The Tour of Florida School for the Deaf & The Blind (FSDB) Produced By Students!

"The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB) is located in the nation’s oldest city of St. Augustine. Established in 1885, FSDB is a fully accredited state public school and outreach center available tuition-free to eligible Pre-K and K-12 deaf/hard of hearing or blind/visually impaired students.
Currently, FSDB serves about 600 students on campus in Pre-K and K-12 academic programs, as well as about 400 infants and toddlers and their families across the state of Florida through Parent Service Programs." -www.fsdb.k12.fl.us/index.php/a...

Apparently, in the entire state of Florida, this is THE ONLY school of its kind (at least that's what I hear from different low vision organizations here in FL). AS depressing as the actual statistics are surrounding visually impaired people, and as unefficient the entire infrastructure is that supports the visually impaired, I have a great deal of appreciation for your work. I'm a PhD student here in florida, who is legally blind. Let me know if I can do anything to help.

There's not a need for another. It's open to all students statewide for free, with Free transportation home and back on the weekends if you're not in the county. This school has roughly 1 thousand students, likely less, so it's not even at capacity. That's not to say deaf and blind education doesn't need improvement in the state of Florida, but it needs to exist in a better manner in the public schools.

@@nunyabusiness6450 i’m sorry to say this but I severely disagree with you. From the latest numbers that I see the number of visually impaired students in the school is I believe less than 500. And the state has about 50 or thousand visually impaired people between the ages of five and 17 or something along those lines. My research dealt specifically into how to improve education for the visually impaired and this is one of my areas of research so I know what I’m talking about. But I would love to hear from other visually impaired people as well and other people Who are somewhat experts in this area, because like I’m learning through the hardest lesson of life again and again, one person cannot do this alone. Also, the plied for the people with disabilities and especially those with visual impairments is one seldom focused on, and the inefficient system is been repeating the same procedure for decades and it needs to change now! If I were to be successful in my research endeavor, a.m. to one day solicit or should I say bring about this change. This is why progress for people with visual impairments is the slowest amongst all other groups as stated by a person who spoke at Harvard I forgot his name but he is also somewhat of an expert in this field works with visually impaired people all around the world

@@TheBengalDragon ah, I understand where you're coming from. I think I mistyped what I was trying to say. The educational facilities and instruction of those with disabilities needs to be improved upon a great deal. The FSDB model though, while the best school in the state for those who are visually and audibly impaired, isn't a very effective model due to its outreach. It's open statewide, and the school itself has yet to reach capacity. If Florida state wanted to assist these students more effectively, they should allocate more resources to the disability departments in local schools, as that's where the majority of impaired students are receiving their education.

@@nunyabusiness6450 in my opinion the first thing they need to do is move it to a population center. The school is in Saint Augustine. I don’t think Saint Augustine is a population center like Orlando or Miami. As for the system, let me just give you one statistic. It is reported that over 70% of working age adults with visual impairments are not employed full-time. Let that sink in. More than seven out of 10 visually impaired working adults don’t have full-time employment. This is the outcome of the current system and that is one of the greatest reasons it needs to be improved immediately

@@TheBengalDragon true, not everyone goes to the blind school in Florida, but not every blind student needs to go to the blind school for the duration of their childhood. If they live in a poorer area where the regular schools suck worse than the average suck level of Florida schools, then it’d make sense for them to go to FSDB. However, FSDB is still one of, if not the best, blind schools in the nation. I am a former student at FSB, the blind side of the school. Back then, we had Kramer Hall for Blind elementary and middle school, the Old Bryant Hall for the Blind High School, and young Mr. Crozier was the blind elementary/middle principal while his father was the principal of the blind high school. A lot of the teachers have retired now, like Mrs. Castile, Mr. Worthington, Mr. Parker, and 3 of the Braille teachers have also retired, although one of them won the National Braille Teacher award in 2007-2008 school year.

I love fsdb! I actually graduated from the school in 2014 and I want to study to become a braille preschool teacher and go back an work at fsdb. Fsdb is my second home. This is where I lived in the dorm and made friends and went to school for 10 years. I also want to work in the dorm as well.

Finding, reading and understand Braille is incredible. We at Art4theBlind create wooden diplomas, and certificates for the blind, complete with a textured seal as well as Braille under all writing.

Very nice videos. I remember the entire FSDB. I haven’t seen that before. I am so surprised. Dragon Lair, Cary White Complex, Bryant Hall, Settles Gym, library, Walker Hall. I remember that. Thank you so much for sharing this. I really appreciate that. I miss you guys so much. Hope I can see you guys again soon.
