In this video we make a habitat for a fish I've never kept before....Tiger Barbs. I did not realise they stay relatively small and don't just destroy all your plants. I really love these guys and can see myself doing something much bigger at some point in the future as well. School of 100 would look pretty cool right!

    Last night I was thinking about tiger barbs for some reason and wondered if you had any, I wake up too see this, what a wonderful scape! you've come to a point where you have the amount of tanks where every week or so one's been around for over 6 months so you can re-scape it which works so well, meaning your videos are consistent and inspiring, keep up the amazing work!

    Hey MD, just wondering - when you drain the tank down and pull all the decor and that substrate bag out, would that not release spikes of ammonia and other nasties , for the fish that are chilling in the bottom inch or so of water? I guess they’re not in there for long, but still.. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • @MDFishTanks

    @MDFishTanks

    2 жыл бұрын

    I honestly don't think there are any nasties at all. The course gravel allows flow through the whole layer. The reason I say this is because there is absolutely zero bad smell. And the fish were all good too. They are for sale at maidenhead taunton now....unless someone has already got them.

    I don't think he let's his tanks set long enough for the substrate to grow mulm. Plus he sets up all of his tanks with power head-ish water movement. That would happen more if he had only sponge filters for filtration.

    @@MDFishTanks yes this is 100% a great thing about layering and aqua soil. Water flows through it and the plant roots supply oxygen to the substrate system so no anoxic areas! Plus love that you layer substrates as it creates so much biological filtration.

    Tiger Barbs were the first fish I kept. They were in a group of 6 or so. Later I got a handful of tetras and loaches. Everyone played nicely together. The barbs would eat out of my hand and always welcome me at the front of the tank. In hindsight, I probably over fed them because of it. Might have kept the peace as well. Maybe? Either way... They are fun fish.

    Just beautiful... Watching the tank come together with substrate, sand/rocks, wood, plants, moss is stunning and very therapeutic.. Once the fish and other animals arrive.....WOW!!!.... I can't take my eyes off the tank. The part of the video that was the second day and the fish's colours had popped, I went back to see the colours when you first put them in to see the difference. It looked like you had enhanced the colour on your camera somehow but it was just the dish settling in to their new environment... Love love these fish.. so pretty and cute to watch in their little gang. Great tank set up again... Would love this tank as a screen saver. You could take a HD picture of your tank set up, enlarge and laminate it and sell them as backgrounds for people to use behind their fish tanks. 😳😳😘❤️❤️❤️I'd definitely buy one.

    I never had any luck with Tiger Barbs on planted tank, in my experience they behave similar like my Buenos Aires, pretty naughty especially to my Dwarf Sagittaria carpets. I know some individual fish could have a different personality than the others who kept them. I gotta keep them fed enough with high grade pellets, frozen tubifex, and some spinach and floating frogbits (which they really like) to reduce their lawn-mowing behavior on my bottom plants

    A lot of API products are essentially fool proof. It's ok that their ferts are on the whimpy side, because it's tailored toward people who want to avoid risking any problems. API is very helpful to beginners, now we just need aqueon to stop making anything smaller than a 20 long, and everyone marketing oversized cartridge filters to beginners to start pushing smaller filters when appropriate and sponge filters which are just pure bliss once you finally get to know them them. Sponge filters, root tabs, larger tanks with more plants and gentle stocking, and API's different tank startup chems like quick start and essentials. Also, gorgeous aquarium build man :D

    Regarding dying bacteria in your canister filter when turning the power off, this process starts after 30 min! If you leave it off for a whole day, all will be dead. If you then turn it on again, you will put all this dead bacteria in your water column, hence the white murkiness.

    My betta buddy passed away recently. I am wondering if you might guess the plants or sponge filters would be okay as far as bacteria or whatever from what caused my fish dying? I rinsed off the sponge filters and sprayed the plants and sponges with hydrogen peroxide...so hopefully won't have to toss all of it.

    I basically left my 29 gallon go after I had some bad luck and lost everything in it save a SAE and a Synodontis catfish. It was an algae covered mess for many months that I just did my best to ignore. Fast forward to this year where I've upgraded to a Fluval 307, bought some new plants, and bought a school of 12 of these beautiful barbs. I went with 4 albino, 4 green, and 4 striped and it doesn't seem to affect their shoaling behavior so maybe they determine con-specifics based on silhouette shape or pheromones. I occasionally turn the filter flow to maximum as I've noticed they love swimming in the high current from time to time which brings me great joy.

    Love these vids, thank you so much, really inspirational. How about three cube tanks ,positioned next to each other with an image continuing from left, centre and right, just an idea?

    MD I have the exact same tiger barbs (I have 5 the now sadly lost my 6th one recently) in my 350L community tank with two Angel's and they leave them alone, it's the Angel's that are the pains lol. but they did nip at my corydoras at first, dont anymore. I absolutely love them thou and feeding is the best time if you leave the flakes at the top, (first I must say they have the nick name mini piranhas in my local pet shop), you'll understand why as they eat they will dart to the top and they sound just like piranhas when they go in a feeding frenzy 😊 I just love it there adorable fish to have and they have such a personality. P.S love the video and as always an amazing scape.

    To the person that left a rood comment yes I have 5 of those exact tiger barbs did have 6 but I also have albino tiger barbs and they all school together. I have done my research and respectfully, the 6 tiger barbs (now 5) where the only 6 left in my tiny local pet shop and I took the rest of them because I have the albino tiger barbs. There is no fish abuse and again respectfully I dont aprishate being wrongfully acused when you dont know the full story to why I have 5 (and roodly did not think to ask why I only have 5) and you dont know exactly what else is in my tank. It would be cool to see the wood more vertical with moss and plants on the top like an underwater tree scape or something.
