Why ruin a video with cornball music worse than elevator music. I've heard The Thunderbird many times on the lake and it's a beautiful sound. Fire the producer who put the music in, redo it with natural sound and you'll have a great video

nice video but really would've liked to hear those Allison's while under way.

The WW II "fighter plane" he mentioned, but didn't identify, was the Mustang P-51. (later it had RR Merlins)., plus the P-40 Warhawk and KittyHawk. This is a really beautiful classic yacht.

You're correct that the engine is the Allison V-1710 which was used by several variants of the P-40 and the very early variants of the P-51. But in the case of this boat they purchased two LEFT HAND engines slated for the P-38 Lightning. The P-322-II to be exact. These 2 engines also were built without the turbosuperchargers and they counter rotated (left hand rotate) which was needed for the "off the shelf" 23 inch prop.

That is an awesome boat.

When Bill Harrah owned the Thunderbird he enclosed the bridge and installed new engines which double the horsepower of the already powerful boat. Fastest boat on the lake.

Lake Tahoe is the perfect lake for that boat

The Allison engines in this boat were originally in the Curtiss P-40 fighter planes, Rolls Royce didn't make airplanes. They made a 12 cylinder engine like the Allison and put them in P-51 fighter planes and others. They had 100 HP more than the Allisons in this boat.

Actually these came from a P-38. And there were several different models of both the Allison V-12s and the Rolls Merlin V-12s. In fact the Merlins in P-51 Mustangs were Americanized, Packard Merlin engines. Packard made many tweaks and changes to speed production and reliability.

Allison engines were never regarded as highly as the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. But an Allison engine is great for a boat because the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine gained its Fame as a high-altitude engine it maintained its power at very high altitudes whereas the Allison engine did not.
