The Theme Park History of The Great Movie Ride (Disney's Hollywood Studios)

Ойын-сауық

The Great Movie Ride was a dark ride that opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on May 1st, 1989. A spectacular journey into the movies, the attraction featured Audio-Animatronic figures, practical sets, live actors, special effects, and projections to recreate iconic scenes from twelve classic films throughout motion picture history.

I was on the opening crew of this ride. We worked for months with the ride before it opened. The script went through MANY changes, right up to opening day. And some scenes changed entirely. For instance, Mickey's FANTASIA scene was originally a tornado for the WIZARD OF OZ segment. But Disney could not get the segment short enough to satisfy copyright permissions. The scene, however, could only go so fast, and eventually the tornado (which never really worked as intended) had to be cut entirely. I was on set the day Cagney's wife and daughters came by to approve his scene. And ALIENS originally had strobe effects and was darker, but got tamed a bit after a test rider was triggered with an epileptic seizure. A shame, as that scene was originally quite intense. And for those curious, I only ever saw the FOOTLIGHT PARADE scene working as intended maybe once or twice. But the rotating tiers and (especially) bubbles effect was great when it did.

It's amazing how much of this ride depended on the cast members--I can't believe ride operators had to memorize a 60-page script and then deliver it with high-quality acting....on top of keeping track of the ride vehicle, timing, and scene changes! I really hope they got paid well because they certainly deserved it.

The main thing that annoys me about Great Movie Ride's closure is that Hollywood Studios needs a ride like this. Anytime you go to Hollywood Studios now, 5-6 rides have an hour or longer wait (and there are only 9 rides in the park!). The park is busy pretty much all day, every day. The Great Movie Ride can hold a lot of guests and because it's a longer attraction, it keeps people off other lines for a longer period of time. I understand it was in need of an update (in all honesty, Disney owns so much IP now they could have revamped the attraction to only feature their movies) and I fully believe that it needed one. However, Hollywood Studios is a small park and cannot currently comfortably accommodate the amount of guests that come everyday. The park needs more rides, not more ride replacements. I'm also not thrilled that my nearly half hour, air-conditioned break has been replaced with a ride that lasts 5 minutes tops.

My favorite ride of the park. It’s sad that it’s gone now and replaced with a new attraction. Even though I’m glad Mickey Mouse finally has his own attraction after so many years. I personally think the money they put in the new ride to fully refurbish and update The Great Movie Ride to feature other genres and newer movies. That way it’ll stay relevant and the updated AAs will keep it going. But, much like Universal, Disney is now banking on trends than nostalgia. Though, you’d should’ve mentioned more on the grand finale movie montage. That montage has made at least five changes before the TCM version. Other movies were added in some of the parts along the years. The montage was the best part of it. Wish there’s a way to watch them all.

Fun Fact: the hijacking scenes are known as scene A and scene B. Scene A (gangster scene) would always be featured in the ride day-to-day, but scene B (western scene) only operated on busier days when park capacity was higher. This allowed GMR to move larger crowds through the attraction quicker so as to make the queue line not feel longer. You could tell that both scenes were running, as well as tell which scene you'd be seeing, based on if there were two ride vehicles and which one you were sat in. The first vehicle would roll through the gangster scene with no interruption or show sequence, not stopping until the western. So the scenes were happening simultaneously for the guests. If you wanted to see the western scene but were going to be placed into the second vehicle, you were allowed to ask cast members if you could go for Scene B. They would ask you to stand off to the side while they loaded the current vehicles. Typically this would mean you getting a front row seat and sitting next to the vehicle operator / being close to the Host and then to Mugsy / Bank Robber respectively. It was a really cool experience!

Close but flipped. Western was the A show and Gangster was the B show. The letter names came from the designations of the guide wires in the floor. There are four radio wires. A takes the western show and parks on the left in the finale theater. B is the gangster show and takes the right side spot in finale. C leads vehicles into the storage track of the maintenance bay. D leads into the repair area of the maintence bay.

This was a trip, memories flooding back! I worked the ride in the early 90’s, such a great experience (I can still remember half the script). I was really disappointed with the shift in the park from ‘making-of’ to just IP. I loved the behind the scenes production aspect of the early years, it made the park feel really special. Thank you for this really thorough overview.

so interesting little crossover story, I worked at tgmr in the early oughts and the cast would routinely go to universal city walk's city jazz club (now the karaoke club) for their swing dancing nights, a lot of us even dressed in period clothing (fedoras, zoot suits, flapper dresses and hats). so at least for a few months there was a legit chance to run into the gangster who hijacked your tour group at Disney while they were having drinks and dancing at universal 😂

So the fascinating thing is that, theoretically, they could’ve totally gutted the building before replacing it with Runaway Railway. But there’s several parts that really make me think they’ve left parts, or repurposed and moved them, or maybe just use them because they already knew how from GMR. Like the gangster car to me could believably be the same place where Mickey and Minnie’s car is at the beginning of the ride. And the barn with the haystacks in the top window looks a lot like the one from the end of the ride. I want to look at the building layouts now and see if the spots overlap or if it’s just homage or coincidence The irony is not lost on me that Runaway Railway got the tornado they do badly wanted lmao

We always go to Disney World with my grandparents… My grandpa rides just about everything with us but my grandma has strain issues and can’t ride anything fast, but doesn’t particularly care for some of the dark rides like Haunted Mansion… Sure we could ride Pirates or sit in the Tiki Room, but… TGMR was the one ride we ALWAYS went on together, every single time… And Runaway Railway’s fun and all, but… it moves too fast/erratic for her. And now there’s next to no rides to go on with my grandma….

When the was rethemed it KILLED ME. I hate the new ride and refuse to even ride it. I’ve been going for 30 some odd years at this point. I can’t stand some of the changes not all change is good. This one on the other hand could have just used a trade out in films every few years. That way we could still have The Great Movie Ride and gave Mickey his own ride somewhere else. Just like Catastrophe Canyon Back Lot Tour is where the Runaway Railroad was originally supposed to go and a lot of Imagineers were actually against it being changed. Just like a lot of things you don’t need to change it to appeal to younger audiences just simply redo the inside to a different film or whatnot and nothing is wrong with a newer updated system. Just the current state of Disney and current President and CEO I haven’t been back in 3 years and no longer wish to go back really. They keep screwing with things that don’t need to be screwed with and until peace and order is restored I refuse to return.

Thank you for this. It’s a true shame that such a fun, educational attraction is no longer around. I wish they would’ve kept it and changed it to ‘The Disney Movie Ride” or something and just dedicated it to Disney’s solid list of films. Oh well. Sad, but glad I got to experience it a lot over the years. Great video.
