St John the Evangelist church in Piddinghoe is located in the centre of the village atop a large embankment. The iconic round tower holds three bells, unusually hung in a square frame, and have been unringble for many years. They werer cast in 1713 by Samuel Knight, probably at the same time of the building and installation of the bell frame. One can only guess that two bells, hung in the base of the tower in the old frames (which can be seen in this video), pre-dates this installation.
They are currently just swing chimed, which is not only possible since the introduction of a chiming 'lever' on the treble headstock (in-place of the more traditional full-wheel) which the other two bells still have. The bells are rung from the ground floor, and the ropes pass though an intermediate chamber before reaching the belfry. The bells are rung on Sunday prior to services by a team of local chimers called 'The Clangers'.
