Nothing on the internet compares to the personal connection some of the greats from early youtube have given us. I watch every video from like 4 channels and all of them go back to like 2010 at the latest. They've remained true to self and given so much more than the shills that dance for sponsors or giant sub counts that chase algorithms. We are so spoiled and it is beyond what we could even dream let alone deserve.

Those microtransactions and loot boxes really scares me a lot tbh, you need to pay something on the game that you already pay. unlike back in the 90's you need a certain condition, effort, or beating the game to unlock characters and skins, as well as digital and gamepass that needed to play a game.

Same. Gaming is going to be a dumpster fire. Digital has pushed incomplete, unfinished, bug filled games that care more about pushing their dlc. A lot of gamers just accept the state of these games and expect it. Going gold means nothing now. Used to mean a game was complete and off to the publisher. Now digital is on to pushing games as a service that is even worse. Want an example, see Halo and how it has been ruined by that concept. Digital games just hold no value to me. I want a collection of physical games not a pile of drives with games on them. We should never want the physical option to be taken away. edit: I forgot to mention game preservation- In games that are only digital they can be taken away in an instant and never be played and appreciated again.

@Mister Black I like them both. It depend on where is the digital games come from. If it's by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, digital games from those are only to that specific devices. If it's from steam, it would last maybe forever. Digital games can get delisted and can be taken away. You probably ask why taken away. I give you 2 examples. If one is banned from a particular console, digital games from within cannot be playable even if one purchased that game. The other one is banned from that country. Iran did that to Modern Warfare. Physical. I have both physical and digital of Castlevania SOTN. The difference between this 2 are astounding. Voice and unlockable content are preserved on the Physical. But the digital got rid of the unlockable and the voices are different. I prefer the physical version because the voice is more sophisticated European accent vs the younger American accent. That's why many collectors wanted the physical version of SOTN. And the price tag of SOTN is more expensive to get.

  • @tr1bes

@Mister Black Here is another game that there is a difference. Contra Hard Corps on the Genesis. With physical when fighting a boss, the boss flashes on screen while being hit on an old CRTV and or tube TV. With digital, the boss doesn't flash being hit. Emulation of games can only do so much. I do see a plus on digital games. Some physical games are just too expensive to get like Panzer Dragoon Saga. Therefore digital is one way to play that game. It also a way to not always pre-order games. I don't see a rarity of games anymore because digital eliminate that prospect. Maybe on older games but not from generation 7 and onwards. That's also dealing with sealed games on gen 7 and up but that's a different topic. Basically sealed games from gen7 and up are useless.

  • @Samzsquanch

    @Samzsquanch

@Mister Black that's leaping over what's scary about digital, which is that at any point, poof the game could be gone, at any point poof, an update drops, and all the music channels to an open-world game are changed. Physical gave developers a definitive endgame. It's true, back when it was all physical, games still released buggy with cruddy frame rates and on, but i'd argue they generally released more complete visions, these days it's like a game will release missing the last levels, that's something that didn't happen back then, and I'd prefer that in a way, I'd rather have a game that's a focused complete product that I could have access to whenever I please then something that might be the thing it was marketed as in five years after updates. Also physical gives you more access to sharing with friends ( something all the big companies are cracking down on with digital), with physical you have more wiggle room with prices, with physical you own a product and have multiple options with the product. With digital you're buying access, not the product, at any point, they could say "well to access this thing you bought, you have to buy these other things which tie in with this thing" they'd just dress it up in fancy corpo talk. You give all the power to the corporations and as a consumer you have little.

For me, the scariest time in gaming was the late 00s and early 10s. I grew up on platformers, then got into RPGs with the PSone and PS2, which became my favorite genre to this day. But as anyone who was a game enthusiast in that era knows, that era of the PS3/360 was all about brown, grey, guns, gore, grit and anger. Japanese games in general took a backseat, largely relegated to handhelds and smaller scale releases. I was honestly afraid the games I loved most were going to die out. Thankfully, as we got deeper into the 10s with PS4 and especially Switch, RPGs are back in a big way and I feel, in general, game releases are the most even and balanced for all tastes that they've been in a long time

Getting rid of game manuals, cutting content to sell as DLC, microtransactions, season passes that don't tell you what you're buying, paying more to get less, releasing games unfinished, lazy ports, DRM, pre order bonuses, the list goes on forever.

Xenosaga Ep. 1 was the kind of game that helped you believe all the hype about the PS2. There was a PAUSE BUTTON for cutscenes. That was something I'd never seen before in video games--and you needed it, because some of those scenes lasted for like 45 min. It really impressed upon you what the PS2 and the DVD medium were capable of, and I remember at the time that _Official PlayStation Magazine_ reviewed the game and said something to the effect of, "This is the kind of game where you just have to stop everything and devote your life to it for a solid month or so." So true.

There are many things that worry me in gaming but the prevalence and reliance on cutscenes is a big one. Games are capable of telling story interactively, having the player learn information from context or just notice things as they play. Too often it feels to me like the designers dont trust the players (or themselves) to notice things unless the game stops all interaction and gets the characters to discuss it out loud. Ive been playing through the Ys series for the first time over the past few months (so many fantastic games!) and Ive been dissapointed to see the rise in cutscenes throughout it, specifically im playing Memories of Celceta just now which set up a great moment with "the tower" as the next big thing to find, I came over the crest of a hill and I saw that tower surrounded by thunderstorms, framed by the ground below and town beside it. Then the game immediately halted so the characters could say "Oh, is that the tower we have been looking for? Oh, is that a nearby town we thought would be here? We should go there" which destroyed that moment for me and then characters had a conversation about if its that tower and what to do about it. Personally, I want the primary storytelling in a game to be interactive and not a movie, the same as I want a movie to tell its story primarily through audio/visual and not through text. Cutscenes have a place I just think not as often as I generally see with current games.

Yes, Xenosaga was HUGE on the movie department, you could just sit back and enjoy your popcorn. Fortunately there is a great game in there as well, and I really think it deserves a remake or a remaster! (same goes for Xenogears of course). What is really outstanding is the comparison between the early 90's and the early 00's. Games changed so much during this decade! Modern-era games and the ones that came out during the early 00's have much more in common, than games between the early 90's and early 00's.

It’s finny hearing you talk about the cinematic cutscenes in gaming. Forst game I played was Sonic 2 on the mega drive, 1st game I owned was Tekken 3 on the PS1 and I remember thinking back then…. I was i could explore the lore/world of Tekken more. The. the PS2 came out and prior to this point i was way to young to know of or know anybody who was in RPGs/JRPGs but my best friends bought a PS2 with FF X on it, I played and thats when I realized videos games were art and could tell the greatest stories better than any medium and that what made me love video games till this day. And I REALLY relate to actually missing more cutscenes, back then a cutscene felt like a reward for all the hard work you put into the game, getting treated to a brand new visual. That’s more or less gone now tho with gameplay being on par with graphics back then as technology has moved forward. I need one of these indies companies to basically make a PS2 love letter game

Going from 2D to 3D was difficult to put it mildly, some games pulled it off nicely, others felt like you were fighting with the camera view to control the game. The one game that still resonates with me during this era was Silent Hill, the camera worked beautifully in a 3D space compared to most games of the time, and the cut scenes complemented the game rather than stalled the gameplay. That’s what the whole PS2 era felt like to me. It seemed like a lot of games while looking great took a lot of short cuts in the game play. Like you said cinema was taking over and the game play itself especially in RPGs was bare. Exploration was mostly gone , there were a lot of point and click maps to traverse and going from point A to point Z was excessively linear. While RPGs in the era before the early 2000s still actually were pretty linear they weren’t so up front with it. Giving you plots of land to explore that helped the world building and the gameplay itself had more to it. I know exactly what you’re talking about Johnny. I felt the same way back then!

A big thing that scares me in video gaming is the life span of physical games. I feel like it may be like the situation in the twilight zone episode where 1 guy survives a bomb. He says there's time now, but can't read. Like when I have free time which is rare I can play my backlog of physical games that I bought. Or when I retire, but I shouldn't wait for that. Its hard to find time to play games. Physical games deteriorating over time. Playstation1 games that I bought but didn't have time to play yet. I just barely had the time to finish Grandia on PS1. I still have more to go.

For me it was playing Dragon's Lair and Mad Dog McCree in arcades. Not only was it the first time I ever saw an arcade cabinet accept paper money, but I had no clue what the heck I was doing and I hit that game over WAY quick. More recently, and aligned with your story: MGSV. I had previously only played Metal Gear on NES and MGS on PS1, but my friend wanted to play multiplayer MGSV with me. So I waited half a day for the game and all of its DLC to download to my PS4. Then I started the game, ready to hop into multiplayer and... I woke up after nodding off and the intro cinematic was still playing. Finally after an eternity we got to play, but I only played it that one time. I eventually deleted the game to make space for something else, and now when I see it in my download catalog all I can think is: "Never again."

Back when Xenosaga came out, my friend got it and he knew I loved JRPGs but hated overly long huge cutscenes... I had no clue what Xenosaga was but he was like "Give it a shot you'll probably like it".... I don't think I even made it through the opening cutscene before I turned it off, he was cracking up knowing I'd hate it.

Totally agree, I want to play the games, not watch them. Some cinematics is totally fine, but they should add to the game, not feel like they replace it. One thing that has not really been scaring me, but I don't like the directions it's been headed recently, is how boss battles tend to progress. I don't like it when a boss battle is 30-50 minutes long, with cutscenes and all that. That's one reason I always play games on Easy difficulty now because I don't like replaying a boss battle that long if I lose near the end. The biggest thing however is when you deplete a boss' health bar and it completely recovers and the 2nd, 3rd or 4th phase of the boss starts. When you finally finish the boss instead of going "Yes! I did it!" you sit there thinking "Is it over? ok good/finally". At one point it's just so long that all the excitement is gone, and as for myself that point in time might be earlier than many others. They just keep getting longer though.

Xenosaga was the first game I ever preordered. I remember that I got a cool t shirt with the cover of the game with KOS-MOS on it. Did anyone else get this? It was definitely through gamestop. I wish I still had it, but I definitely wore the shit out of that shirt. But damn I remember those massive cut scenes and having the same feeling about where games were heading. I think I did see the game through to the end, but I never played any of the following games.

For me the early HD period where we saw a steady decline in Japanese games really bummed me out. I honestly thought games like dragon quest, ff, resident evil etc were going to die in those years, and it would make me so sad. I stopped playing new games for a few years. E3 2015 was the moment the ship turned around for me, and the ffvii remake trailer excited me so much i bought a ps4, and went back to university to study art for games. Im a full time studio game artist now because of that E3!

The funny thing about Xenosaga is that even though the cutscenes feel like they take up a majority, they don't. Across the 3 episodes it took me about 150 hours and there's about 24 hours of cutscenes; meaning cutscenes only take up about 1/6 of the whole experience.

ye i agree they have the balance about right now, i dont mind about 1 or 2 minutes of cut scene but anymore and I tend to skip it and get back into the gameplay, unless its a story heavy game. But then i am more of a arcade game kind of guy :)

I remember back in the PS3/Xbox360 era whenever I buy a game for $60, then that game would get a lot of DLC, then around 1 year later (or even less) we would get the complete version of the game for $40, and you have to pay that in order to get the improved version of the game, I know Capcom did that with a lot of their games in that generation. I was also getting worried whenever they announce a DLC around release or sometimes releasing a DLC at release. Sometimes the DLC would be a harder mode of the story mode. Even this generation I am getting a bit worried with all the subscriptions such as PS+ and Gamepass. I am a bit worried that physical games would become less in demand, and game sales might go much lower that companies might no longer develop great games.

It's interesting listening from Johnny story about his time of gaming during the late 90s & early 2000s because I got into gaming in the mid late 2000s & played games like the Uncharted series, Assassin's Creed, The Last of US than later tried RPGs like Dragon Quest XI, Persona 5 Royal & the Tales of series so I have got in use to games with story telling that has long cinematic cutscenes to the point that I am expecting these games to have them & if they don't have it it is off putting for myself that is why I have always been interested in Retro games I hope I have the time & opportunity to try them

So to reel it back to gaming. I think my biggest concern is right now is with PlayStation. They are focusing on the western market with games that target western mature themes (too serious at times), gritty real life art direction and movie quality cinematics. I love J-RPGs and sure there is the long list of third party exclusives coming to PS5 but they don't have any 1st party output. It's almost not fair but after completing Monolith Softs third mainline entry in the Xenoblade Chronicles series I just felt like PlayStation was lacking. That's despite FFVIIR, Tales of Arise, Nier games and so much more being expreinces held on PS4/5. I just ask myself what would a modern 1st party PlayStation J-RPG look like today. I am also concerned about PlayStations sales performance in Japan and what Japanese developers catering to the western market might look like some time from now.

Final Fantsy 7 scared me. It took me 100 hours to beat, and in the end, it ruined games for me. I got scared of committing that much time again to a single game. This is when my backlog started growing, because i became a commitment phobe. I like pick up and play games of yore. I don't like how much time and energy I need to commit to learn how to play these seemingly neverending games.

As soon as you started talking about games that have so much story that it sacrifices gameplay, I instantly thought of Xenosaga. I still love that first game though. I have this experience with online gaming and mobile gaming. Knowing how massive online gaming was at one point during ps3 transition from ps2, especially with computer game grow up, there's a point I'm afraid developers will start to focus on that kind of a game rather than story-driven game that u can enjoy yourself. Glad single player game still going strong, but rn about how big mobile market is and how can a simple game can makes million within microtransaction, I hope it won't affect console market ever.

I remember playing Episode 1 on a school night, and I remember going "Okay, after this scene, I'm gonna save and go to bed." and the damn thing took almost an hour to get through! The things that have scared me the most with gaming are: 1. The obsession with multiplayer the industry went through at one point made me fear for single player games since I have no interest in multiplayer. 2. The death of physical media 3. Loot box's undermining the very foundation of gaming. 4. DLC, just how much more do I need to pay to get the full experience. I loved Xenosaga, it's one of my favorite PS2 games and I was actually amazed by the cutscenes, I felt they made the game seem so epic and polished. I definitely remember the discussion around those cutscenes at that time though, they were fairly divisive.
