The 1st game I played when I was 13 or so was a WWII game using cheap plastic toy soldiers and we made up our own rules. 1. Ten men each. 2. Movement: 15cm running or 7cm walking. No shooting if running. Otherwise can shoot then move or move then shoot. 3. Shooting: Throw 1 d6 per shooter. Hit on 4,5,6 if no cover; 5,6 soft cover (behind a bush or partially visible); 6 if more than 60cm away. 4. Damage: 4,5 shook up, slight wound; 6 dead and removed. 5. If shook up or slight wound soldier laid on side, if half or more men shook up miss a turn. After that no longer shaken/wounded. 6. Grenades: each player has 3 dice representing grenades; can be thrown when enemy with 15cm. Evens everyone shook up; 6, same but one man dead and removed. There were four of us and the senario was one player's men were trapped behind a building and his teammate had come to "extract" them. The opposing two players tried to prevent this. If the player with his men behind the building managed to get at least one man "off the board" (i.e. escape) they won. We played on my friend's bedroom floor with anything we could find as "terrain". This was 30yrs ago and one of my greatest wargaming memories.

Dear sir could you please list your “complete” rules again so that I’m not missing anything. Did you also have rules for tanks? I have been looking for years for super simple rules that would allow me to play fast and easy to understand games of warhammer 40k and ww2 with friends that know nothing about wargaming. I find that all official rule systems are to slow or time consuming. To hard for beginners to remember. This I believe causes a lot of people to decline any future invites to a game. Your rule system seems very fun and easy to remember. Although I still don’t understand the throwing of hand grenades. Why 3 die? Could you please elaborate some more. 🙏

Had my first and only (similar) experience using action figures (Z-bots!) playing on my bedroom floor with my cousin some 20-25 years ago as a kid..We set up terrain with toys I had for bases vehicles and buildings. Using tape measure and dice, pen & paper to keep track of HP. It was super fun and created a fond memory that’s stood the test of time. Now getting back into it, Ive become obsessed with building my own sort of Mad Max themed game with completely original (I think) set of rules.. larger in depth and planning to use GI Joe’s and maybe some other figures along with vehicles, long and short range weapons, grenades and rockets..etc..inspired by the possibility my son will take a liking to it.

As a wargamer for over 50 years, thank you for trying to bring new people into our fascinating hobby. It's got me to battlefields in Europe and the USA, got me published and got me the best group of friends anyone can have. And finally got me a whole lot of fun and laughter!

As a 50 years plus wargamer I thought you did a good job introducing the topic to the complete beginner. I would say that some of the 1960's rule sets, like those of Donald Featherstone, Charles Grant or Joseph Morchauser rules are a bit easier for a beginner than Lion Rampant; but they are not too difficult for someone to start with. Since i watched this video and understand the logic behind wargaming ive actually been working on a project to make some wargaming rules for GI Joes action figures. Such as different probabilities for different weapons and for different distances from targets. Hopefully when my son gets old enough to understand i will have a complete rule guide and we can play with my collection of gi joes i had as a kid. I swear its almost as fun coming up with the rules as it is to play.

I've been wargaming for probably 20 years and I still enjoyed this video.

From Massachusetts..Very good. Start simple yet a basic complexity in general engagement. Recently I have been building on Rev. War Brits and Continental Swoppets that I had from 1980 Britains of course. Have a Featherstone book and am getting back into hobby. Great fun. Once rules are absorbed a goodly pace is possible. Anyway thank you I enjoyed it and think this type of hands on basic tutorial is very useful.

Thank you! I have already played a few games but this was still entertaining! I have just finished playing a game with these rules. They are very simple and have began expanding on them. 1. Cavalry Moves 10 inches. 2. Infantry and Archers 8 inches. 3. When bases touch, combat begins. 4. Roll 2 dice, and whoever is higher wins. 5. The loser removes their figure. When combat happened, we paired each figure off. It was very quick-paces and fun. Bye!!! 👍🏻

I think this helps me understand the genre better. I want to try out wargaming at some point but I'm intimidated by the miniatures hobby and worried about the cumbersome rules. Knowing how simple it can be is really helpful for me who just wants a fast and fun game. Thanks for making this vid!

I am about a year in. You do not have to buy miniatures. There are many games that come with sheets of 1/2 or 3/4 inch square chits or 1 inch wood blocks with all the units needed in the box. The benefit of these over figures or miniatures is that they will often have the attack, defense, and movement #s directly on the chit + a picture of the unit type + possibly a name or other info. This reduces the need to keep looking in the book. I have some with 8-16 pages of rules which are like a medium-level board game in complexity. You can check BoardGameGeek for complexity Weight rating on most games.

Great vid, wish I had seen this when I first started looking into wargaming. That said, I got drawn into it for collecting and crafting first, gaming second. Thanks for the share 😀

Generally because wargames are quite expensive, and buying and building stuff that work as "backgrounds character" is not generally cost effective for a company and gauge interest only for a small number of people. For example, mordheim has a lot of between games stuff that consist of going shopping, healing dudes, hiring new guys, etc... Everything is resolved by a couple of dice rolls, but you could expand on that by introducing some extra house rules, maling it more like a rpg, which is a bit different than a wargame. To resume: making a miniature game which basically play like agricola is not a good idea because it would be too expensive for something that is like just "nice to see". Making a miniature game like an rpg would be expensive too because you would need a lot of different miniature fpr any possible encounter + a lot of scenary for dungeons and stuff (which you can actually do with dnd and reaper miniatures, but it's again, very expensive for something which is essentially a plus to the game, not a core part of it).

Nice explanation, sometimes even the "simpler" Osprey books can be hard to understand if you are a "solo" player, no one to ask. I've got a free download game lined up, so another good cheap introduction to Table Top gaming. You got a sub from me.

I think the calm and almost soothing manner in which you explain things helped me to realize that I don’t really need to abide by the official rules of games but could easily change them to suit my needs. This way I can hopefully persuade friends and family to finally try a few games. They always complained that it looks to complicated. And I realize that they were right. Thank you for the kind words - it’s true - if you are not used to them even ‘entry’ level wargame rules are too complex for complete beginners in some ways. There needs to be something purposefully for total beginners that covers many periods - so people can get games done quickly - as in inside an hour - and ease in. More to come!

To be honest, I got in to this hobby because I wanted to have great looking painted miniatures and than play games with them. Then I read a few rule books and decided to just carry on collecting and improving my painting skills. After about ten years of Painting minis I can say that I’m getting really good at it. But I have never played a single game! Everything you said is true sir. I’m afraid and ashamed to admit to other war gamers that I don’t understand the rules.😢 So I don’t play. How sad!!!! Please help sir. Teach people like me the basics.

Suggested way to start wargaming: Play simple skirmish game How i started: Apocalypse size 40k match in 5th edition. LoL

I'm a tabletop player that's been drifting from the hobby because of lack of challenge and found myself drawn to wargaming. I'm in this weird place where I'm less of a beginner than I am not. Half of fhe aspect pf the game feels very familiar. The other half is entirely alien.

Depends where you are in the world re shipping costs but www.perry-miniatures.com have excellent sculpts, range of periods and plastics options too. There are many but these are a good general place to start and are among the best.

I always struggled with war games, then started with D&D 5e (for those who don't know, D&D TTRPG was built on war gaming rules). Once I got the hang of D&D, war gaming came easy because of all the similarities.

I'm trying to develop a way that mixes board and computer wargaming with real life using paintball or simunition.

Where do u get the troops at

I like the models and the strategy but I honestly feel turned off by all the extra materials u need to buy and paint and stuff. And the space needed to store everything and you cant even play most war games at home unless you have a huge kitchen table. I wish there were some war games complete in one box, like a board game like Root or something similar. Also I much prefer to just order models already painted and 3D printed or print my own.

You nailed it. as a new wargamer and somebody who plays mainly solo or with my son, i got sick of buying the latest trend or rules just because they are the 'in thing'. I found i was spending more on rules than on figures so i stopped buying rules and came up with my own basic set that I think are inportant. If it dosnt work then i look at it and change it. Rules are only for people who play in comparisons or clubs so everybody is off the same page.

Thanks a lot I’ve given up trying to get a good knowledge of so many sets. It’s impossible. So I wait until something interesting and relevant to my favourite period comes in to spend any real time on learning anything. It can be quite frustrating and time consuming, not least expensive, going from one set of rules to the next, and that scenario/approach is utterly useless to a beginner.

Hello sir I would recommend a Donald Featherstone book. I have Battles w/ Model Soldiers. Im working with my Rev. War soldiers. I also developed a paper battle system for Civil War from this book. Using 3/4 inch cardboard rectangles fighting on 17in. By 20 inch paper with drawn terrain. As in anything find the simple beginning and go from there. This gent has done well with his presentation.

8 minutes in, and as a total beginner I STILL hadn’t heard anything that would enlighten me as to how wargaming actally works...🤦‍♂️

Start with simple rules first! I have tried on my own to learn several sets of rules only to confuse myself badly. Black Powder and hail Caesar are both fairly advanced. skirmish games are the best intro.

where does strategy lie in this, besides it being a game of odds?

People have no patience anymore. They want to play a 3 day battle in an evening. Rules have all become too similar to Warhammer. You lose the authenticity. You end up with one person micro managing a massive army, yet you have no tactical manoeuvrability at company, or even regimental level. With 28mm seemingly being the preferred scale, you have 100,000 soldiers represented by 200 figures, because that's all you can fit on the table. The whole point of refighting historical battles is so you can attempt to effect a different outcome, yet in most cases the rules are completely inappropriate.

First time i saw people playing tabletop i was confused as hell. Being a kid growing up play classic FPS, trying to understand how a dice decides your attack's damage and accuracy how deadly the damage you receive, was a concept a mouse-clicker like i was could never grasp. Flash forward today and here i am, digging through Warhammer 40k lores XD

Gave up after the first five minutes of waffle telling me absolutely nothing.

You could have explain this in half the time.

My god I nearly fell asleep talk about go around the houses that was driving me nuts next time just get on with it 30 mins to explain what should have been 5 mins I have now lost all interest.
