Over the past few years we have been following 8bitdo and their controller releases. While some have been a bit more traditional, they do have a tendency to get pretty creative with some of their products. The latest controller that we are looking at today is the smallest controller I have ever seen.

This isn't a joke product though, for emulating anything up to 16 bit this controller's quality competes well with the first party controllers. You don't so much need heft or grips without analog sticks you need good quality buttons. While small, these buttons have that good feel. And it fits a niche of something that has similar functionality to a single joycon but with a dpad instead of a stick, and that's a niche some people want

The small size, low cost and number of platforms supported makes this a pretty neat option for controller mods. I've been meaning to retrofit an old Amiga joystick into something more modern for use with emulators. One of these would easily fit in there. It's pretty much cheaper buying one of these than trying to source all parts for a DIY solution.

I thought "8bitdo" was based off "Nintendo", and since that's a japanese name you're supposed to pronounce it as "doh" (just one vowel sound, unlike the "ou" pronuntiation that's so common in english). Then again, english can be a clusterfuck when it comes to phonetics and people are gonna pronounce it whichever way regardless of what anyone says. Especially americans, who get pretty irritable when someone tries to correct their pronuntiation and will go for the wrong pronuntiation on purpose just out of spite.

  • @SourStrawberrys

@@raid3n1117 So you pronouce Nintendo as Ninten "doo"? Or Condo as Con "doo" or Commando as Comman "doo"? Come on now. It is no suprise that when people read it they see it as "dough" rather than "doo". 🙄 So dont think that just because it is not spelled as "doe" or "dough" that people aren't going to initially pronounce it that way. There are many words were it is spelled as "do" but actually pronounced like "doe".

In find that 8bitdo controllers are always way more comfortable than you think they're going to be from their appearance. I just got my Zero 2 and it's surprisingly comfortable for anything that doesn't use the shoulder buttons too frequently. And it's fun to use too, the light weight actually makes it feel nice too. And my Pro 2 also from 8bitdo kind of looks like a weird cross between a SNES and PS1 analog controller, but man, once in the hand it's uncanny how comfortable it is.

Then when I got the Pro + (with the grips) my wife ended up keeping it and using it a lot with her family. For Mario Kart and Mortal Kombat mostly. I'm just about to pick up one of these because we're occasionally short by just one controller, so I'll just stick this thing in the carry case so I always have it ready to go

Apparently this controller is quite popular in the art scene, people is using this as keyboard shortcut for painting apps on ipad/PCs. This might be the smallest bluetooth device that have keyboard input.

I mean doom would actually be playable with this as it has no need for a right stick or vertical aiming but fpses made after around 1997 would have problems with it

If i recall, start + select puts you to the suspend menu in the s/nes stuff no matter the controller (at least that's what I had to use with a NES classic controller converter through an adapter)

It's too costly for what you're getting, should have been no more than 15$. Either way, I'm still hoping we get an 8BitDo Lite with circle pads instead of the extra directional pads.

just pre-ordered it via amazon. I wouldn’t use this for switch as the switch already has two larger joycons. But I will use this for my chromebook with retro arch android app and Apple Arcade games for my iPhone. It’s an extra controller where ever you go, in case ish goes down. 😁

Is a glossy finish getting scratched up any worse than Nintendo cheaping out and just spraying a matte finish on the joycons and pro controller just to have it get unevenly polished to a shine from use?
