Same here. I was told that if I ended up getting deployed to some combat area, don't wear new/newish or unstained uniforms outside the wire, because it makes you stand out like a sore thumb pretty much anywhere. But they also said that the same exact piece of kit/uniform with the ineffective regular UCP camo (that looks sort of like a faded teal green mixed with light grey when it's new, to my eyes) can surprisingly transform into a fairly effective and decent camo pattern after it has aged, been used/abused, if it has picked up a decent amount of staining from sweat, dirt, and other things. And it is surprising once you see some uniforms and kit that has gone thru the aging and staining process (especially if it occured naturally, thru regular wear and use) and compare it against anything new that is in UCP, because they pretty much look like completely different camo patterns/colors, and it does become fairly effective in a lot of cases, however that is usually around the same time that the item is nearly worn out and needing to be replaced lol. I had never heard of using coffee grounds to stain the UCP uniforms to be more effective, but it sounds like it would work, if done properly. I wish I had that knowledge back then, and I'm thinking about getting some of my old camo stuff out of the closet and possibly testing that out....i get curious about such things lol

As someone who wears UCP when playing OPFOR, I've always wanted some UCP-D but jeez is it pricey. there was a joke camo the British army came out with for aprils fools, and it was basically redbrick overlaid over MTP which had a similar colour profile to UCP-D and when it was revealed it was a joke, a lot of the OPFOR guys got disappointed, cos it looked kinda cool and would have fitted our requirement of wearing older and strange patterns quite nicely.

Although Multicam (or the slightly modified OCP version of it) is a good pattern, if the U.S. enters a major conflict they might have to consider a new pattern again. Reason being because tons of armies have started using it as well so it’s gonna be hard to tell friend from foe when there’s 4 different armies running around in Multicam. Even some Russian SF units are using it.

Little more info for those out of the loop: UCP fails as a camo pattern for two reasons: it has a bad color palette, and it uses a "digital" pattern. UCP features too many gray and blue hues, resulting in the average color being a pale teal color. A "Digital" pattern is the blocky pixellated style, which fails as a uniform pattern since it was designed for Naval Vessels. More specifically! Camouflage is designed to break up your silhouette by making parts of your body appear to be part of or concealed by the environment, even when you're partially exposed. This means each blotch of color needs to be big enough to be seen, but not so big that one color dominates the others. UCP fails due to its color blotches being way too small due to the sheer nature of "digital" camo, which was designed for Tanks and Naval vessels. When done properly, each "pixel" would be about a foot wide, and would align better with concrete buildings or the skyline. On people? The sharp corners are really noticiable in natural terrain, and never align enough in urban areas. In order to pass the tests, the pixels had to be shrunk, but nobody bothered to update the size of the splotches themselves.

I have a buddy online who does airsoft in an old construction site, he uses UCP-D and he's damn near invisible. Crazy how one color can change the effectiveness on a camo pattern

My buddy's unit figured out how to fix the ACU pattern themselves without this early into the war on terror. They would wash their combat uniforms with coffee grounds and the color would stain them tan. They would have a pristine uniform to wear on days off or back home to avoid an ass chewing.

Gotta admit, this version of UCP is quite nice on the eyes.
We had the BDUs and their generally effective woodland camouflage pattern....and today, after multiple stops along the way, we have a multicam derivative which is a lot like woodland camo but on a smaller scale, and the latest ultra hot weather lightweigh camo uniforms bring back the BDU's great buttons. So...we got it right in the 80s and should never have left it. Today's camo is a lot like BDUs.
Looks a lot like Flecktarn or Flaktarn camo pattern with the brown
The only saving grace for UCP was that the colors got sun bleached so hard and you really couldn't tell what the pattern was anymore.
Used that pattern in Iraq 2011. We called them 'FRACUS.' Fire Resistant ACUS. They were super thin and we had to go get them altered to reinforce the elbows, knees and groin area to handle going out in the field.
I am a USMC veteran of Iraq. I remember seeing my Army brothers in 2006-07 in OIF wearing that godawful grey UCP camo. Probably one of the dumbest gear ideas out there. The only good thing is once it gets filthy it looks like the local dirt.

Dyeing old UCP items with Rit Camel dye actually makes a decent camo. If you could tie-dye it, it would possibly be similar to UCP-D.

Even some Russian SF units are using it.
my first deployment to Afghanistan was in ACUs and my second deployment was in multicam. I was blown away at what a big difference the multicam made. when we were dismounted it was much harder to see where my soldiers where and made keeping the wedge formation together a bit of a pain in the butt. I was thankful.
Delta looks cool and if the bits were smaller I could see it working in a dry environment in the tropics
UCP-D is bad ass. After years of looking I finally found a L/XL delta ACH cover, and it's my favourite piece in my collection. Even though it didn't beat out OCP I still think that it's a sick pattern.
What I love most about multicam more than the obviousness that the pattern and colors were so much better is that their is so much less Velcro bullshit to deal with since you can get a sewd on rank and nameplate.
I saw a couple of guys wearing these in Afghanistan back in 2010 and I was amazed at how much just adding some brown made it look so much better and actually kind of effective
UCP-D looks like a digitized muted flecktarn.

Looks like the camo the soldiers wore in the movie ‘Soldier’ with Kurt Russell
Multicam in my opinion is one of the best to date
That’s actually pretty bad ass

The only time regular UCP works is if you get your uniform a little damp, and then roll around in the sand
I deployed with ACUs we crawled through the mud and dirt and stained them to help blend in. I kept one uniform clean to go home in.
I actually liked the Delta pattern.
The only time my ACUs were effective was when I stood against a 150 year old cracked, weathered, multi-toned wall. The ACU-Ds were really a relatively effective option.
