    I've been hunting deer with percussion for 30+years and aside from the load in the gun I'll carry 2or 3 speedloads (I like the T/C best)in shirt pocket and a belt knife and pocket knife , flashlight to get in and out and stay off of snakes , a piece of rope for a drag if I get lucky . Just about every thing can fit in my pockets .

    When shooting in N-SSA matches I always go to the line with a few extra items that most competitors don't. We have a rule that if your gun fouls out or fails to fire, you can only use items with you or your team mates brought to the line. I keep a nipple pick ran down through the threading of of my cap pouch, along with a few screw on attachments that fit my ram rod end that I threaded a while back to include a patch puller and breech face scraper. I also keep a small pan primer with FFFg and nipple wrench/ flathead screw driver to be able to place some FFFFg in the flash channel to help the percussion cap on a slightly dampened main charge in case someone forgot to completely dry out their bore before hand and the snapping caps didn't do the job. Last but not least, I carry either a multi tool or a pair of needle nose pliers somewhere on me, especially during carbine matches, in case a knife or pair of pliers are needed to remove a stuck smith or maynard case or whatever might be needed. My hunting setup is very similar depending on which gun I carry afield. My Brown Bess possibles bag includes very little since I generally use a shooting block to carry my extra .690 round balls but rarely need them because I make up paper cartridges for both my buck and ball loads and my bird shot loads. My cartridges are made up by forming a cylinder that is about .705 dia and glue up one end flat. After it dried I place it in a hole I made in a block of of 2x4 that has a .710 hole in it. I place my over shot wad in the bottom, then either 4 0000 buckshot with enough filler of grits to fill the gaps in, or just place my load of bird shot in. Continuing on my buck and ball load, I then place my pre lubed with hard beeswax lube, .690 round ball in. I fill the sides in with filler until the ball is just barely visible and then place a 1/4 cork wad with just a touch of glue to keep the powder and shot seperate. My bird shot rounds get 2 cork wads and then both get a final over shot wad before I put in my powder which is usually around 50 to 90 gr of FFFg or a charge of 60 to 100 gr of FFg depending on what I have handy. I then tap the powder down to get it as level and compacted as possible, then fold the rest of the tube in a fashion that makes a tail then glued down after folding it down back on itself to have the tail run up the side of the rest of the cartridge. I often forego the over powder wads because when I open the cartridge to drop the powder, the remaining paper from the cartridge is just shoved down the bore and acts like an over shot wad instead. I have in the past made up just round ball cartridges using a naked ball pled on top of a pre lubed 1/2 inch felt wad and emptied the cartridge down the bore and then shoved the entire empty cartridge down the bore to act as an over shot wad.

I keep bare minimum, square tin hold my lubed patches, balls hang loose in the pocket, another small tin holds my cleaning bits, a small pack of alcohol swabs for cleaning the barrel out. I prime from my main charge, I carry only one horn. A little tip I picked up from Mike Belivue on here the swabs you can score from wally they are used to clean injection sites for needles. Works wonders and portable, lightweight. Let's see that smoothie@!!

    For my inline muzzleloader in my possibles bag I carry the following while deer hunting. 2 or 3 reloads, small 209 primer holder/loader, a small amount of cleaning patches, a T handle bullet starter and my gutting knife. I have always wondered if I needed more. It looks like I don't even need to worry about a ratchet wrench for my breach plug and Allen wrench & punch to take my gun down with me. It looks like I need a smaller bag. What I need to down load is my day pack.

    But..but...but...I like my big bag with a million pockets! Great information. Been shooting back powder for years, and it never occurred to me to keep a small oil bottle in my pouch. But it makes sense. You always learn something new. I'll say that for my own preferences, a larger bag with some extra pockets makes organization easier, in part so I can get my hand in there without fumbling around too much. But even so, it's all about keeping things simpler. More stuff can be fun, but there is a balance, and you illustrated that beautifully.

    I like this video on down sizing the amount of things to carry I am in the process of making my own style of possibles shooting bag from leather and other materials I have the leather and habe made the shoulder strap but I am making it with a 3 inch gusset. And I am wanting to line it with florsent orange ripstop material I have fabric adhesive to glue it on the inside of the parts of the bag befor sewing together also sewing in some elastic loops to keep most things organised but I am having trouble figuring out how to cut a beaver tail top flap I am a firm believer in repurposing different things when ever possible I am making this bag for deer hunting with .50 cal muzzle loader cap-n-ball. I'm really digging that patch knife! Any info on the maker or where you got it? My shooting pouch is filled VERY similar to yours personally. I use an old straight razor that had about 1/4 inch chipped off the end of the blade for my patches. I ground it back mostly straight and added just a very small point for poking. It works very well for my purposes. Your patch knife just looks great though. All good advice here and you confirmed all the little tricks I learned over years of shooting. I started out with a backpack for my supplies 😆. That got old quick. After 2 or 3 trips into the woods I was down to bare bones, just what I NEED. I'm subbed for more. That was an absolutely beautiful squirrel rifle you showed as well! Thanks for the well presented and informative video!

    Alexis Lisiak Thanks! That one was made by a CLA artist, I’ll get you their names when I get to the house this evening. I’m sure their last name is ‘Gier’. They can be found on the Contemporary Longrifle Association website and Facebook. Handmade/stitched from bark tan leather based on an original.

    This is great advice. let's take it a little further. In the period if one has a rifle OR a fowler, that was it. Why do we own 4 rifles 3 smoothbores, ten horns 8 bags etc...? Just sayin.

    Hey Deli, most of my bags and stuff are handmade by CLA artists. Check out the Contemporary Longrifle Association website and Facebook. Also most of them hang out and sell stuff on the American Longrifle Forum.

    Hello sir. I am new to shooting and I have a question. Do you shoot the same powder that is used for priming? Is that fffp? Does pyrodex work? Thank you!

  • @BlackPowderTV

    @BlackPowderTV

    Hello! I use ffg or fffg for shooting and ffffg or 0b (which is very fine like dust) for priming. Pyrodex works ok for percussion guns but not so well on flintlocks. Watch my ‘new shooter series’ for more info on that. Feel free to ask any questions at all! Thanks!

    @@BlackPowderTV yes sir! I've been watching and learning a lot. I do have another quick question. I'd like a Kentucky long rifle but would also like to use loose shot. Is loading a rifle with shot an okay thing to do?

    messy shop videos You don’t want to shoot shot from a rifled gun. As the shot is fired the rifling acts as a file sheering lead from the shot as it flies down the barrel, fouling your rifling and bouncing the shot all over the place. I’d get a Smoothbore. Accurate to 50 yards with ball as well as able to shoot shot.

    Michael, I’d look at the for sale section of Americalongrifles.org or on the muzzleloading forum. Many nice bags for sale in both. Americanlongrifles members make lots of handmade bags in all price ranges and offer them for sale there. 👍🏻

    Kept most everything I needed in a bag about the size of a clutch. If you do not know what a clutch is, look up women’s purses. Since I went to black powder revolvers, I keep most everything I need in an old Maxwell House coffee tin. The contents: 2 pounds of powder, a tin of percussion caps, a bore brush, pencil, small knife, nipple wrench with pic, cloths pen, 3 percussion cap loaders, medicine bottle full of slugs, spare nipples, and a tablet of paper. Can substitute a jar of bore butter for 1 pound of powder if needed, or just use an old purse with pockets if I need more space.
