The Thing (1982): How to Reveal a Monster

The Thing (1982): Suspense in the Blood Test
Ambiguity. Terror. Suspense.
Not only has John Carpenter’s 1982 body horror classic The Thing become one of my favorite films, but it's also become one of the most memorable and influential horror movies ever made, with its intricate cast, spiraling story, and evocative practical effects working together to create one of the most compelling and deeply unsettling atmospheres ever put to film. However, like Alien three years prior, The Thing also has one scene that perfectly encompasses many of the ideas the film as a whole represents, that synthesizes them through an atmosphere filled with almost tangible emotions of dread, that elevates it into truly iconic territory: The Blood Test.

    If you have any comments or questions about specifics in the video, make sure to read this. Here are a few clarifications and elaboration that I thought of after making the video: Let me say that I, admittedly, may have read a bit too much into the pattern idea and tried to force too many potential ideas into its visualization. I knew when I was writing it and seeing how often I had to change my hypothesis and interpretation that I was probably stretching it just a bit. However, with that being said, I don't think the idea that patterns were used is completely ridiculous. While the pattern I laid out may not have been as defined as I suggested, which is probably a good thing because if the pattern were too apparent, it would likely be distracting or too on-the-nose, it still had a noticeable influence, at least to me. It still built up the expectation of what would happen, raising the suspense. With all this explanation, I also wanted to draw attention to a mistake I made that you may have already seen, which is the result of my over analysis. There's a mistake as well. I said the pattern was a closeup on the suspect first, but that's not entirely true, as evidenced by Cooper and Clark, who didn't have a closeup of them specifically. However, the pattern still exists, except it's just a closeup on someone, rather than a closeup on the suspect specifically. Instead of seeing a closeup on Cooper and Clark right before Mac tests their blood, we see a closeup on Nauls through a rack focus when either Cooper or Clark are the current suspect. So, the pattern is a bit less specific. It's actually just a closeup on a character, then an insert shot, then a medium closeup on MacReady. Perhaps the reason there is no closeup on neither Cooper nor Clark for their blood tests is because they're dead and the movie simply puts less focus on them. Like a countdown, patterns build suspense by helping establish the expectation of what will happen next. The pattern I laid out doesn't mean that those are exclusive shots. There may be shots of other characters inserted as well but with each specific person being tested, you will see the shots in the pattern for that person in their testing period. "But isn't the reason we think Gary is the thing actually just that MacReady directly, through dialogue, calls him out and points him as the culprit rather than through a break in the pattern? Isn't the idea that the editing focuses our attention onto Gary a bit convoluted?" Well, yes and no. MacReady's words do makes us think Gary is the thing, independent of the editing. However, the break in the pattern *reinforces* MacReady's words. It adds another component that affects your experience on, perhaps, an unrealized level. You may not even notice how these edits affect your experience until you look closer or until you see an alternate version. I mean, even I didn't realize it until I looked at it a bit deeper. In this video, I'm explaining how the filmmaking choices affected my experience, so when I feel something has impacted me emotionally, I'm looking to see why, to see what choices made me feel that way, why I was disappointed or angry or sad, or, in this case, shocked at Palmer's reveal, and I believe it's not only because MacReady talked about Gary, but also because we showed Gary's face and hid Palmer's face- two editing choices. Remember, my view on cinematography and editing is that they nearly always work in service of emphasizing ideas already present in the script. They can, but don't typically, create ideas on their own, without the script influencing them, but generally, they add to what is already there. The context of the story and characters can change how you interpret a shot. You can have one shot repeated over several different stories and you'd interpret that shot several different ways. That shot doesn't have an exact meaning independent of the story. For example, a low-angle shot often indicates power and so you may think that the cinematography alone is creating the idea that the subject of that shot is always powerful. However, that's not necessarily true. Sometimes, depending on the context of that shot (the characters, story, etc.), a low-angle shot may indicate isolation or confusion-ideas contradictory to power. What lets you know how you interpret that low-angle shot is the context of the scene or story as a whole, which is nearly always found in the script. While you can say that it's also reciprocated (multiple different shots could change how you interpret a single story), it's not as big if anyone effect. The interpretation of the story, at least in my opinion, is more rigid relative to the viewer (it doesn't change through the filmmaking as much) than the interpretation of the cinematography relative to the viewer (it changes much more when viewed through different stories). Editing and cinematography shouldn't contradict what the story or the characters have been presented as, but they can reinforce the ideas those concepts represent or have portrayed. That's one reason why you can have no knowledge on the processes and techniques of filmmaking itself but still be able to understand and interpret the story. You can remove the visuals and sound from the script but you can't remove the script from the visuals and sound. Think of the removal of the suspects as a countdown to a bomb that may go off before 00:00. It could go off even earlier. With each dismissal of a suspect, the clock counts down, but since we don't know when it will go off, we get increasingly nervous, even more than if we knew it would explode at 00:00, because if it had an explicit explosion time, we wouldn't have to worry until the end because it could only explode at 00:00. Basically, there's much more uncertainty to the blood test. Theoretically, it could go off after the second person or the seventh person. Though it could, it doesn't have to wait until the eight person, making it even more unpredictable and suspenseful because while it gives us some information, it leaves much of it hidden. Keep in mind, the wide shots within this specific section are only shown twice and they are both at the beginning of the scene. The shots establish the layout of the room-how MacReady is standing over them as they are all tied together-which is important because, after those shots, we exclusively only see close ups and medium close ups, and during this entire time, we see only one character in each shot, except for one exception. So, for about three minutes, Carpenter keeps you physically close to the characters and emphasizes the effects and feelings those shots create and reinforce by sticking almost exclusively to them. It's personal. It's relentlessly claustrophobic. Then, when Palmer is revealed to be a thing, he finally cuts back to a wide shot with the characters literally tied together to once again show how the characters are connected, trapped besides a powerful but now known and terrifying threat. It's similar to the wides shown at the beginning of the scene, but this time, we know who the threat is and we are no longer unsure but terrified.

    I think the one thing that is the giveaway with Palmer is how his attitude is a lot more bored, surly, and how in his shot we never see his eyes. All the others are looking Macready in the eyes because they want to try and establish some kind of connection with a guy who could burn them and signal they're human and to show some pity and mercy. Whereas Palmer, being a thing, sees no need and while not happy about being revealed, is actually looking forward to terrorising people as the Thing has a certain demon, gloating arrogance about it. It does not just want to assimilate everything it wants the people it assimilates to die terrified and in great pain. If there was a quick and merciful way it could take people out it would not do it.

    This movie has an interesting spot in my mind I cant think of for any other movie at this point my life that really speaks on how effective it is as a horror movie. I say this cause I don't get scared by unrealistic situations anymore, haven't been in a decade at least. Even when I am fearful it isn't that sort of "safe thrill" one wants, I only get feelings of sickness and dread that come from seeing real world dangers that are translated to film like nukes going off and wide spread disasters... un-fun things I don't wanna be reminded of when seeking entertainment. However when I was a kid and still believed in ghosts and the easter bunny, most horror movies were effective for me. However over the years all the movies I used to be scared of became boring and nothing new was enjoyable to begin with. Now I see these monsters and just think... meh. The only movie that scares me enough to the point I refuse to watch since I first saw it is "The Thing". I don't like the movie. but this is only cause it was so profoundly effective against 5 year old me that it is an irrational fear that endures to adult me today long after I had out grown so may others. The reason I don't watch it has nothing to do with being uninterested and has everything to doing with PTSD.

    If he was the Thing and they were tied up, it wouldn't have to take the test, just attack them. Was thinking how the scene could work but if he tricked them into being tied up, doing the test, having the blood defend itself and then it transforms, it just seems long winded. Was thinking more while typing, but, if it had taken the blood of someone not infected to trick them and the viewers that it was human, it could work. It would require that it had kept a blood bag before destroying the rest, maybe anticipating the blood test and needing to use sleight of hand. The coworkers then tie themselves up, thinking everything will be all right and then it transforms and attacks the humans, freeing all of them after, when they are all infected and building a spaceship to fly to populated regions. It would only take 3 days to infect the world, as is shown in the computer's prediction...

    He could've been. We never see him draw his blood or put it in the dish, so he could've dumped someone's blood into his own dish off-screen, his plan to make himself the only source of information as to what happened at the outpost when he's found. John Carpenter said one of MacReady and Childs at the end was a Thing, so if Childs was human, MacReady-Thing could've been counting on him getting lost in the blizzard and freezing to death. But then Childs used the fires in the camp to find his way back.

    Another aspect here is that I don't think the cast and crew ever quite decided whether possessed people actually knew they were the Thing. Various commentaries and documentaries have talked about how this was a running debate among them. IIRC, the decision was to just leave it ambiguous. Personally, I think it's more interesting - and more scary - if you assume the people are actually unaware they're the monster, that it's quietly "puppeteering" them, until it needs to take full direct control.

    8:31 One technical touch I appreciate: Carpenter introduces the fake stunt hand earlier in the scene here, in a way that doesn't draw attention to it. So when the audience sees the fake hand again just before the jumpscare, they're less likely to notice it. This makes it more surprising when the explosive blood effect happens. Otherwise, it looks just fake enough that its mere presence might tip off eagle-eyed viewers if it *only* appeared just before the big scare. (Which was a big problem with 80s gore effects in general.)

    One of the best elements of this scene even beyond all the amazing suspense and direction of it....is that it (along with the ending) really questions what The Thing is. Palmer is sus...but in a very human way. Much of what The Thing does throughout the film can easily be read as either an accident or a desperate attempt to survive, and as alien and unknowable as Maccready believes The Thing to be, the film doesn't fully justify that thought. The Thing is harmful and violent and a monster because the humans are harmful and violent and monsters. It is a reflection of humanity, and not in a good way. And that question that is at the heart of the film is "if they had shown the better parts of humanity, would The Thing have reflected those instead?" It's specifically not answered, but there are enough crumbs of that idea littered through the film to leave you wondering.

    One more thing (pun unintended) about this scene to reveal who is a suspect and who was a Thing is the cinematographer's admission of not seeing the light in Palmer's eyes. When the scene begins, you see a glint in his eye like everyone else, but as the scene goes on until he's outed the light diminishes entirely.

    It's stuff like that that makes me say that The Thing is the closest that Hollywood has ever come to putting Lovecraft on the big screen. There's lots of other Lovecraft-inspired stuff and even more gory horrors than the Things, but it's the paranoia, tension, and gradually escalating madness that sells the Lovecraft atmosphere, every bit as much as the Things themselves. (If you want a different take on this story, look up Glorious, which has nearly as much paranoia and claustrophobia with a cast down to two: One poor unfortunate soul, and one Ghatanothoa, a Great Old One trying to prevent the return of Cthulhu. A Thing that can actually converse with you, which manages to be pretty creepy in its own right).

  • @felinusfeline5559
    @felinusfeline5559 Жыл бұрын

    Another point to add to this amazing video. Carpenter said he intentionally kept details of how the thing worked vague to increase the audiences paranoia. Such as if those who are assimilated are "dead" and just a thing pretending or if they are totally unaware until the thing reveals itself. With Palmer, his weirdly calm nature could be attributed to him being a stoner. If you have done it or know someone who does, you may have noticed that even after their high is gone, many stoners will be calmer and non-plussed for a day or so afterward.

    Imo, the person wouldn't be aware of it, on a conscious level, but would be aware of it subconsciously, because the subconscious IS where the Thing hides. The victims are basically still alive, but guided by an unseen hand. People question this notion by saying the victims are dead, but the Thing imitates completely, to the point where behaves like you, even to it's own detriment. It's not a body snatcher, bereft of emotion; it takes you over to the point where there's no noticable difference, so how would the person imitated know they were an imitation if they themselves can't tell? They wouldn't, BUT - they would experience doubt about themselves, but rationalize that doubt to the paranoid atmosphere the Thing creates. For example, Norris is offered command; he declines, due to the stress of the situation, which could affect his weak heart. But, Norris's subconscious awareness ( which is the Thing) also pushes him to not accept command, and to stay in the background. Blair, who was the first person taken over, exhibits behavior that works on multiple levels. His going crazy looks noble, but actually makes no sense the more you think about it. He was a respected scientist: all he had to do was call a meeting and explain his findings, but instead he went completely ballistic. On a personal level, it proves that Thing's might not necessarily know they are Thing's, because Blair's paranoia most likely includes the notion that he knew he could possibly be the Thing, which causes him to go nuts! He knows what the creature is capable of, has handled infected material, has been alone for long periods of time - all factors that could have led to his potential imitation! Another notion to think about: since the Thing's are all individuals, it could also be possible that some would know they are Thing's, some would suspect themselves but not be sure, and some would be completely oblivious. Also, the Thing targeted scientists specifically ( Blair, Norris, Fuchs) to imitate, at least until it was outed. It imitated Palmer because he was a pilot( which was thwarted by Blair destroying the helicopter).

    Just gonna chuck this in the mix. The whole point of this blood test scene is that they know who's what based on the labels on the blood samples. You know MacReady's not one because his blood doesn't react. The poster on the wall behind Mac this whole time literally says "They aren't labeled, chum". Random? That why changing your guess of one out of three doors after one of the ones you didn't pick is opened actually raises the odds significantly. The original pick had a 1/3 chance, once you change your guess, it's a 1/2. It's not a 1/2 on the original pick once an unselected door is opened, that's just human instinct being wrong.
