I can't believe I never saw this before. Great cast, and very interesting scenes for train lovers. It's always a thrill to see the French Resistance in action You don't have to have color film and high-tech special effects to have an exciting movie. This is now one of my favorite WWII movies.

This is such a great film .I have loved it since I saw it on TV about 45 years ago when I was (relatively) young .This bit in particular is just so well done .The sound of the train itself is so just so good ,and when Labiche turns off the steam its almost as though an animal had died ,its last gasp before its put out of its misery. Also the casual way the hostages are shot ,making you realise however civilised you might think the Colonel is ,he is still a butcher .The discussion about art which is the culmination of the whole films premise which I suppose is ,what is culture and civilisation ,and what is worth sacrificing to protect it . Finally having watched Paths of Glory last night ,I suddenly realised the shot of the German officer driving through his men to get to the front of the convoy ,is like the tracking shot on POG where Kirk Douglas walks through the trench before he goes over the top .I wonder if it was a sort of homage? All I will say is that if you want to see a brilliantly acted /directed action film with a serious message ,you can do a lot worse than watch this .

Crazy to watch the 4 minute trailer for THE TRAIN (1964) elsewhere on yt. It never mentions that the train is being used to transport stolen French art from France to Germany. It never even says anything about French art. The trailer just makes the movie look like your typical WWII action adventure film.

This scene encapsulates the madness of Hitler, he only saw what he wanted, and didn't care how many died, or were executed for his dream. He probably would have been dumbfounded to know why the Allies fought him, and in this scene I can see Von Waldheim not putting 2 and 2 together when Labiche glanced at the executed men. He was too much in his own head to value the sanctity of the rule, thou shalt not kill.

USSR: America! **America turns around** USSR: Here is your prize America, the greatest creation (Earth) god ever gave us. Does it please you USA? Does it give you a sense of excitement of just being on it? **USA says nothing ** USSR: The earth means as much to you as a string of pearls to an ape. You won by sheer luck. You stopped me without knowing what you were doing or why. You are nothing USA, a lump of flesh. The Earth is mine, it always will be. Beauty belongs to the man who can appreciate it. It will always belong to me or to a country like me. **USSR walks closer to the USA* * USSR: Now. This minute. You couldn't tell me why you did what you did. **USA turns around at all the bodies lying on the ground ** **USA turns back to the USSR* * **USA guns down the USSR with an M16 and walks away**
