    It's funny you mentioned getting some women in there to fix the situation. Carpenter specifically made the cast all male to make the movie feel more bleak and lonely. The scene with MacReady and the chess computer doen't just foreshadow him being willing to destroy everything to keep the Thing from winning, it also serves to violently rip away the only female presence in the movie, so the audience feels the absence more

    Some have gone so far as to say that an all male cast dealing with paranoia of infection in the early eighties was symbolic of AIDS paranoia. I don't know if that may be looking too much into it, but I have heard the theory.

    Offhand I can't remember a single reaction creator ever NOT pleading for the safety of the runaway "dog". Conversely, when reacting to The Exorcist they tend to assume the St.Joseph's medallion dropped at the scene of the possession is some evil thing, possibly the cause of the possession itself. I'm convinced that given an irl horror scenario the average KZread reaction creator wouldn't make it lol.

    When they first put Blair out in the shed, he is extremely paranoid and hostile. When Mack goes back out to check on him later, he is apologetic and begging to go back in, but he has a noose hanging from the ceiling. It's clear that he was planning to commit suicide before the thing can take him over, but the thing gets him before he can do it. By the time Mack checks on him, he is a thing.

    This. It's also compounded by them later going into the shed to look for him again after that, _and there's a punched-in hole in the roof._ The poor man tried to save humanity by sabotaging everything to trap the organism in the Antarctica, warned McReady about the most possibly infected member at the time (Clark, who sadly wasn't)... and right after preparing a noose to off himself and escape the nightmare, the thing crawled in through the roof and took him.

    Y’all continue to surprise and delight me with your reaction choices. The Thing is without a doubt an 80s horror favorite that not only further elevated John Carpenter’s status as a unique genre director, but also presented practical effects that still impress to this very day. The whole cast gave great performances and the story’s pacing and isolated moments makes it very hard to trust anyone and pick out The Thing amongst them in the first watch. I can’t wait to see what y’all watch next, and if you haven’t seen it already then another wild film from John Carpenter I recommend checking out is his highly underrated gem In the Mouth of Madness. ☺️

    Blair was a little smarter than the others and he got the point very quickly, that the biggest issue was to prevent the thing from ever reaching civilization, which is why he sabotaged the helicopter and radio equipment. I believe they are imitated rather than infected. This is a remake of a rather good 1951 movie called "The Thing From Another World" that John Carpenter was a fan of. It was from a 1938 story called "Who Goes There?"

  • @cthulhuwu_

    @cthulhuwu_

    This is an adaptation of the 1938 story. The 1951 movie was inspired by the story but has almost nothing in common with the 1938 story or John Carpenter's film; there is no shapeshifting alien, it's just a vegetable alien that drinks blood. Seriously. Meanwhile John Carpenter's film is almost a direct translation of the 1938 story, including the characters, the shapeshifting alien, the antarctic base, etc.

    Either one of them (more likely Childs) is The Thing or they're both human and freeze to death in the cold without knowing if they truly defeated the alien, either way, no happy ending (unless you're on The Thing's side). This is my favourite horror film. Its based on the novel 'Who Goes There?' Written by John W.Campbell Jr in 1938. It was first adapted as a film in 1951 which was called The Thing from Another World. This 1982 adaptation is actually very close to the original book story, whereas the 1951 adaptation is basically a standard 50s monster movie that has very little to do with the book story, but is still a fun watch.

    Yo, funny reaction to this amazing movie. Btw. The dog in the beginning was actually the Thing. So the guy that put the dog in the dog pen wasn´t doing anything wrong. He couldn´t have known that the dog was already an alien. There is actually a scene when Kurt starts shooting the dogs, where he literally tries to stop him from killing them. So, just to clear this little misunderstanding, he loved his dogs ;)

    I think Blair's fate was the most tragic. When he was locked up he was human. When they went to see him again with the noose hanging and him a lot calmer he had already turned. When we see him in the end with his underclothes intact it means his body wasn't taken over with tenticles violently grabbing him but rather through a single cell that got to him. Taking over him slowly. The noose seemed like a visual gag at first but then I realized he tried to kill himself when he understood what was happening to him but it was already too late.

Dealing with an intelligent foe, you dont know if its evil or simply trying to survive, who can't be killed except via fire/acid, who can kill YOU just by touching you, can imitate anything organic and its very hard to tell what is an imitation, and if it reaches water or transportation its not just the end of humanity but all living things on earth. I had the biggest crush on Kurt in this as a kid. It inspired me to one day get a flamethrower 😅 every Winter, when i hear the wind howl....i think of this movie.

    Incredible film. Probably the best ending to a horror ever. The ambiguity is perfect. Are they both the thing, is only one of them the thing, are neither of them the thing? You dont know but either way they are both going to freeze and at some point their bodies will be taken back to civilisation!🤯

    Wilford Brimley, put goggles and a mask on before messing with that nusty stump o' monster flesh! At least you have gloves. Love that head that became a spider. Creative. Talk about thinking on your feet(s)!
