This is such a great film .I have loved it since I saw it on TV about 45 years ago when I was (relatively) young .This bit in particular is just so well done .The sound of the train itself is so just so good ,and when Labiche turns off the steam its almost as though an animal had died ,its last gasp before its put out of its misery. Also the casual way the hostages are shot ,making you realise however civilised you might think the Colonel is ,he is still a butcher .The discussion about art which is the culmination of the whole films premise which I suppose is ,what is culture and civilisation ,and what is worth sacrificing to protect it . Finally having watched Paths of Glory last night ,I suddenly realised the shot of the German officer driving through his men to get to the front of the convoy ,is like the tracking shot on POG where Kirk Douglas walks through the trench before he goes over the top .I wonder if it was a sort of homage? All I will say is that if you want to see a brilliantly acted /directed action film with a serious message ,you can do a lot worse than watch this .

This scene encapsulates the madness of Hitler, he only saw what he wanted, and didn't care how many died, or were executed for his dream. He probably would have been dumbfounded to know why the Allies fought him, and in this scene I can see Von Waldheim not putting 2 and 2 together when Labiche glanced at the executed men. He was too much in his own head to value the sanctity of the rule, thou shalt not kill.
