eyes on the days of steam, but in reality we were lagging behind most of Europe in terms of cost and efficiency although most people ,including myself loved the railways in. Financially they were bleeding the country dry ,after the cost of two world wars that cost was unsustainable,as an example I lived near Salisbury Wiltshire and as a ten year old I could ride the train from porton station to idmiston halt, both now sadly gone, for the cost of one penny ,,old money in 1959 sometimes I was the only passenger disembarking at idmiston,a public service yes,but totally inefficient. Again with hindsight we can see that mistakes were made, indeed he didn't get all his own way either..I believe that with the passing years people will realise, that the days of steam had to come to an end ,and non profitable lines and stations had to go,, and that Dr beeching was just a man doing his job, and all his decisions had to be approved by government at the time

I think you're right. I've actually studied the Beeching Report in depth, and much of the reasoning in it is sound. He's a convenient bogeyman for people nostalgic for the past, but doing nothing wasn't an option. The railways were losing an absolute fortune, and something had to be done to try and stem the losses and get the system back onto a sound footing for the future. He did the best analysis possible at the time, and was reportedly horrified by what he found, but the Beeching Report actually recommended investment in electrification, better inter-city services, and new methods of handling freight, like container trains (today's Freightliner network). If Beeching hadn't done what he did, when he did, it almost certainly would have been worse if it had been ignored or deferred (see the Serpell Report of the 1980s). Contrary to popular belief, the railways have never been a theme park for enthusiasts, and much as people may moan, they're now doing better than they've done in decades (or at least were before COVID came along), and Beeching did have something to do with that.

Beeching had to happen. If it wasn't him, it was going to be someone else. While I think we shouldve gone down the Irish route (close routes but leave the infrastructure in place so that, if required, reopening is fairly cheap to do, a lot of railways were making no money, duplicating routes that were more efficient, or otherwise unnecessary. And my favourite stories are the ones (apocryphal or otherwise) of the meetings where hundreds of people turned up to complain about their local line being closed, then having to admit that they had all driven to the meeting instead of taking their 'beloved' train. While it was very clinical and cold, it was ultimately the correct decision. Romantic as I am, and I would have loved us to have steam Locos running now in revenue earning service (which, let's be fair, the BR Standards really should have been, especially the 9Fs, had they been given their full working life), it isn't a financial or practical possibility. Still, love steam and everything about it.
