You definitely are a wonderful and insightful guide with every step you take. I find myself even more engrossed and enriched by China's culture during your walkthru's and interaction with the local people, especially when dialects clash. Here in the U.S., many people can't wrap their heads around the various dialects that differentaite Districts and Provinces ,yet your casual way of acknowledging complete strangers as a family member is such a striking and incredibly friendly way to show that we as a species are more connected to one another rather than separate . I've been to many places in China and love the land and the people. The ancient less traveled to places are the best. The people still practice simple living for thousands of years. Genuine loving people. I don't understand their language but feel as comfortable with them as I used to in my own grandmother's house 60 years ago. And now I'm a senior citizen. Born and raised in America but have always referred myself as a man without a country. Simply because I don't like the way America does things anymore. Me and many others my age have witnessed America went to Hell in a hand basket. And many places in China still hold the traditional ways of life. Many of the best things in the world are made in China. These people put America to shame. And I'm delighted they still exist!

Hi Yan. Thank you for showing us more of Anhui, specifically how calligraphy paper continues to be made today since Cai Lun invented it, and the village of Hong. I am impressed by your knowledge when you were expounding upon Hongcun and then I remember that you are a geographer. The rich man's house is replicated in the nineteenth century but with less grandeur in British Malaya and can be seen in the old settlement towns of Melaka, Penang and even in Kuala Lumpur. It is a privilege and a pleasure to watch your well crafted videography. By the way your father is so supportive of your social media calling. And true to your Chinese culture you refrain from asking your audience to like, subscribe and comment on your videos, so I shall do it for you (although I am Chinese). By doing these three things, will the KZread algorithm pick up your videos and post it to a wider audience. So, I shall continue to support your work by forwarding your videos to everyone I know.

You are not a KZreadr you are a documentary filmmaker. Great mix of fascinating information, historical perspective, personal experience and scenic drone all nicely edited.

Modern Chinese calligraphy is the pinnacle of civilization. It's the most beautiful of all the written languages.

Very beautiful video. I really had no clue about the paper and how it is made from tree barks. So many people involved just to make one sheet of paper, that's so impressive. When I watch 仙侠(Chinese historical fantasy drama), they often have beautiful calligraphy shootings. I studied Japanese and my Japanese friends told me that they could tell a lot of things about the writer just by observing the calligraphy. It was like modern finger prints😁. Water is life, having clean water going through a village is such a blessing. In Italy, despite being such a small country, there are many dialects too, in fact people cannot understand each other if speaking a different dialect. However, as nowadays Italy is a very multicultural country (many people from Africa and Eastern Europe live there), dialects are only spoken in remote areas. My mother was born on Sardegna Island (famous for its crystal clear sea water) and my father was born in Calabria (South Italy), their dialects are totally different and they only speak Italian. My father was sent to Sardegna for his military service, he fell in love with my mum and they moved to Milano (Roma is the capital and Milano is the business capital of Italy. I cannot imagine how far people in China can travel to meet their family and friends. I also love Traditional Chinese Medicine so please show us some interesting stories about that. My last wish is to learn more about folk tales. For example in 仙侠, they often speak about animal spirits that can shapeshift into humans. Where do such legends come from? In Europe we also have many magical creatures, witches, etc. according to folklore but in real history, since the Christians took over Europe (they had an army), they declared the inquisition where countless women and men were tortured, killed and sometimes burnt at the stake just for living a non Christian lifestyle, knowing herbalism and magic healing. Italy, Spain and France according to history, were the places where most atrocities were committed. Before Christianity, the most spread belief was paganism. Interestingly, nowadays herbalism, traditional medicine and other holistic approaches are back, more popular than ever and backed up by science. Thankfully, religions no longer play the role of authority and most young people cannot accept their Conservative views.

Hi, Lux. I think the idea of animal spirits that can shapeshift into humans is from Taoism. The concept is both ppl and animals improves their mental and physical strength through self-cultivation. Humans can be an immortal and god by self-cultivation and surviving from a dozens of trails from Tian Dao (the rule of nature/universe/heaven), usually Thunder Punishment. Animals can cultivate themselves into spirits as well. The reason why they want to be human is because human is considered to be favourite of Tian Dao.

Thank you! I was really impressed by the Legend of White Snake. Snakes are considered evil by default in the West, in the bible it is a snake who convinces Eve to bite the forbidden fruit but in White Snake, doctors use them to make medicine. Animal spirits are translated as demons in English in most xianxia dramas but in the West, demons are always evil while spirits can be good, evil or neutral. I thought there was a problem in the translation but in The Legend of Chusen, the daughter of the Demon King and one of her followers (Dog) are really kind hearted. Interestingly, celestial beings can get pretty nasty and vengeful. That was an eye opener for me.

Calligraphy can showcase a person's cultivation. China says: characters are like humans, like Chinese characters, and should be square and upright, not skewed. The floating pen is a manifestation of inner restlessness. Japanese calligraphy comes from China, so there is the same reason. Your teacher is very good, and this is everyone's first lesson in calligraphy.

I’m a new fan of your videos having only discovered you last week. I’ve been to China several times but you show me that my travels have only just begun. Such an amazing country and people. Seeing that paper production was the best thing for me. When I was in Japan I learned calligraphy, and I love paper and brushes. Seeing so much amazing paper and beautiful brushes makes me want to get back to it.

Hi Ms Yan, I am a Malaysian and I worked in Xikou(near Xiuning) for almost a year. Yes , it is a very small town but I enjoyed it while I was there in 2014. It is a pity I could not stay there much longer than I wanted to. I visited Hong Cun and another old town nearby but I have forgotten the name. I am looking forward to visit China again.

Yup, good video n alot of hard work in editing. One point to point out, excellent drone filming, looking at the buildings structures, plus fengshui adaptation, those builders were classic architects, can beat the present day college trained architects.

The fact that you even travelled with your dad :') it warms my heart

Huangshan is simply awesome! We stayed overnite at the hotel. The buffet breakfast was really good. The hike down took us more than 6 hours. I was limping but I made it and it was like winning a race. We also visited Hongcun. It was just so-so for us. We prefer Huangshan and also Jiu Hua Shan.

I cannot get enough of all your videos. I love them. And you are such a good presenter. Thanks for your efforts and great work. China is such a fascinating place that bridges antiquity and modernity. I sincerely hope I get to visit China at some point! Is it difficult for a tourist that doesn't speak any of the Chinese languages to navigate the country? .

This is the second video that I watched with China’s mainland as the subject. I enjoy it immensely with the information given. It is easy to get totally involved with it. I am impressed with the easiness the subjects being documented. Also have a renewed appreciation of the people of china, which are many and from many diverse backgrounds. I enjoyed and love the easiness, the willingness and the openness of all the persons that appeared in this video. Can not wait to travel to china again. 我去了黟县两个星期，前两天刚从宏村写生回来，我去了黟县的很多地方，也去爬了黄山，吃了臭鳜鱼和毛豆腐，很喜欢当地的文化。回来时我还买了点黄山烧饼和一罐祁门红茶。不得不说，祁门红茶真的很好喝。❤

paper made of tree barks and rice stalks are highly acidic, it would become brittle and fall apart in less than a decade. Xuan paper goes through different process to make it acid-free so it can last hundred of years. you can find painting or calligraphy dated back to Han Dynasty.

My wife, brother in law and a friend spent a couple days climbing Huangshan mountain, we spent one night in a hotel on the mountain. Amazingly beautiful even though it was raining/drizzling most of the time. Very difficult hike, my phone said I climbed 67 flights of stairs one day, my wife and I are 73 so we did struggle a bit. But it was totally worth it, as the views and the camaraderie of our fellow tourists was wonderful. That part of China is very lovely, and though there were many tourists, I did not feel like we were just someone to be fleeced by the locals, but that instead they welcomed us and were happy to share their part of the world with us. Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy them, and enjoyed watching your interactions with your dad. Be safe

I really appreciate the nuggets of information and the systematic presentation. It's like watching a leisurely documentary presented on a personable level. The facts of the round table being separated until the family is reunited was never known to us. We even have one of those tables that can be separated into two halves. Never knew it carries that meaning.

What a great video, Yan. Your narration is so good, how well you convey all the interesting information and hold our attention with your storytelling.
