'The toughest thing I've ever done' EastEnders' Shona McGarty opens up on leaving show after 16yrs
THE thought of turning 30 filled Shona McGarty with dread.
It wasn’t a milestone she was looking forward to or felt like celebrating - in her mind, it represented the end of her youth, and she worried about what opportunities would be left for her on the other side.
As it turned out, there was nothing to fear. “I’ve never had so much fun,” she says.
“I am a strong, independent woman. I’m confident and happy and I feel like I’m going to say ‘yes’ to everything and just go for it.”
This renewed confidence and self-belief has proved life-changing for Shona, now 32, pushing her towards the huge decision to quit EastEnders, the show where she made her name playing the iconic Whitney Dean for the last 16 years.
She told producers last summer of her wish to leave the BBC soap, and says she’s never wavered since.

Brilliant character she's been over the years. My favourite storyline was probably with her and Lee when they were married and things fell apart.

She's so pretty. She'll be missed but I think she made the good decision to leave as she's young and she has to make other roles for her career because when you see Steve McFadden and Adam Woodyatt,they never had other roles except Eastenders whilst they both are good Actors Steve could ve played in Gangster Movies and even couldve reached Hollywood.
Eastenders ain’t the same anymore.. all the good characters have left and it’s just full of bad young ones..I’ve not watched the show in 15 or 18 years.

I'm proud that the last time I watched eastenders dirty den was still in it.
Used to like her but this foster carry on has been pathetic and she is right to give it up as the scripts are awful. June Brown said and did the same. Indeed she could take a few with her......
