Hola Jordan. I started learning Spanish when my daughter started Spanish in school. It's fun because I use your videos with others on the internet (Yours for the most part. They are the best I've found.) and she's learning the conventional way. I showed her your videos and things became so much easier for her to understand. Entertaining and informative keeps it enjoyable to watch. Around 5:55 you explain about eres and es being different. The way I remembered the conjugation was that these two didn't start with "s" but they were the ones slightly resembling the English conjugation. You ARE. Tu EREs. Ere resembles "are" and add the "s" that the tu forms have = eres. Not a perfect match but close enough to jog the memory. Same deal with es. He/she is. El/ella es. Pretty close. Maybe this will help some to remember these two. Anyway, Thanks for the videos. Love the ones from your trips. By the way, just became a Gringo Forever this week!

Dude, I´m a native speaker, I don´t if you have ever done this, but I think it would be a very interesting thing if you make a video describing the differences between Peninsular Spanish and Latin American Spanish (I say this because I´m not used to say vosotros, I always say ustedes) Hope you take this in mind. +marianin Gs Ni el español de América ni el de Canarias (a lo mejor de ahí tienen ustedes la influencia) usa el pronombre "vosotros" sino el "ustedes", pero lo bueno es que se conjuga igual que la forma verbal de "ellos" (menos mal, si no, pobres estudiantes de español)

The difference between "ser" and "estar" is perhaps the most frequent question every English speaking person asks to us Spanish... and I think it's the most difficult thing to learn for every person studying Spanish as a second language. Your videos are great, otherwise I don't know how come a native Spanish is watching this at 2:51 AM on a working day. Greetings from Gran Canaria (that's in the Canaries XD )

Pues para los hispanohablante es muy sencillo: "ser" se refiere a un estado permanente: "Ella es guapa" (siempre lo es). "Estar" se refiere a un estado temporal: "ella está guapa" (hoy está especialmente guapa, más que otras veces). Un saludo desde España.

Paula, permite desmentirte. Ser es la esencia, lo que se es, no importa si es permanente o no. Estar, por el otro lado, sí representa estados temporales. Ella es guapa, pero cuando envejeció dejó de serlo. Juan Carlos de Borbon era rey, pero ya no lo es. Ni eso es permanente. Los estudiantes son jóvenes, pero en unos años ni estudiantes ni jóvenes. Ser representa lo que hay, lo que existe, las características que definen. Además ser y estar describen naturalezas diferentes, por eso no son los dos valores de una misma variable, y por eso mismo se pueden usar con el mismo adjetivo para decir diferentes cosas: ser verde vs estar verde, ser cómodo vs. estar cómodo, ser seguro vs. estar seguro, por solo mencionar algunas. La diferencia en realidad es muy compleja ya que los verbos a veces funcionan como copulativos, a veces como auxiliares y a veces funcionan de forma diferente. Decir que ESTAR es para cosas no permanentes es más cercano a la verdad que asegurar que SER es para algo permanente. Hace unas semanas vi una serie de TV con una artista que era BELLISIMA. Ahora es una mujer elegante y de buen ver, pero a sus más de 65 años puedo afirmar que con toda mi admiración, la belleza NO es permanente. Ella era guapa, fue la mujer más bella de la TV mexicana, pero la vida nos cambia, y la belleza está entre esos atributos que se van y no regresan. Saludos cordiales y disculpa el arrebato, pero desde hace unos meses he decidido luchar contra todo argumento que diga que ser es permanente (al estar lo dejo en paz).

Hola gringo, I really enjoy watching your videos, although I'm a native Spanish speaker and I am studying Spanish as my career in college they're fun to watch. However, I think you made a mistake by saying that "Estar" and "Ir" have exactly the same endings because they DON'T. I mean they look like they have the same letters at the end and it's true but you're missing a very important part about Spanish grammar, accents. Accents are essential when learning Spanish. If you don't know how to use them you're going to end up mispronounsing words. So for example, if you don't put the accent on Estás and Está you would end up saying "These and This" (Estas and Esta). So, don't forget to tell them that yes they might have the same use of letters but accents are essential.

Los acentos de "esta" son mis favoritos. Está = verbo. ¿Dónde está mi zapato? Where IS my shoe? Esta = adjetivo. ¿Quieres esta manzana? Do you want THIS apple? Ésta= pronombre. Ésta es mi blusa. THIS is my shirt. Ha sido una de las que más me cuestan pero la amo.

Dudes, as someone who's first language is French, who then learnt English & Chinese, I'm in my 2nd week into Spanish now & I can tell you Spanish is practically French & I guarantee in 6 months I'll have mastered reasonable Intermediate Spanish however, the first thing that caught my eyes with Spanish is the exceptionally arcane complexity of IR, SER & ESTAR tenses. IR gets nastier in the subjunctive form from the present Vaya, Haya ido, Fuera-Fuese, Hubiera hido, Hubiese hido, Fuere, Hibiere ido, Yendo & ido but hey, big deal if you're French or Italian, Spanish is not a new language - just a conversion or a walk in the park.

Franck Yan by definition, it is not arcane. I can say however that it's definitely weird and doesn't follow a logical approach when it comes to certain tenses. A LOT of adult native Spanish speakers still speak or write those forms incorrectly which just goes to show how (like you said) complex and bizarre it is.

When he says "estar" it sounds like "star" and "Yo" sounds pretty much like the English word "yo"

She is not beautiful, she is beautiful! - Doesn´t make sense in english, but in spanish it does! : Ella no está hermosa, ella es hermosa! (siempre)

Thanks God, English is my second language, Spanish is so difficult even for native speakers, "Ir" is not only "vamos" it is also: Yo iré, Él/Ella irá, Nosotros iremos and Ellos/as irán, we dont use the "vosotros" pronoun, nobody does! just in spain is used. Instead, we use "nosotros" even to refer to 2 people :D

Ah, y como comentario personal, no creo que sea menos importante aunque sólo se use allá. Si amas el español, lo amas en todas sus formas, si no, sólo amas tu acento, lo cual te haría muy nacionalista.

My literature (literatura because I live in a spanish speaking country) teachers always have them! There are tons of them in spanish. They're funny too. PS Try to not say your location. Say "in the US" or "in the northern/southern/western/easter US" or something rather general. It's quite easy to look you up and people might try to hurt you.

Gringo is spanish your mothertonque? I can hear there strong English accent. I'm starting to learn Spanish and I'm not an expert but Spanish pronounciation is quite close to Polish (I'm Pole) and there are: hard "R", straight vowels etc. and I can hear a soft "r" or "ou" from you. Is that good?

correct. you're the first comment that addressed that. It's not pronounced "no-so-CHROS" but more like "no-so-TODOS" The R is pronounced more like a D in spanish, and the V is more like a B.

Okay great lessons but, in which instance do you use the words in? Tú hablas? How do you know which sentence has the respective word with conjugation? I have a test and I am still stuck

1. Ser is mostly to be. Ser hermosa. To be beautiful. Yo soy una persona. I am a person. Can you "to be" a person? Can you replace it with "to be"? It's ser. If not, go to the next verb. 2. Estar is an inmediate action to the person. It may also be explained as a state of being. Say, you are always a girl, that is ser. But tonight you are a beautiful girl, then it's estar. Yo estoy en mi casa. I am home. Is it permanent? Then it's ser. CN it change? Then it's estar. 3. Ir must have a place. To ir, you must have a place to move to from a place. Iré a la playa. I'll go to the beach. If it doesn't say the place you must ask "where?" Would it have an answer then? Yo iré mañana. I'll go tomorrow. I'll go where? If you're still in doubt, say "I will be tomorrow" (ser) it makes sense, but isn't likely. Move on. "I will be tomorrow" (estar) is the same as previously but it is more of a state of being. Will you be "tomorrow" the next day? Probably not. So, it's ir.

ahhh! gave really bad nosebleed jaja.. been studying spanish for 2 years, never heard of this. i just learned each word at different times.

That's crazy talk!!! So you know the past tense conjugations right? That's where it gets really crazy. "I went" is "fui" but "I was" is "fui" (with ser). HUH? This stuff HAS TO be taught together. I can't believe neither of us have seen it before!

My 7th graders loved this video, and I have found your explanations to be very helpful when teaching grammar. However, is the bleeped out curse word really necessary?

The second I knew that real students in real classes were watching my videos, I stopped swearing, not beeped out, not anything. I went back and made clean versions of all the videos with bleeps. I don't know if you have done it already but...a video only for the verb HACER would be also veeeery useful for learners. Almost all of the complex conjugations use this verb so I think it'll be very helpful. A recommendation from a Spanish native ;)

Hacer means to do, to make. Hacer tareas. Do homework. It's a ver basic word mostly looked down upon because of it's varied used. Hacer comida, hacer la limpieza. To cook, to clean. But you could also say cocinar and limpiar. Those would be best. Spanish has loads of verbs you can use instead of hacer, so I recommend trying to find a lot instead of focusing on this one that is hard for you.

Aunque no me gusta tu pronunciación, me gusta tu contenido en tus vídeos.

Sí. Vámonos = it's in comand form and would mean = we're leaving. ( in a sort of commanding way. ) and there's "ya nos vamos" "We're leaving" subtle. Esperémonos _ we''re waiting.

I like the concept but that one word at the beginning (even bleeped out) would get me in MAJOR trouble in my school. What are you thinking??

Cindy Watson I knoooooow. This was one of my first ones. I never imagined in a million years teachers would be watching my videos, let alone showing them to students. I NEVER swear now. And I'll go back and redo these ones without the swearing. Only a few of the 43 videos I've made have any in the first place. But I don't swear anymore at all. Give me another chance =)

Gringo Español just a detail. should say vamonos and not vamanos. probably a mistake. but in practice the reason that is difficult is because is very formal. is more useful to use "nos vamos" instead of "vamonos", except on some specific paragraph.

+JustAnother Voice Yeah... The interesting thing is that to use the imperative in second person plural (vosotros) is somehow harder than with our second person plural (ustedes). If you see the conjugations it is quite different XD

In spain we use also ustedes , like the plural of usted . And vosotros as the plural of tú . In both usted and ustedes go whith the third person of the verb, and tu and vosotros whit the second person. There is not such a difference . You only use allways ustedes in plural , it, s not a big deal . And for learning makes more sense than use second person in singular and third in plural , I think .

Watch movies. Kids movies help a lot. If you can, maybe some tv shows or normal movies you have seen before. Later on maybe soaps or movies. I recommed those by Eugenio Derbez. However, you must know that native speaking shows and movies usually include jokes based on culture and are spoken quite fast. It'll take quite a bit. And don't listen to music. It might confuse you because most of the time it's not gramatically correct or well enunciated.

Ok. Here is what I don't get about "ir". i've been learning that "voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, y van" all mean that I/you/we/etc. is going to do something. it is used like a future tense but, it is really present tense (according to the spanish dictionary) so how do i say "I go to the gym" because from what i've learned it seems "voy al gimnasio" would mean "i am going to gym" or "i will go to the gym"

it's present tense and you got it right " voy al gimnasio" is I go to the gym, but to say I'm going to the gym will be " voy a ir al gimnasio" that is future tense and " ire al gimnasio" will be in English "I will go to the gym".

+umidontno040394 The thing is that "Ir a + verbo" has future time reference, althouh the form is present. "Voy a ir al gimnasio" means that you have planned to go to the gym in the near future and it translates as "I'm going to go to the gym". Just like English uses the present continuous for future reference: "I'm going to the gym" in english can mean both that I am going at this moment (present) or that I have planned to go in the near future (tomorrow, for example, but not now= future time reference).

as a someone who has to study English, I've got the inverse process to learn verbs, times and pronouns. basically we use a table for regular an irregular verbs. it's easy with the regulars verbs and later goes for the irregular. later come with the past and future times.we use the pronoun table and later applies the time. even when get complicated could use 2 Technics, use a synonymous or use a comparative between two o more possible word to think which one is the correct.

In spanish we pronounce the letters v and b the same way, like b sounds in English

Hey you should try to pronounce the words they way the language is spoken, so as to not confuse people...

"Yo soy una persona que esta apunto de irse a dormir" So, there you go with your sentence with the "3 Enemigos" is not that difficult you know.-. (Well at least for me 'cause I speak spanish and I learned english since Kindergartner *not bragging just trying to help * ) Btw I love that you're trying to teach spanish is so awesome!!

I would say as a Spanish native speaker both "fue" and "era" mean the same to you in English, in the Spanish vocabulary we use it in different situations that's all

"Ella fue mi amiga" is a very unusual sentence in Spanish. For it to make sense you need to add more information, for example, "ella fue mi amiga hasta que cumplí los dieciocho..." or something like that. The second sentence is different because it doesn't need any complement. "Ella era mi amiga" is the form in Spanish for the typical English sentence starting with "she used to be my..." It means, expressing that not any longer she is your friend.

Albert Rendón with "fue" you have to use more information, because "fue" is typically used to describe events, rather than providing inherent characteristics (in this case era would be better). Como te fue hoy? (correct you want a description of the event) Como te era hoy? (completely incorrect).

+Eli B you are misunderstanding how we use "fue" and "era". Those 2 examples have nothing to do with one another. Como te fue hoy? Is like saying how did your day go? For us "fue" in Spanish means GO and BE in past tense so fue and era in that sentence DON'T mean the same. Like Ella fue = she went or she was ... The way we differentiate is: Ella fue al parque - she went to the park Ella fue/era mi Amiga - she was my friend Hope it helps
