The Tragedy Of The Untouchable Superhero Girl Trope

Фильм және анимация

Let’s take a look at the plight of the Untouchable Girl, how the limitations imposed upon her mirror society’s contradictory expectations of women, and the ways this trope has evolved into something surprisingly empowering.
The superhero genre explores otherness and how it fits into our world, specifically those with mutations and extraordinary abilities. But as we often see, having superpowers can come at a dire cost. This is especially true for those with uncontrollable tactile powers. They have to build barriers between themselves and everyone else. And until they gain some control, they’re a liability - often with little to no agency. And being a superpowered female with power incontinence adds another layer of unfair responsibility and oppression.

When can we see male version of this so much of this type actually fits men in real life. Especially with feminism. In media when something is passed down through the material line it's positive or should be seen as positive but if something is passed down on the y Chromosome it's negative bad . All to appease female audience and voters. Then age the Barbie movie success was a speech saying man problems like always having to have money but not being able to ask for money are uniquely woman problems and blames patriarchy for stuff Feminist fought and now. Elsa's parents advised her to "Conceal, don't feel" her ice abilities, which harmed her more in the long run, and she took those words to heart, even when she's rejecting them during "Let It Go."

TBH, I feel like people judged her parents (particularly her dad) too quickly and harshly; NO ONE has been in a magical situation like that, and royals put emphasis on image and being perfect, so they just give her the advice they know.

Exactly. Like the sad thing is just before the accident Elsa clearl had pretty good control over her powers too. And lets be real the accident was Anna's own fault Elsa clearly told her to slow down a couple of times before she hit her, i get Anna was a kid but damn girl calm the F down, you're clearly stressing your sister out. And then Elsa was the one held solely responsible for what happened. That part of the story always frustrates me. Like you see people who analyse the story and characters who claim Elsa was a bad sister for cutting herself off as if she had a choice in the matter but barely anyone ever talks about how it was technically Anna's fault and while she doesn't remember what happened she is never pulled on it and Elsa is left to shoulder all of the guilt alone. Like i get her parents did what they thought was best, but they legit just reinforced the fear and guilt Elsa was feeling. The Trolls literally said 'fear will be your undoing.' And the parents just reinforced the very thing she was told to be careful of. If i was Elsa i'd have kept the eternal winter thing going until i got a damn apology. 😂😂😂

@@natbatlightwood5288 Anna can't really be blamed because, as you said, she's a kid (probably around 5-8) with a sister with magic powers. She was still having egocentric thinking, so she couldn't really understand consequences. So it's not anyone's "fault," per se. I do think that Elsa being bitter with Anna over that could've been the origins for evil Elsa, though. And the parents lived in a superstitious kingdom, so they saw magic as mysterious and dangerous. Their only logical thought was to have Elsa ignore it--plus keeping your cool and maintaining an image is kinda royalty 101.

  • @iprobablyforgotsomething

    @iprobablyforgotsomething

    Ай бұрын

@@natbatlightwood5288 Well, yes and no; like @OpticalSorcerer said, Anna was just a kid, and thinking ahead to consequences isn't their strength. But her lack of heeding her sister's discomfort stems imo not just from her age and/or personality, but her parents consistently failing to properly (gently but firmly) discipline her with regards to listening to others and respecting their boundaries. Kids younger than her can and have been taught how to not stampede all over people like that. I agree that it would've made for a great setup for bitter, resentful "you never listen, Anna!" so-called 'evil' snow queen Elsa, particularly since having the memory removed meant Anna couldn't make amends (and know why she needed to improve her behavior) or let her to forgive Elsa while the two of them work past it. Thus was driven a wedge between them that to Elsa is understandably emotionally-fueled (making Anna's stressing her out the night of her coronation an even bigger no-no) but to Anna appears to have no rhyme or reason. Their coming to understand each other and what actually happened in the past, and how everyone (the girls, their parents, the trolls) played a part but yet it was ultimately not any one person's 'fault' *(though again, imo the largest portion of the blame goes to the parents, for failing to instill some discipline in the easily-excitable Anna and for failing to use their brains with Elsa and the trolls' advice)* that the misunderstanding about what caused the accident and how it should've been handled, warped their lives... that's way more than enough story right there. It didn't need a love subplot. A friendly fellow 'outcast in their own family' visting prince who doesn't want to lose his new friend Anna, and who tried to save her by killing her sister, would've been a just-fine plot-moving secondary story, if we keep Hans. It could've paved the way for a lovestory amongst two people who actually *knew* each other better, if the sequel still wanted to go there while Elsa and Anna grow into their sisterhood and solve a magic mystery.

There's a puritanical aspect of equating a girl's untouchability with virtue and sexual innocence. A noteworthy counterpoint being Rogue herself - when she was initially depicted as a villain, white streaks on the sides of her (short) hair and the way she was drawn, as an older woman, well into adulthood. And her powers were not a curse because she used them against people for her benefit. She was essentially the super-villain equivalent of a succubus. When they decided to make her sympathetic and join the X-Men, she was drawn as younger and the white hair was changed to be more fashionable rather than an indicator of age.

^ This . But also, even if we by chance meet someone(s) who have endless patience and understanding and for some reason really want to be in our corner rooting for us, we don't always find people at the right time in life. Like sometimes other people want to help, but are limited in their time, energy or ability. Or they have a sudden crisis of their own pop up, and that newly-developing friendship and/or found-family support network falls apart. Yet that doesn't happen in stories unless it's due to some misunderstanding or bad guy's manipulations.

The "Grimm" episode Heartbreaker also feels worth mentioning here. In it Nick encounters a wesen that appears as a beautiful woman but secretes a lethal poison whenever a sexually aroused man touches her. The women of her family deal with this by deliberately scarring their faces so that no man will want them. The episode stands as a commentary on how beauty can be toxic and how women are expected to be the ones to prevent sexual assault against themselves.

I think there's also a bit of commentary buried in this same discussion about women (and just people in general) who are voluntarily alone. Not alone in the sense of having no emotional connections, but just romantically alone. There are people who don't particularly seek out a relationship because they aren't driven to find one, and that's perfectly acceptable. I'd like to note that I feel like it's equally questioned in both men and women, so I don't want to isolate one gender here, but I just feel like it's a related discussion. It's a "forced isolation" in this topic, but along a similar thread is the story that's often untold about those who are alone and happy to be that way instead of miserable.

Ignoring the two who previously commented for a moment, I happen to agree with you. A lot of women feel this way for a myriad of reasons, and it often feels like you can’t win the mental battle of overcoming that. To address the two who did comment before me, someone saying that it applies to women doesn’t mean it can’t also apply to men. It also doesn’t mean “women aren’t touched”. That last one in particular is ridiculous lol and I think you missed the entire point of the dive into the trope if you think it’s as simple as that.

Felt WAY too close to the constant racist depiction of Black & Brown guys as oversexed animals more dangerous to women than their European counterparts are (even to women of colour). And what the touch meant to her. When she was a kid she hugged her parents before they went on a plane and the plane crashed, killing everyone on it. But right before she is about to kill herself, she meets someone who is Undead. Unable to die. It is the story of their romance and bid to try and be free of their powers. There is literally a side character in the story called Tatiana that has the power called “Untouchable”. She is literally the untouchable girl.

Massively. Girls are surrounded by images of women being sexualised but are told that if they look or act like that, they are bad. They're told to be pure, untouched and save themselves for marriage but also that if they get married, they're to be 'available' to their husbands at all times. Of course, if they feel pleasure at any time, they're bad because their bodies are just for their husbands.

Some historic context to add for Rogue is that she premiered in 1980 and was added to the X-Men's lineup in 1983. I've read arguments that her powerset at the time may have been a metaphor for living through the early years of the AIDS epidemic. And considering just how very queer coded much of Chris Claremont's 17-year-long run as the X-Men franchise's primary writer was, I'm prone to accept it. Her mutant gift draws a straight line between physical intimacy and harm to the people she comes into contact with. She almost always wears costumes that provide condom-like full-body coverage during an era when the GMHC was formed and started promoting safe sex as a method of prevention.

The untouchable women are far older than this. The whole "if you touch her you will be hurt" is far far older then superheroes and in the past was connected with the threat of rape, so the powers defended a women's body. In the legends of saints from from Roman times and the early middle ages there are stories of Pious Christian Women who vowed chastity and this was defended by god/angels, who harms those that touched them. St. Agnes and St. Cecilia are good examples of this trope.

This was so interesting and extremely enjoyable to watch (I love super hero media/ media that has people with super powers!) I also wonder what the male equivalent would be to this power -- like what is a uniquely male issue that is expressed in film/ TV through a specific super power? Or if there are super powers that are often tied with people of other identities -- i.e. black/ poc characters, gay characters, trans, etc. There's also a character from Extraordinary that is the only male example I've seen of this trope, I think. He has a power similar to the chick from Misfits, except if he touches someone -- or they him -- they get an orgasm from this.

Yea what is it about the misogynistic thinking, that "women can have sex whenever they want"(as an asexual woman, I really don't understand that phrase)basically was it referring to the misconception, that since women get sexualized earlier on(then they know everything about sex), whereas secondly don't tell me, what it means in misogyny's mind, is that it's code for the closest thing, to the concept of consent, Also :sigh: &on the other side, it's a given that the whole, women are taught to withhold sex, was related to finally teaching woman that their consent matters (considering that until at least after the 1970's, any man could get away with attacking women) &maybe because considering that for the last 80 years, the only info people had about women's sexuality, is that they're naturally repulsed by it(when in actuality did they even include women's sexual repression, that in actuality women actually have opinions about sex?)

Surprise that you didn’t mention how this trope works with villains too. One of my favorite depictions of this in a character, is Gabi the frog in Rio 2. Not only does she have the hots for the villain Nigel, but both are sadistically evil, in a very erotic way. Which makes it all the more ironic that she falls for him, but she can’t touch him as she thought she was poisonous. Yet surprisingly, this was what made the film, while not perfect, somewhat hilarious to watch, seeing her do whatever she wants for Nigel just to win his love.

Noticed when something is passed down on the y Chromosome like turning into a werewolf or saddar or Simpson gene witch is debunked in its own universe it's negative. Plus if lose you own free Will autonomy. And blamed for losing your free Will and called mysonygist for trying to gain automony as in free Will.

This makes me think: Isn't Rapunzel also not an untouchable Girl in some sorts, but in a sort of reversed way? She wasn't allowed to be her true self (her stepmother wanted to keep her hair for herself) and she was locked away from society. I find this a very interesting trope, not only because it's so relatable but also becaues it can be implemented in so many forms of stories, both in fantasy, the occult, science fiction as well as in real life stories.

Can somebody help me wrap my brain around, which woman gets the preferential treatment of "dignity"? Basically how is it that an "undesirable" woman can be looked at as a working equal & the "attractive" woman as influential? But in reality both get undermined and count as objectified (desexualization and oversexualiztion both carry very dehumanizing consequences with them)

FU. I wish women would 'dehumanise' me by lusting after me as a sex object. its like billionaires complaining that being rich is too stressful. being privileged does not make you a victim.

Although, as per the narrative since the Catholic Church persecuted women, indigenous people and other people that represented evil for them, those stories focus on how those with these special abilities might hurt others, instead of how having special abilities like sensitivity and “feeling too much” is actually more of a risk for the person who has them, and a more of a contribution to society, like the example of the psychologist at the end. That’s because it’s still viewed as a threat, the immense power it represents, and it doesn’t fit into our societal version of power that is more control than actual power. So the witch persecution is alive and well. Anyone who’s been gaslit, oppressed, or controlled in anyway for having such power and being different knows it.

How is this a trope when Rogue is literally the only character who actually is an untouchable girl because she could accidentially kill people by just touching them.

Interestingly enough, one of the forgotten characters that is like this is Ruby Daily from The Darkest Minds. She has powers of mind control via touch and can erase memories and at one point, she meets a guy like her. It winds up developing into a situation in which the guy feels entitled to her, and we find out he's been a villain the whole time.
