The three bells rung on the keyboard during the asparagus festival
The Church of St Mary was built in 1400 and then annexed to the new convent of the Dominican friars, which had been built in the gardens near the medieval temple. The church was completely rebuilt in 1640, when it became the seat of the confraternity of the Rosary. With the abolition of charitable associations, the French turned the building into a timber depot, until the good people of the village reclaimed the property and turned it back into a church at last. In 1876, the elegant Baroque bell tower was equipped with three new bells, added to replace the old ones that had been stolen by the provisional government. The bells are sung in C major and were completely restored in 2009, retaining the traditional wooden frame and strings for the ringing of the bells.

In May 2022, the bell-ringer of Cilavegna (Italy), a good person I had the good fortune to meet a few months ago, restored the ancient wooden keyboard for use during celebrations and village festivals. The original keyboard broke because the keys were rotten, so Simone decided to redo it from scratch at his own expense, helped by two men from the town. In autumn 2022, the new mechanical keyboard was inaugurated. The bells were rung by myself and two friends during the important festival of asparagus, a typical product of the plain.
The prior of the convent became Michele Ghislieri, who granted many privileges to his Dominican brethren when Pope Pius V was elected. The ancient medieval structure underwent major alterations until it was completely rebuilt in magnificent Baroque style. After being barbarically desecrated, it became a church again in the 19th century, housing beautiful gilded altars and also the body of a holy bishop, a native of the village.
