The Tony Romo Play That Altered Football Forever

Спорт

Tony has had a lot of impressive plays, but I think he single handedly changed football for the rest of time with a single play and it was this one right here.

Back in the early 90's, on the Gene Stallings coached National Championship team at Alabama, they had a player that was so good at holding for kicks that he was listed on the depth chart as a holder. That was all he did.

A reporter asked Bill Belichick why he keeps a roster spot for a long snapper. He goes on for 20 minutes on the history of the position and why the group of 3, kicker, punter and snapper are this way now in the NFL. I don’t think he mention this play but I’m sure he went on quarterbacks as holder.

In short: When you have three permanent special teams players working together, they can all practice together regardless of what the rest of the team is doing. When using a backup QB as your holder, you don't have that flexibility.

Often forgotten about this play is that the Cowboys could have made a first down without scoring a TD, and, in fact, Jason Witten caught a ball on 3rd down that was originally ruled a conversion, giving Dallas 1st and goal just inside the 2 yard line. But the refs stopped play, consulted, and moved the ball back, making it 4th down and initiating the fatal FG sequence. And Romo was not just stopped short of the end zone, he was half a yard short of the 1st down marker, too. Even then, Seattle was bottled up deep, Dallas had their time outs, and there was more than enough time for the Cowboys to get the ball back in good field position and move into FG range. Their defense had been solid the whole game. But on the ensuing Seahawk drive, they allowed Shaun Alexander to break free on 3rd down all the way past the 20 yard line, effectively ending the game. Total collapse.

They should have let Alexander score. The would have gotten the ball back possibly down only 7 or 8 points with time left. Of course, that would be dependent on Alexander understanding that he should not score...back then, most players were not aware of that.

Another play that screwed Dallas was the fumble called a safety in end zone from Terry Glenn. Initially I thought it should have been ruled down by contact cuz after he caught ball he put it on ground in a weird motion then losing grip of ball causing max chaos for lose ball. Anyways Seattle got the safety and Dallas punts then I believe Seattle scored on that drive. If only Seattle would have recovered and got a touchdown. Dallas would have gotten ball back being tied 20-20 instead they were behind.

I think the best choice would be to have a wide receiver hold it. His specialty is catching footballs. Also, if he lost control and had to run with it, most wide receivers have good speed, especially compared to QBs and punters.

Plus, the 2 biggest chokes in "Boys history with just 2 PO wins makes him a choker. I think you missed the real reasons why for decades the #2QB is usually the holder. 1. The QB is the only O player with experience calling the play in the huddle. 2. Other than the punter, the QB is the only player with experience calling for a snap, and catching a snap. 3. If you want to run a trick play, a QB is the best choice. E.g. If you use a DT for a holder, the other team knows there will be no trick play. 4. Inertia. As recently as 1973, there were only 40 men on a team, with no practice squad. If you have 11 starting O players, 11 starting D players, a dedicated Kicker, Punter, Long Snapper, a Return man, that’s 26. You have only 14 slots left, to fill up special teams, and we haven’t looked at backup players in case someone gets injured during the game. In case of injuries, 2 spare generic O-linemen, 2 spare receivers, 1 spare RB, 1 spare TE, 1 spare QB, 2 spare generic D-linemen, 2 spare generic LBs, 2 spare generic DBs, and how many do you have left? You have one left, and you don’t even have a “dedicated” special teams yet. Are you going to waste that last slot on a holder?? As we go back in time, the rosters only get smaller. During practice, the #1QB is busy practicing with the O-team. The #2 QB is not practicing with the #2 O-squad, because there is no #2 O-squad. That leaves the #2QB to be the holder. 🏈

I was there, in those end zone seats. Here's a story for you. I was coaching football in Wenatchee, just over the mountains from Seattle. The step dad of one of my players was friends with Holgren. He owned a Harley shop, and met Coach through that crowd. He was in charge of the game balls. He intentionally sent in a fresh ball. The kicking balls are rubbed down prior to the game. Dude was bragging all over town, how that slick ball slipped out of Romo's hands. You can see the shine on the ball. Sounds like a fairy tale, but that summer the NFL made it a rule that there must be an official in charge of all game balls. True story.

@Johnny-rj9on From an article on November 20th, 2008. Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo last Wednesday took a homeless man to the movies. The man whom Romo took to the movies name was Doc. He was passing out flyer's when a man came up to him and offered to pay for his movie. At first Doc declined. Then, realizing he turned down Tony Romo, according to reports, he ran down the street asked for the day off and ran to the theater. Romo and Doc ended up sitting together watching the movie Role Models. Doc told the newspaper that he informed Romo that he hadn't showered in days. "Don't worry about that," Romo said, according to the newspaper. "I'm used to locker rooms." Earlier in the season, Romo also helped an older couple change a flat tire. Romo also appeared at his high school prep rally with actor Will Smith. Romo himself confirmed the encounter. Doc really appreciated Romo's gesture. "For me, it was a blessing," Doc said. "It came at just the right time. It gave me some encouragement and faith in mankind. I just wanted to say thank you." It's great to hear about the good athletes doing good things instead of all the negatives. The QB of America's Team is sure upholding its high image. The Cowboys will host the San Fransisco 49ers this Sunday.

In football, or any other employment situation, leaders must constantly ask; “do I need x athlete/employee with x skills/training/experience to do x job?” and “what responsibilities does of the athlete/employee have in performing the job in order to achieve the desired outcome?” More analytical thinking = better selection and application of assets available for the desired outcomes. To blame those losses on Romo is a casual take from someone who doesn't understand football or never watched those games. Was it Romos fault the defense gave up 52 pts vs Denver when his offense put up 48? Was it his fault the defense didnt force a SINGLE PUNT against the Rodgers led Packers when Rodgers had a busted up calf the entire game? Early in his career he threw a ton of picks, as ALL gunslingers do. Favre threw a bunch early too. But when that calmed down and the game finally came easier to him, the team around him was absolute trash, and he got all the hate because fans like you only remember him for his rookie contract years... This play summed up Romo's career - 2006 - In his "Pro Bowl" year he had 11 turnovers to just 4 TDs in 5 of his final 7 games (the exceptions were his 7 TDs to 1 Int games against NFL bottom feeders Atl and TB). including a 3 TO gm in the finale against Det with PO seeding on the line. Then before he fumbled away that PO game in Seattle, he completed just 4 of his 1st 12 passes with the only points until the end of the first half coming from a defensive TO and a rare 50 yd FG from Gramatica. 2007 in his final 3 games (with home-field adv on the line) 1 TD 5 INTs and just a 51% completion rate. 2008 finale with a PO spot on the line - a 0 TD 3 TO game in a 44-6 blowout loss to the Eagles. 2010 PO - a 0 TD 3 TO game in a 34-3 blowout loss to the Vikings. 2011 week 4 - throws 3 interceptions (2 pick-6s) leading to the largest collapse in Boys' history. 2012 finale loss to Wash (again with a PO spot on the line) - 2 TDs to 3 TOs. 2013- week 15 loss to Green Bay has 2 ints in the final 2:58 leading to the 2nd largest collapse in Boys' history. 2013 season finale for a PO spot - he's MIA b/c, as usual, he was injured. He missed 37 gms due to injury (2 1/3 seasons). He had 60 Pro Bowlers and 12 All-Pros playing behind him in just 10 years with 2 HOFers (Ware, Owens) and a future HOFer (Witten). Yet he made it to the POs just 4 times (he was carried by his D in '06) with 2 PO wins b/c he was injured or choked. 'Boys fans- responses will be ignored - don't waste your time.

QB's are use to catching a ball standing up in shotgun, then passing 20yds down field wear gloves are a detriment. It's as broad as its long. The Punter in most NFL teams is the backup place kicker and, almost without exception, they are competent place kickers having done the job in school and / or college. You'd back an NFL punter to kick a straightforward field goal or an extra point if the primary place kicker went down - and it does happen. If the backup quarterback is the holder - think Kubiak, Reich, both exemplary - it's just a different man kicking the football. Not so complicated a change. But if the Punter is the holder, then you've now got to find a backup holder to hold for the backup place kicker (who is the starting holder) whilst he kicks. This puts more stress on the key workflow between long-snapper, holder and kicker who may have to go out and do it "cold" without having practiced at all, ever, as a triumvirate.

The other change that occurred was the refs holding the kicking ball bag. The home team supplies the kicking balls and used to control them. The plot thickens. Paul Tagliabue lost the owner’s confidence and in August of 2006 Roger Goodell took the helm. Roger and the owners decided the cover up would have to stand. The play. Matt Hasslebacke said he could throw the ball so fast and hard that nobody could catch it. The receiver corps said BS. So the contest was on. The Dupe. Earlier in the season one of the CBs caught a stinger. The trainer had a can of ice cubes in a can, that freezing spray that would numb the pain. The can dispenser cap iced up in the open position. When the trainer was finished spraying the CBs stinger he tossed the can to the ground. The can kept spraying and as happenstance is, it sprayed on a ball. One of the other trainers picked up the ball and noticed the sprayed area on the ball was very slick, like silicone spray. The trainer told Matt about the slick balls. After Matt had tossed balls through the receivers hands they figured out the trick. They had a laugh and someone suggested that it could be done in a game. They saved the ploy for Dallas in the playoffs. You’d think they’d be ashamed of themselves. Not them Birds.

I remember this game. What bothered me was that the Cowboys defensive coaches did not understand how to play the situation on the next play. Seattle was ahead by 1 point with just over a minute left to play. The Seahawks handed the ball off on the next play, and the running back ran for about 20-30 yards. What I did not understand is, why didn't the Cowboys defensive coaches just tell the players on defense to let the Seahawks running back run for a touchdown? If the Seattle running back was too dumb to not score, and he ran for a touchdown, the Cowboys could have gotten the ball back only down by 8 points with about a minute left in the game... Of course, the Seattle coaches might have gone for 2 to give them a 9 point lead, but if they didn't make it, the Cowboys would have been behind by 7 points. The next play after this, the Cowboys should have let the running back run for a 98 yard touchdown. That would have most likely given them a chance to come back...

Because of his banana fumble kicks, and his ability to run different punt fakes, and his distance and ball placement, Hekker is arguably the second best punter after Ray Guy.
