In recent decades we have come to understand that metaphors are not merely a means of prettifying language but a way of conceiving and thinking. By way of metaphor we can elucidate the meaning of a thing and throw new light on how to conceive it. Metaphors bring together two different realms, so that in order to understand and interpret any literary use of metaphor, we are obliged to delve into the analysis of both realms-the source domain in which the words conveying the metaphor have a literal meaning and the target domain in which the words conveying the metaphor have a figurative meaning. In the course of the lecture, examples of different types of metaphors taken from Biblical literature are .presented and a method of interpreting them is suggested
בעשורים האחרונים גברה התפיסה שמטאפורה איננה סתם קישוט לשוני, אלא דרך תפיסה ומחשבה. בעזרת מטאפורה ניתן להבהיר את המשמעות של הדבר ואף לשפוך אור חדש על תפיסתו. המטאפורה מפגישה בין שני תחומים, ולפיכך על מנת להבין ולפרש כל שימוש ספרותי הנעשה בה, מן הראוי להעמיק בניתוח של שני התחומים: המקורי, שבו נושאות המילים המעבירות את המטאפורה משמעות מילולית ותחום היעד שבו נושאות המילים משמעות ציורית.
