The Toyota Camry & Avalon Hybrid's Are Fuel Efficient Sedans That May Outsell The Prius

Shoutout to Tommy Mica from ‪@TFLcar‬ for helping us with this video and for joining us in this comparison test!
The #ToyotaAvalon and #ToyotaCamry #Hybrid are two of the most fuel efficient midsize sedans in America and together, they outsold the #ToyotaPrius which #Toyota sold just under 70,000 units in 2019. While the #Prius barely wins the MPG race, with the #CamryHybrid getting up to 52 MPG and the Avalon up to 43 MPG, they both offer up very similar efficiency to a Prius but wrapped in a design that looks like a normal car.

Good evening guys! This is a comparison we filmed back in Oct 2019 with Tommy from The Fast Lane Car, we filmed this BEFORE we drove the Avalon and Camry TRD which both of those videos are already posted so please click on the link in the description if you want to watch one of those. While Toyota does not disclose sales figures of the Camry and Avalon Hybrid's on their own, in 2019 Toyota sold about 336,000 Camry's in America and about 27,000 Avalon's. In contract, Toyota moved about 69,000 Prius's, do you think both of these two hybrid sedans outsold the Prius last year?

According to Automotive News US vehicle production chart in their Jan 20 issue, 2019 Camry Hybrid total production was 29,993 and Avalon Hybrid was 8,233. Assuming only units assembled in US were sold in the US, that’s about 38,000 units sold in US.

I got the Avalon Hybrid Limited as an upgrade from my old Corolla and I love it. It’s a smooth, quiet ride. Really comfortable to drive and passengers always comment on how comfortable they are, too. It’s got a lot of safety features, the tech is easy to use, and it’s easy and inexpensive to maintain. The only thing that makes me a little nuts is that if I’m pulling into a steep driveway, I have to remember to creep or the bottom of the car will get scuffed up. The front also looks like a whale about to eat some krill. Otherwise, best car I’ve ever had.

"...We purchased the Camry for $26,968 and traded it in for $13,000, about 2.5 years later and with over 42K miles on the odometer. These miles were well above average and affected the Camry's trade-in value. That said, we could've easily gotten a few grand more on the private market if we would have sold it ourselves. Profit versus convenience is something owners have to decide for themselves. It ultimately equated to 51.8% depreciation. However, it is difficult to compare this outcome directly to the result for any other long-term car because we typically keep a long-termer for just 12 months or so. Edmund's longterm

I can cruise on the 15 on my way to Vegas at like 85-90 in absolute silence with the buttery smooth ride quality it’s like floating on a cloud. Not a single rattle or vibration and the V6 is absolutely bullet proof and buttery smooth and quiet. I bought it immaculate condition with 180,000 miles on it and now I have 230,000 and it’s literally brand freakin new. Immaculate condition inside and out and I pamper it lol. It’s fully loaded with all the bells and whistles. I love love love the power rear sunshade at night when people are behind you with the headlights shining in. Also it’s got the sport or comfort suspension button, voice controlled navigation and touchscreen infotainment system that works flawlessly and is easy to use for me. Mark Levi son premium audio system sounds SUPERB! The 17 inch 6 spoke chrome rims look very attractive. It also has heated and COOLED front seats still working flawlessly. I converted all the turn signals to LED and put in the relay so it doesn’t hyper flash and that’s it. Best car ever I’m never gonna sell this beautiful car

Camry dash design? Reminds me of a 1930's Flash Gordon movie serial spaceship. The Avalon grill? Obviously derived from Big Mouth Billy Bass. Not familiar? Try Google. As far as a comparison between the two, I suspect the Avalon and Camry aren't cross-shopped very often. The Camry has stiff competition from the Accord, the Mazda6, and most recently the new Sonata along with others.. The Avalon, on the other hand, is in a very small and shrinking mainstream "full size" category that (off the top of my head) includes Nissan Maxima, the aging Chrysler 300 and the KIA Cadenza. Not exactly serious rivals. Personally, I'd take the Honda 2.0L turbo Accord or the Mazda6 (Signature) over the V6 XSE Camry. But if I were shopping in the full size category, the Avalon takes it.

  • @h011yw00d

I love Toyota Camry's because they sell so many, you will always have access to inexpensive parts and Toyotas have reliability compared to european and american cars. I decided to avoid hybrids because the batteries just add more for you to be worried about when it is out of warranty. If the batteries go bad, you're looking at 4-5k to replace them. Whatever you save in gas in the end becomes a liability and people considering buying the car when it has 100k plus miles will hold that against you (even if there is a warranty to 150k or 10 years). I like the Avalon's limited interior, it does look nicer than the Camry. I would go with an XLE Camry so it has all the luxuries --- leather, nav, sunroof, V6, smart key, push to start. It's pretty much a Lexus in luxury but way more reliable since there is more access to parts.

The Camry XLE hybrid is better because of that 360-degree camera. Very long and intricate explanation into why that camera's so important, but if you knew what I know, you'd get the XLE hybrid (a Model 3 with the Full Self Driving option would be better from a depreciation perspective), or just keep what you have.

Due to peoples love of SUVs large sedans like the Avalon are not selling. You can easily get 6 K off MSRP which is great for and old fart like me. Thinking of trading my Crown Vic for an Avalon. Plus my favorite old fart song is Avalon by Roxy Music. Can’t lose.

My 2019 LE Hybrid Camry get's 54.2 MPG.. been up to 55mpg..but hasn't gone lower than 54mpg since i've owned it...way better than any Prius.. was thinking of getting the Avalon..that gets 43mpg...but i'm sure i could squeeze a little more out of the Avalon... Avalon Hybrid almost 40k..vs Camry LE Hyrbrid..28k...Hmmm...If you got the Money..Go for it..if not get the Camry..I love mine!!

FYI you cannot get a pano roof on any Avalon. Plus the Avalon has real wood. And you can’t get parking sensors on the se. plus the XLE hybrid Camry has soft rear doors.

2:55 - AVALON is the FLAGSHIP in Toyota's USA / North American Lineup.. Japan / Asia has the awesome TOYOTA CROWN, TOYOTA MARK X .. and a whole bunch of Lexii that used to be Toyota's (CELSIOR, etc).. and whatever that presidential Toyota was... The equivalent of the Rolls-Royce

You're talking about the Toyota Century. Toyota doesn't intend that vehicle to be sold in export markets and built it primarily for the Japanese government. If you wanted a Toyota Crown, you can consider looking at the Lexus LS or LC which both use the same chassis as the new Crowns. The Crown is near equivalent to the Lexus GS, but is slowly being phased out. The reason Toyota used so many names for the Lexus vehicles like the Celsior and the Windom was because Toyota didn't introduce the Lexus brand to Japan until 2006.

Now that the updated Camry is out. This Avalon centre console design looks way better than the Camry, which looks after-thought. Pre-lift Camry centre console was much needed but somehow Toyota screw it up for the facelift model. In the end, it's Avalon for me anytime.

In the 2019 model, the Camry SE and XLE models came with NiMH batteries versus the Li-ion battery in the LE model. In the 2020 models, they all have Li-ion batteries according to the Toyota website. Each battery type has their pros and cons but I believe Li-ion is better. Why they gave the more expensive models the cheaper battery doesn't make sense. Anyway, they fixed that difference. Can someone confirm?
