The Tragic Life of Caroline Matilda of Great Britain, Queen of Denmark and Norway

Princess Caroline Matilda of Great Britain and Ireland became Queen of Denmark when she was married to King Christian VII of Denmark. Her brother, George III, was keen for her to get married to the Danish king in the hope that it would strengthen the alliance between England and Denmark. However, getting married to a king and becoming queen was not what Matilda imagined. Today we will follow her story.

Fun fact: I know that Matilda's son grew to hate Queen Maria Julianna because she tried to separate him from sister Louise. They had a very strong bond. In his own way, Frederick avenged his mother. Juliana wanted him to be her puppet, but he didn't let her control his regency.

It must have been terrifying to get married to someone you have never met, and leaving your whole life and family behind to move in with him at just 15! Talk about royal spouse roulette! I’m so glad that we’ve moved past marriages like that (for the most part). While marrying for love doesn’t always work out at least both parties knew each other and chose to marry each other. The idea of arranged marriages is just wrong. If I had married any of the men my mom had thought were suitable as potential son in law material I would have been terribly unhappy. Parents/stepparents/grandparents didn’t (and in some cultures still don’t) seem to care about the well-being of their child. It was/is all about wealth, power and securing political or social allies.

As one queen said to her husband: “Without me, you can have bastard children. Without you, I can have princes of the blood”. Therein lay the issue. With no way of proving paternity, a king could end up with somebody else’s child succeeding him on the throne.

I remember watching “A Royal Affair” starring Alicia Vikander (Queen Maria) and Mads Mickleson (Struensee). It broke my heart. King Christian was a total twit who derived pleasure from making Maria miserable. It’s now thought that he was seriously mentally ill. I don’t remember Queen Juliana Maria in the film although she could’ve been and I pay attention to her. Talk about following the Evil Stepmother archetype! I’m not surprised that Maria turned to Sturnsee for comfort and friendship. I would’ve too, especially if he looked anything like Mads Mickleson! As a descendant of a Danish grandfather and other Danish ancestors on both my dad and mom’s sides I found this story fascinating and supremely sad.

Caroline Matilda and Struensee's efforts influenced the American Revolution as well, and one wonders how history might have changed had they not been so reckless in their private lives. The movie about this queen, A Royal Affair is an amazing film, so well made. All 3 leads were terrific. Alicia Vikander as Caroline Mathilde, Mads Mikkelsen as Doctor Johann Friedrich Struensee, and especially Mikkel Boe Følsgaard as Christian VII. This was Følsgaard's first film and the role challenging, but he carried it off expertly, making the mad king someone you alternately empathised with, despised, pitied, and wished well. Nora Roberts wrote a lovely novel about Matilda's story called The Lost Queen, which was my first introduction to this intriguing piece of history.

The injustice of double standards is beyond frustrating no matter the era. I find the fact that men could be as debauched as humanly possible and emerge fairly unscathed, while women were reviled and scorned, whether the accusations were even true or not, to be disgusting and infuriating. If, by some miracle, time travel happens to be achieved in my lifetime, some old-timey a-holes gonna catch these hands, I swear to God...

You don't need to go back anywhere. This double standard is quit well and alive today. A recent past US president cheated on his wife when she has just given birth to their son. Had she said anything but "boys will be boys" and divorced him, her life would have been in jeopardy. Time will tell the final outcome of that debacle, but in general, the woman has been and will continue to be the villain especially in high social places.

I hold in high respect the attempts to introduce more freedom-like thoughts, reflektions, actions, etc. made by Mathilde and Struensee here in Denmark...I actually think that we are still fighting for all of that even though we live in/with modern stuff being led astray by our materialistic thinking and money-oriented behaviour...my hope is that we wake up and keep fighting through the use of the sword of love, not war. Through enlightenment and truthful behaviour in everything that we do and say. Many governments, organizations, institutions and others are still holding the power, however, very well kept hidden to the public....yet, in my opinion, we are witnessing in these years that the power is shrinking which makes these "power-holders" desperate and more and more cynical. I believe we are moving into better times, but we all have a part to play and if we are not united as an earth people, we cannot make real progress. So, keep asking questions about everything whereever you are in the world, YOU count too! Much love and support to all from Denmark! Thank you for sharing your videos:)!

@@aleasyah3032 William IV himself is a rather underrated king, especially taken the state of his predecessor brother, and it's true: Adelaide _is_ underrated. She lost 4 children prematurely (due to early death and stillbirth), but never mistreated her niece, rather taking her in. She donated money to the poor and payed for the building of a church and paving of a road. It's nice to see that her legacy is still lively (the city of Adelaide, Australia perhaps being the most well-recognized). Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, Caroline Matilda of Great Britain and Princess Charlotte of Wales, especially, despite being significant members, however, aren't much talked about today (as far as I know). I think that the mothers, wives and daughters of this house (Hanover) are often overshadowed by the scandals of their fathers, sons and brothers. Today, the Georgian era is getting its spotlight and hopefully, so will their queens.

I wonder how Victoria must have thought of her cousin. It's understandable why not many people understand the pain and pressure Caroline Matilda had gone through, if not all women of the past. It's easy to say that someone lost their parents/children, was unfaithful to etc... @@aleasyah3032 They would surely, that is, *if* Victoria was ever born given that Charlotte had never died in the first place. Generally, it is believed that the Edward, Duke of Kent, like his brother, had only married Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in hopes of fathering the heir to the throne of Britain. However, the marriage between Victoria's parents, may have taken place anyways. I had read an article on The Prince & His Lady where it was mentioned that Edward had a beloved mistress, Madame de Saint Laurent, who he had lived with for 27 years (or so, perhaps, I will need to recheck that article). He had lived a simple and temperate live in exile, but by the time he was returning to England, he was in a lot of debt. The debt had come possibly for losses in shipwreck and due to his lower income. He had realized that the only way to get rid of the endless cycle of debt was to get married to a noble-woman. So, he had to leave his mistress and look for marriage options. There it was written that this was being arranged even before Charlotte had died. However, I am not entirely sure about the authenticity of my sources, and I must admit, I have to look for the specific article I am sourcing from. But if that is the case, then they would have gotten along, in a reality which never existed. We know that the Duke of Kent was about 51 years old when he married the 32-year-old widow princess. I was first told that the marriages of both William and Edward occurred in hopes that it would produce the future monarch.

Sometimes they married girls as young as 11 or 12yrs. They waited until she was older to consumate the marriage of the husband was a gentleman. It is still normal for girls of 9 or 10yrs to be married in a lot of African countries also I think the same in India. So sad these girls have a short childhood.

@@livesandhistories It all started off with the fact that I commented on a video about John of Leyden -a 16th century Christian revolutionary who temporarily took over a city called Munster in north west Germany and I commented on the fact that Meyerbeer had written a grand opera about the subject called "Le Prophete" which contains a famous coronation march and a skater's ballet. You Tube then came up with other works by Meyerbeer and one of them was the "Struensee Overture".Grand opera in 19th century Europe was like Hollywood movies in the 20th century that covered all sorts of dramatic stories from the past.

This is the pop-smart feminine version of the story. Christian 7. was seriously mental ill. He was not a bad person for selfish reasons. His mother was Louise of England, aunt to George 3. who also was loonie. The danish Royal Family is one of the oldest in the World, and in such a family queens can not have love affairs, but kings can. It is quite simple, if a king makes a child with another woman you know where it came from. But you can not have a coo coo bird in the Royal Family nest. The english Edward 4.'s father was probably not his real father. His mother who was common nobility, got pregnant when the husband was away. Or else she should have been pregnant for 11 months.

This is the "romantic novel" version of the story of Caroline Mathilde. She was actually a wery sceming politician and worked active aside Struensee giving the new and for those days often extreme laws legitimacy. Infact the laws of Struensee and the queen at the end lead to oproar and at one occasion the royal family had to flee the royal summer palace Hirchholm, because at large mob of angry subjects where marching at the palace demanding the withdrawal of several new wery unpopular laws. The royal guard, whom Struensee had cut down to allmost nothing and striped of their honnors and lowered their salary as well, simply made it clear that they had no intention to protect the queen and Struensee but only the king and the royal children. Allso the queens behavior toward the mentaly fragile king made people angry, they felt she treated him like he was a cute but sometimes anoing little puppy, and she openly insulted him by flaunting the intimate relationship between herself and Struensee in front of him. The queen Caroline Mathilde was in 1772 no longer popular with the danish courtiers or the danish people and infact most historians now belive, that the coup of the dowager queen Juliane Marie rescued Denmark from a widespread revolte, by putting a stop to the most reforms and restoring the rule of "the good old days".
